Permanent Rep?

Well, I've only been back on VMKF since... like, a week before mother's day or so... so I assumed that the rep was for the holiday...

But I've noticed...... holidays are long over/still gotta wait a while for another one...

So...
...... rep's permanent now? cuz before I left, it only came out for the holidays

Back in 2005 when the site first started, I believe it was left on. You'd get people begging for rep from people, and also giving out negative rep for no reason.

Not sure if you know, but right now you can only give positive rep, whereas you can also set it to give negative. If you give negative rep, this means you can deduct points from other users if they make an unworthy post. People couldn't be trusted with that and took it for granted, thinking the mods wouldn't do anything about it.

Indeed, they only turned it on at holidays, but now due to the site being much smaller, it's continuously left on. (woot!!)

so......couldn't they just leave it on in the first place anyway without the power to give negative rep?-- well.. people begging for rep isn't really solved anyway though.

It was also considered a popularity contest when rep was left on all year. Members didn't think that if you had a large amount of rep that you were helpful like it was intended, they thought it meant you were more popular. So friends would give each other rep for no real reason just to get more rep. If you had a lot of rep your were respected, and if you didn't you...well didn't matter in the eyes of a large percentage of the community. There were several more factors that went into the decision when rep was taken away for most of the year, but basically we (the vmkf community) couldn't handle the responsibility of rep. Although, since then vmkf has matured some and has thought of rep as its original purpose once again. Let's keep it that way.
