Alligatorz - Postponed

Recently, Microsoft Picture It! Express 9, my main picture editor for Alligatorz has stopped working. Every time I try to open a picture it stops responding, even after reinstalling and restarting.

Microsoft refuses to help because there is a newer version of Microsoft editing software, Digital Suite (expensive). Basically, Microsoft didn't give a care.

So, sadly, until I fix this myself, I can not make new comics. The comic will be back once I get this fixed. Sorry everyone :(

Before I had posted that my software to create these comics had quit working. Well, after having a strange encounter with Windows Vista, I've been forced to format my hard drive, which clears every byte of data on it. After reinstalling MSN, which Microsoft Picture It! Express 9 comes with, the program has been returned to normal state.

I still have to get my computer working with everything else, so don't expect the episode right way. You can easily expect the next episode to be out in about 25 days, but probably less.

OOH! YAY! I can't WAIT! :D

I'll start working on the next episode tonight. Sorry about the length of Episode 4, but I don't want to make the episodes like Episode 1 where they take up a megabyte of file size. But don't worry, this one should have at least one new background.

Spongebob was exactly what I was thinking of when I made that frame. I had actually watched an episode in the morning that day, and I wanted to try something like that.

To make the volcano shake, I just blurred the image and played the two images back and forth.

I have spent the past week fooling around with programs and Alligatorz to create a new style. Even though nobody has said anything about the old text boxes, we all know they were utterly boring. Since you are forced to look at these text boxes that take up almost the whole screen of the comic, why should it be a solid color? Why should you have to look at a solid color instead of the background? I have found a solution to this. Semi-transparent text boxes of the color of the alligator it is pointing to. Now you can enjoy reading the text and look at the background. You can also tell which alligator is talking easier now.

Also, another major improvement is that the terrible white background has been removed the the alligators. Believe me, this was hard because I have to save my sprites in GIF format.

Although GIF format allows for animation, it is extremely low quality. Notice that some parts of the pictures look granulated. GIF only allows for 256 pre-specified colors to be in an image. I have spent the past week tweaking with ways to improve my images. I have found a way to get the most quality I can out of the images. Even though it is not that much, it is still an improvement.

If my comics were not animated, but rather just panels, I could save the comic in PNG and have lossless images. But that's no fun. I will continue to do my comics in GIF so I can animate them. When Firefox 3 comes out, there will be a new animated image format called APNG. The only problem is that APNG can only be viewed in Firefox 3, and there will probably not be an addition to GIMP to create the images, nor will there be a program to animate them with. This is very sad because APNG provides PNG quality and animation.

I will be redoing every episode, one by one, frame by frame, to adjust to the new revisions. I may take a break after a few recreated episodes and make a new episode. I will be fixing the grammar, adding extra frames, and overall tuning up the comic.

Also, I would proudly like to announce, Microsoft Paint will no longer be used to create this comic!

Normally, the changes being made would be quite simple for anyone with basic knowledge of a program such as GIMP, but the GIF format is the challenge. GIF is the only image format that supports animation and is supported by all web browsers. However, this format is so old that it was created before computers could even display more than 256 colors. If you save any image in GIF format in any program besides GIMP or PhotoShop, the result is pretty ugly. But even when I save the frames in GIMP, it still distorts the quality.

My hope is to eventually switch to APNG, which as stated above, provides all the quality of PNG, and animation. For every frame in my episodes, I will also be saving a high quality PNG version, which can be converted to APNG when the proper plug-ins become available.

Once resources become available, I will make a high quality APNG version for Firefox 3 users, and a lower quality GIF version for IE users. Hopefully, I can get some people to switch to Firefox. But when evil Microsoft decides to add a patch for APNG, all new episodes at that time will only be featured in APNG.

Nice job. I don't exactly care about how the GIF format messes my stuff up. After all, it's meant to pixel-ly, for nalstalgic reasons. But I hate the white mess-ups when saving!

Sorry about the lack of updates. I've been working with Alligatorz stuff, however. I may post what I've worked on later, but I'll have to ask a mod because it links off-site.

I've also been sketching out on paper what Episode 9 will look like. I've got some pretty cool ideas. I'll have to post my drawings sometime. Sometime meaning: when I get a scanner. It's either going to be a really long episode, or a really short one. It will be done before or after Episode 3 is redone.

I made a new sig for me. Yup, it confuses you so much, not only with its vertiginous animation, but also with its ability to make you so curious, you just have to click it. Sounds like the perfect plan, huh? Yeah.

Nothing will be accomplished by me in the next week. I will be playing Pokemon Diamond Version, so don't even hope for a new episode. For anyone who has plans to get the game, good for you. PM me a week later, I'll have the guide book. I should be getting sleep right now before tomorrow, but I had a strange desire to post a very long post. Well, medium-large.

Still no updates. I've had a lot of tests this last week that I had to study for, and with any extra time, I've been playing Pokemon Diamond Version.

A VMKaracter with the Gatorz...

Well, sorry for not updating in over a month. I have some big news about the comic in the following post.

Forever, the GIF format has dragged my comic back in graphical style. It's the only widely used format that can support animation, but has a very, very small color range. I've recently found a program that can convert PNG to GIF with near lossless quality that beats GIMP by a long shot.

I will be making new episodes very soon. I will release more information in the next day or so.
