Costume Editing
So you want to do some costume editing? Huh?
You will need-
Software
You will need some sort of 'Paint' software whether it's 'Paintshop Pro' or even 'Paint' you will be able to edit costumes with all of them.
Paint- Will take alot more time, and sorry to say, your edits might not turn out as good as some used by professional paint software.
Example- 25565 (Five minute paint drawing)
Paintshop Pro- You can get much more professional results on here, there are many more tools to use and you can put a professional finish on it.
Example- 25566 (From a larger edit, probably the head would have taken 5 minutes)
A Template.
You will need a VMK character wearing some normal VMK clothes, now don't go finding some edits to re-edit, take a picture on VMK using VMK Pal or my personal favorite way, take a visit to 'BnyKty's Character Thread' (http://www.vmkforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=86223).
Imagination
Now the hard part, you will need some imagination, you could have a theme of something like disney characters, mythical/mystical creatures or pop stars, or even certian clothing such as dresses or something. You could also search on google for interesting outfits.
Knowledge
You will also need knowledge of how to use your paint program. For example where the 'Push' Button is on your toolbar.
Paint is pretty easy so i'll let you work that out for yourself....
On Paintshop (Painshop Pro 6 to be specific)
The 'Push' Tool is found in the 'Retouch' button 25567, once you have clicked it, right click on it again and then click on the 'Cogs'.
25568
There is a scroll down list with most of the most useful tools on it... Here are some of them and what they are used for...
To lengthen stuff, hair, dresses, tops, skin color, you can use the 'Push' tool in 'Retouch'- Click and drag to use it.
To lighten and darken the 'Lighten RGB' and 'Darken RGB' tools in 'Retouch' again are useful, they add depth and shadow to the artwork, but they do look a little fake if you dont smooth it all down, which is why i use the 'Soften' tool, again in the 'retouch' option.
For normal drawing i use the paint brush and the air brush tool.
(All these tools will vary in different software, if you are struggling, use the help button at the top of the paint screen and search for the tools.)
Shading
To Shade you will need to use the 'Lighten RGB' and 'Darken RGB' tools in 'Retouch'.
To know where to shade if you can't work it out naturally, you need to imagine where the sun is... For example... (A quick science lesson >_<)
http://img162.**************/img162/741/sunahf6.jpg
The sun cannot reach behind something, so once you have sorted out where you want to put your imaginary sun, work out where the light would reach. As for shadows just place a teddy or something infront of a light and that should help. ;)
25569
^^^^ Although it takes some time i think it is worth it to shade, i mean look at this quick edit i made concentrate on the dress most of all, it is unshaded, doesn't it look a bit odd?
http://img408.**************/img408/3108/editkc3.jpg
^^^^ This is the places that most need shaded ;) (This is not using the darken and lighten tool, this is using black and white paint, to show where to shade, the actual darken and lighten tools are ALOT lighter.)
25570
^^^^Now look at the difference now it is shaded (and softened near the edges, it is better to soften after shading to make the dark and light blend with the original colour), and this was just some 3 minute shading, imagine what could be done if longer was spend on it!!
Outlines
Its best to have either a very light outline round clothing, or a dark one which is blended by the soften tool.
Hair
Now for hair, try not to use the same colour whatever software you're using, use different shades, use the eyedropper if you're using paint and use the push tool to do all the hair if you're using any professional software.
Make Up
When you're putting make up on your edits, remember to go light on it, less is more in this case, it really doesnt look too good to have the eyes black rimmed and lips bright red (unless that's what you're aiming for...), I think the 'Colour to target' tool (in retouch) is useful as it makes the colour slightly opaque, which is useful for a slight coating of colour on the eyes, lips or cheeks :)
Clothing
To do clothing, the paint-brush, clone-brush, air-brush, push tool and colour to target tools are all very useful. :)
I really hope this helps anyone who is confused or needs help with costume creating, at the moment im off school so i have alot of spare time. Although right now i cannot remember anything else to say, i will probably update this later though. ;)
For anyone who wants to see how i used my own advice to create costumes... Here is my costume thread. (http://www.vmkforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=94973)
