I take it you are using the Quick Reply at the bottom of each thread rather than going into the normal window. To get the fonts tab as well as the rest, click "Post Reply" (just above where it says Quick Reply) rather than simply typing. This way you have the full selection of choices - just like you do when starting a new thread.
