Is rep truly necessary? Shouldn't we work as one without motivation to do so?

No, it's not necessary. We leave it shut off most of the time since it isn't and often it is abused by some members of the forums. We do turn it on for special holidays for those that enjoy it. If you don't like it, you can always disable it in your edit options section of the userCP.
