flag sitting
ah, flag sitting in pirates of the caribbean capture the flag.
such big evil in such little words.

lets look at flag sitting through two views.

Flag sitting IS NOT cheating - Flag sitting is a strategy of guarding. Your supposed to defend your flag, and the best way to defend the flag is sitting on it so the other team will not get it. That way, when my team member comes back with the flag, we win.

Flag sitting IS cheating - ummm... HELLO! its called CAPTURE the flag, not SIT ON the flag. Flag sitting is sheer laziness in a player, and/or they can not play pirates that well and are only helpful sitting on a flag. yeah, you can blow up the person. but usually flag getters are black pearls who only have small amounts of ammo. by the time i get the flag sitter off the flag, and use all my ammo to do it, the other team is coming back with their flag! how am i supposed to blow them up with my nonexistant ammo, huh? i mean, they should at least TRY to blow me up. you get more credits, durr. unless my team cheats too, us people who play fairly have a small chance of winning.

so, what do you think flag sitting is, and why?

I think it is a bit annoying, but there is always ways around it, im not making any choices in that department because i have flag sat once or twice. So... i chose the llama one, it seemed most appropriate..

I agree with Jeena. Sometimes when they do sit on their flag I usually do the same thing <g> and they get mad :D then they start moving. And that's why me dearie Be I don't play a lot of flag games lol

yup, if somebody else flag sits, i flag sit. makes the playing field more even. i think flag sitting when the other team flag sits is not cheating.

naww, i can only play flag. in battle, i usually get less than 200 credits or nothing at all :(

I don't think flag sitting is cheating, as I have done it in the past, and sometimes do now. If the other team flag sits, I think: "WOW, Easy Target!". Shoot them off the flag, it only takes one lot of cannons, and they usually move before you do anyway.
If I flag sit: I sit on the flag to scare them, then move away to shoot them. If they get it, I chase them ;)

I and all my friends I play with will say its totally cheating. Yes they are easy targets, but if that is the only way they can defend their flag, THEY STINK! We just go over to their side and blow them out of the water, but that is not to object of flag and really ircks me when they do this as I am a person who loves to play flag. If I wanted to play battle, then I would play battle!

Oh lol and btw I usually now only play flag with my friends since the flag sitting gets on my nerves so badly.

If flag sitting were cheating, then all ships in flag should default to the Black Pearl. What's the use of the others? Would it be any better if they sat 4-5 spots off the flag and sat waiting for you? I say not.

I accidently put no. I was thinking It meant no, I dont flag sit in pirates.

And yes, it is cheating. I mean really. It's not fair. Like behave said. Its CAPTURE the flag. Not SIT on the flag. People who sit on the flag are just people who aren't good at the game, and think that by sitting on the flag, they're cool.

But I have found a simple solution to this delema. Ship Battle ;)

Flag sitting is not cheating its just bad sportsmanship. The premise of that game is to get the flag and move it to your base. Any thing that impedes the other team is fair game but it lowers the point scores and ruins the fun. Its not cheating but it sure is annoying. When you find a player doing that and you just can't tollerate it, leave the game and let them sit alone. My team does that and its an effective deterant in future games. :-)

They can sit on it if they want. If your a good capturer, you should be able to get it out anyways. I mean I play against tons of people who just sit on the flag, and most of the time, I find a way to get their flag and bring it back to my base. There will always be this confilict with a capture the flag game. If your "Puppy guarding." Even in real life people argue that, about real life capture the flag games. So I think this is pretty much unavoidable. I personally, don't see something wrong with it, because it's pretty much an auto way for me to get the flag. Although, When, I do guard, I don't use this method.

I think the real problem, is when you tell them to let you change yer ship, you join, and they don't.

OMG LOOK A LLAMA!!!! LOL Sorry now that I got that out of my system, I think it is cheating...first off, at schools, (at least mine) when we play games like this, there are certain rules about how close you can be to stuff. So yeah, I take it as cheating.....

I agree with some of what you are saying. Flag sitting is not cheating, and, like you say, anything that impedes the other team is fair game. I personally don't use it as a strategy because I think it's boring and basically you're a sitting duck waiting to be shot by a skilled flag-getter. However, I disagree with your comment that it's bad sportsmanship. What is bad sportsmanship is leaving a game just because you don't like what the other team is doing, especially when you say yourself it's fair game.

I don't flag sit, but I don't think its cheating. It's a method of defense and I always choose the Wicked Wench so I have bunches of ammo to blow the sitters away so I don't really care too much, one way or the other. I don't think it's exactly cheating.

I don't think its cheating, yet I do think its cheating.

I think its cheating...
if you sit on the flag, and wait for the Kraken to get ya, then you don't blow up, making the flag "ungettable."

I don't think it's cheating....
because you can still shoot the person down in order to get the flag when they are not on it.

Flag sitting makes them an easy shot.

I just don't like being called a cheat for shooting at a flag sitter bc they did not fire back... hmm

It is not cheating just a way some ppl play the game.

There is no way to cheat in pirates, according to VMK. So you are able to sit on the flag for a reason.

I believe it is cheating. Why should someone get to just sit on the flag just to be able to win? Can't some people control their greed? I mean, what's the point in saying 'gl' and 'gg' if you are just going to try to make the other team lose by any means? Sigh.

What's the point of entering a Capture The Flag game if you are just going to keep people from trying to actually play Capture the Flag?!

If you are able to sit on the flag, then I'm sure it's fine.
Also, it's fun to have the opponent do something as foolish.

I voted no it isn't. Pirates is an open game there aren't any written rules. You can't be banned from flag sitting, if it wasn't allowed vmk wouldn't make it possible.

Im not saying everyone should do it, im just saying that if someone does it, you shouldn't get upset over them "cheating".

Not to mention, they would be a much easier target if they flag sit.

it does seem though that the results are a little innacurate-- we should wait a bit more before judging

I have never sat on the flag. Its bad form to sit on the flag. I mean seriously if that is the only way to win, then you must really be bad at pirates. If you cant play flag then go play battle.

Adventuredaz
12-29-2006, 07:03 AM
I am another non flag sitting player that is annoyed by it much as people hiding up in the score in batttle...would you look at that a llamma... It is clearly not cheating as schmoofy points out you can't cheat in pirates. Further its pirates, they really have no rules.

I prefer battle, and when I play flag I often make the goal sink the other team instead of get the flag. one could consider that cheating as well I guess I mean i stop the other team from getting the flag and failed at the main objective of collecting the flag.

Anyway if it was against the rules VMK could have made a 10 second rule like in Haunted Mansion - if you don't move in 10 seconds you will be booted, ah but wait then nobody wins hmm. I take it back you can cheat in pirates by quiting before the end of the game...now thats anoying.

Neoteny
12-29-2006, 07:07 AM
If you don't move, the Kraken will get you.

Or the opponents' ships will.

Sitting on the flag doesn't get you anywhere. The object is to capture the other flag. If all you do is get yourself blown up, you don't win.

Exoxus
12-29-2006, 01:06 PM

I haven't. Just because someone else does, doesn't make it right at all.

i am guilty of flag sitting it is the best defense of the flag
Yeah, I will agree, it is the best way to win, but that doesn't mean it's right. It's called Capture the Flag, not Sit on the Flag. It's all right to circle the flag in a defencive manner, but sitting on it so nobody can reach the flag?

That's just wrong.

If you don't move, the Kraken will get you.

Or the opponents' ships will.

Sitting on the flag doesn't get you anywhere. The object is to capture the other flag. If all you do is get yourself blown up, you don't win.

Well, what if your opponent get destroyed, then their shipwreck is left over the flag? How fair is that?

By then, the other team has most likely already won. At least, that's what happens to me every game.

This games is capture the flag. Even if it is a virtual game, the guard ( or guards) should at least not be on top of it. Im usually offence, and even though i can sometimes get around it, it's sometimes really annoying and ruins my chance of getting any credits at all.

In my opinion, I don't think it is cheating.

Many of you argue that it is 'capture' the flag not 'sit on' the flag. However, part of the strategy is to not let the other team get your flag. Whenever I play with friends, I am usually the Flag Getter, and they are the guards. By your sense, staying near your flag also be cheating? Right? Because you are not 'capturing' your flag?

The point of Capture the Flag is to win. Plain and simple.

When they sit on the flag, I always find easy access to the flag by bumping against their stern or bow. They can't hit me and I get the flag

Neoteny

I usually play defense. I don't sit on the flag (though I don't consider it cheating when others do). I find it better to wait beside the flag, so I can shoot anyone who tries to grab it.

have any of you claiming its cheating, actually played capture the flag in real life, or even flashlight tag at night? If a player is on the flag defending it, shoot him, one less player. In real life, you tag as many of the defenders to elimate them to make getting the flag easier.

Cinnamon Minuet
01-02-2007, 11:12 AM
I believe it's both, because alot of the time, you can't actually sit all the way on the flag. I know! 'The Concept'
But if you get used to it, you just don't see the problem anymore. I played flag because it had more credits, and my friends played it.
Now I play it because I love blowing up flag sitters.

PS: I always go, because I couldn't guard a flag for my life.

I think it's a little bit of cheating and not, I personally don't to it but you can easily get around them if you just shoot..I mean if people are going to be like that I am sure they'll learn their lesson once they keep on losing....
