The Nightmare Before Christmas and Star Wars (and Superman Returns, though that's a new film and may have been shot differently) are not computer-generated films. So how are the foreground elements isolated and moved when there's no background image behind them?

Here's some information, more is being gathered right now.

Video content can be converted into 3D video with a Philips semi-automated 2D to-3D conversion tool. Media companies can revive their 2D content by creating 3D versions using the Philips conversion tools in post-production. Building on the Philips image processing tradition, an artistic element in the production of 3D content from 2D can be added. The tooling is designed to fi t into the regular workfl ow of media and post production facilities.

Ok, so after a little more reading, that Phillips Semi-Automated conversion tool analyzes the motion of objects and then by comparing the varying pixels is able to seperate the images, and create depth. From there it creates a three dimensional map.
Also, apparently, this tool is going to be real big when it comes to creating 3d images without glasses.
