chapter 1:
beginning to look back

"And protesters still fight for VMK toda--" Clever switched off the television. I looked at him. "Still upset about this?" I asked. He nodded furiously.
"At least we're still here, you rememeber. We got to stay." I reasoned. Clever came to my house a lot; as best friends, it was a normal thing. Of course, Clever never liked the idea of VMK closing, because only some of the VMK players were chosen to stay after May 21, 2008. Not the people who played on the outside of the screen, where you (reading the story) are, but us, the people you would guide around with a green circle in VMK. We were two of those avatars. But we didn't have our "Guiders" as we would call those people who "guided" us around. Some of Clever's old friends weren't any of those "Stayers".
"Well we best be going, Corks, if we're meeting Rose (Pretty_Puppy) and Ace." Clever reminded me. I nodded and put the magazine I was reading down on the coffee table. We were meeting Rose and Ace at the Blue Crocidile. Oh, you didn't know? Yes, after VMK closed its gates, the name of the Blue Bayou was changed to the Blue Crocidile. No, I'm not a fan of the name either.
When we spotted Rose and Ace at the Blue Crocidile, (Let's just call it the B.C., okay?) we waved and they noticed us. They waved back. We walked over. "Hey guys! Thanks for saving us seats."
"No problem-o," Ace grinned.
Clever sat down next to Rose.
"Clever's still upset about this whole thing-a-ma-bobber about VMK closing, I see." Rose observed.
I nodded. There was no way you could avoid Clever's upside-down smile.
"Just be glad YOU and your other friends, us, got to stay." Ace reasoned, waving down Crockie, the "Gator Waitor".
"How can I help you?" Crockie asked.
"I feel like...fish." Rose grinned. "With rosemary! Yummeroo!"
"Fish...with...rosemary...Okay! How about the rest of you?" Crockie finished writing down Rose's order on his pad of paper.
"I think it's an olive day," Ace began, "ooh, I know! Olive-filled-chicken! Yum!"
Clever made a "I'm gonna gag" face at me. I giggled. We hate olives.
"Olive...fil...chicken..." He grinned after writing it down. "How 'bout something for this upset face?" He asked, pointing to, you guessed it, Clever.
"Uhm...Can I get some mooshed-ham soup?" Clever asked.
Crockie nodded and wrote it down. "Ms. Corks?"
"I think I'll have the Extra-Cheese-Please-Pizza! Your speciality!" I piped up.
"Alright! I'll be back in a few minutes." Crockie left.
Even during the meal, that frown never left Clever's face...How was I going to make him feel better?
