Yavn Speaks!

12/18 – Tired of waiting in line for Guest rooms or Host games? We've got some news for you! The latest VMK game news live and direct from VMK's very own Yavn.

Holidays – Again!

Well we've got about a week left in the holiday season and I'm almost out of things to talk to about – so let's start this week by recapping what's going on around our Kingdom… The Holiday Quest are running now until January 1st at Disneyland and the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World. You also have just a few more days to finish the Santa Clause Quest and win that Cookie Tree. This week in the game you can score that Santa Chair and other Holiday Chairs, so get in there and grab a seat, so to speak.

Take a seat on Santa's Sleigh.

As you look ahead to the New Year, you're probably saying 'OK, Yavn what's next?' Well, we've got lots of exciting surprises in store for you in the New Year, new lands, new features and more cool new stuff. Over the next few weeks I'll be talking about some of these new things we'll be rolling out in early January. Stay tuned, as long as you're reading the Newsletter you'll know exactly how these new things work and when they'll be going into the game.

VMK Pass

This week I'm very pleased to announce, drumroll please… VMK Pass! What's VMK Pass? Glad you asked, simply put, VMK Pass allows you to be in 2 places at one time. Basically, while you are in line to enter a Guest room, you can be off somewhere else in the game instead of waiting in line! So the next time you're debating about entering a Guest or Host room, get a VMK Pass!

http://avmk.disney.go.com/avmk_v0300/en_US/media/calendar/YavnSpks-2006-12-18-VMKPass.gif

Behold! The VMK Pass!

Here's how it works: You're in line to enter a Guest room, click on the Guest room you wish to enter and one of three things will happen:

– If the room is not full - you'll enter the room immediately.

– If the room is full, but you are within 5 people from entering the room – you will be placed in queue and enter the Guest room when it's your turn.(This is the way the game currently works.)

– If the room has more than 5 people ahead of you waiting to get in - you will be asked if you want to get a VMK Pass to enter the room. Once you get your VMK Pass you can now go to any other Guest or public spaces in VMK. (PLEASE NOTE: You cannot play any mini games such as Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion or the Tomorrowland Arcade while you have a VMK Pass.) Finally when you are within 5 players from entering the Guest room you have a VMK Pass for, a window will appear on screen notifying you and give you the option to join the line. You have 20 seconds to decide to join the line, once you decide you want to get back in line, click the option and you'll be placed in the queue – otherwise you will be removed from the line.

Here's a few other things that will help you maximize your VMK Pass experience:

1. The line queue system is changing slightly and the Mickey Heads are being replaced with actually numbers. You need to remember that when you click on the Guest Room menu the number shows how many people are in the room at that exact moment. The menu does not update until you click on it again or open another tab.

2. Lines (or queues) no longer have limits on how many people are ahead of you in line, so be aware that you may be behind many people.

3. You can only have 1 VMK Pass at any given time. If you would get into another line, the current VMK Pass you're holding will be replaced for the new Guest room you're wanting to enter.

4. Entering any mini-games (Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, Jungle Cruise, Fireworks, Tomorrowland Arcade) will void and cancel your VMK Pass.

5. Having a VMK Pass won't make the line move any faster. What it does do is allow you make better use of your time while waiting.

New Years Celebration!

Finally, don't forget to join us for New Year's Eve and help us celebrate 2007, VMK style! The game will be open an additional 3 hours so we can ring in the New Year with our friends at Disneyland! We'll also have a new hat to commemorate the celebration, it will be on sale starting the evening of the 31st and be on sale all New Years day!

Now back to testing some of these cool new goodies, including an item I'll talk about next week, something called 'VMK Tickets.' Hmmm. The plot thickens!

See you in the game,
Yavn

I see some flaws with it though. Line- No Limits. Line- Doesn't move any faster. # 2,980 in line is going to have a mighty long wait!

And what about Host games?! At the end of their time, do they just boot out all the people in line? I bet there will be a line well over 1,000 trying to get in. That's just a problem waiting to happen...

THANK YOU YAVN!

He FINALLY listened to us.. ya know we're pretty smart. ;)

Also, looks like Mickey's Toontown Fair is coming to VMK. Here we go Toontown!

Sure, 2000 people ahead of you but you can still walk around :o

Obviously not in effect yet.. can't get into todays event

DJCJ

Who knows. I'm sure that Toontown would more than likely have many rooms and (hopefully) character rooms.

Seeing as how it's a test run, could just be a code name just like any other test.

With rooms like Hula's Yard Sale the line will be thousands of people long! Didn't think this one out very well did you Yavn? With the Queue limit you can barely get a few hundred people through, how will you get the thousands through?

i think its a good idea, but i also think it will just make it even harder to get into host rooms having to wait behind hundreds of people. i think on top of giving you the number of people youre behind, they should give you a time slot that is when that queue should be up, and you can sign off and then sign back on during the given time slot and just wait behind the 20 or so people instead of waiting hours in someones guest room slowly counting down the number of people left. this makes it more like a real fastpass as well.

I see ups and downs to this i think it will be great to not have to sit and wait to get into a line forever. However this can be very bad also. On Saturday it took me an hour and a half to move fifty spaces in Hula's Yard sale. Can you imagine how long it will take when there are 500 people in line?

Oh great, no more room limits. My computer gets awful slow, running around the kingdom while waiting in line, oh I will crash so quickly...

If we dc, will we still have the pass in hand? Probably not..and with..oh say..600 or so people in front of me, well, let's just say that perhaps this VMK Pass won't last too long. At least in my opinion. :santa2:

Also, I'd just like to point out that doesn't Yavn and Staff remember the VMK Haunted Maze (or something like that..) Incident? At least, that's what I call it. Or the VMK Prize Machine Incident? Aww, those were so rememberable. I read practically a whole book waiting in line for those things, only to crash when I was within 10 people. And with all those players, getting in line to play host games..

Bye Bye Host Games. I never really went to them after getting this new laptop.

DJCJ

Yeah for some reason, VMK runs slow on Mac laptops.

In reality, I like the pass idea, but I see it being removed and revamped by Feb.

I remember the no queue limit thing. I, personally, loved it. And now with the pass making us able to visit other rooms?! I could care less if I need to wait an hour. I'd just spend my time doing what I'd do after the HOST_ event.

12-19-2006, 02:42 AM
Here's something I was thinking about with the fast pass. What if you do manage to get into a host game and you lose and you want to try again? Looks like the days of doing that are over. With there being no limit on the lines you will basicly get one shot to try and win and if you blow it well then your going to be out of luck. This is going to be a sure fire way to make the host prizes even more rare as well.

And what about Host games?! At the end of their time, do they just boot out all the people in line? I bet there will be a line well over 1,000 trying to get in. That's just a problem waiting to happen...

This will only be a problem if people go in with the expectation that just because they got in line for a Host Game, they'll also get a crack at the Host Game. Obviously, at first, most people will have this expectation but it won't take too long to realize that's just not a possible guarantee.

So it comes down to players making a judgement call. 120 people in line and 3 hours to go until the event ends? Sure, take those odds! Grab a pass and hang out until you're up to bat. But if it's at 1200 people with 3 minutes to go? Use a little common sense and don't expect to get in and don't waste your time and please don't complain that life isn't fair. If you honestly think that just because you're in line you're guaranteed to experience what's at the end of that line, you've obviously never been to Disneyland.

All in all, it's an improved system. It's just going to require players to be responsible with their decision making. Understand that it's going to be a risk and that there are no promises. At least you know you CAN get in line and that you can actually roam around and socialize while doing so, instead of having a load bar burned into your retina.

With DC 99% gone, this is a good idea. We just have to have a litttle more patience, that's all. The teleporter rooms that the Hosts open should go quickly. Thx again Yavn.

12-19-2006, 03:37 AM
Well what no limit means to me is one chance to win a host game and that's it. Here is scenario:

I get in host room. I lose said host game. I get back in line at, say, 600 people. The line moves at a regular host-game pace (slowly), and I never get back into the room to try again.

Arg!

Yes,yes, yes. Finally, an updated line idea. I love it. I will no longer have to click over and over! YES! I love that idea, exspecially how there will be no line limit. No more "Room is Full"!!! It is ALL great news. The number telling how many people are in the room, great. I can't wait. This idea rocks. Host events, are you ready, because I am. And these VMK tickets, I can't wait to hear about them. But I wonder how long it will take, next Monday is Christmas. Oh well. I hope it is something like I can purchase I ticket for a host event so when the room opens I can go straight in the room. I will pay up to 1,000 for that ticket. Unless the room is really special, then more. Finally a great update that will really help the game. That update in October, and now this. Merry Christmas, because that is my present from VMK.

Peeps!! I know it seems like there will be long queues but, if you get there as soon as it opens, you usally end up like #23. So now we can get in the queue now have to worry about anything, and when #5 comes around we'll be ready. Now we can wait in queues, get our daily VMK work done, and have fun with your virtual friends all at the same time!! VMK pass Rocks Hard and I personaly think it will work perfectly (unless there's loads of Bugs which there could be for the first couple of weeks).

next week, something called 'VMK Tickets.' Hmmm That Scary To Hear What That Means Are We Paying To Play Vmk Now Scary!

At a sane guess, I'd say the "Tickets" would be offering some kind of optional system to sell VMK Passes to your own homemade game room for credits, thus replacing the "Cash Turnstile" idea that doesn't seem to be talked about quite as much lately...

Particularly seeing as those earlier Turnstiles wouldn't quite jibe up to date with the whole new change in queue system--What's the point of a gate, if you're not worried about long lines anymore?

I hope hosts at LEAST limit the line to 100.

With real FastPasses, only a select few are let in every five minutes--They don't just hand them out to everybody.

Similarly, I would assume there's some extended limit to host games, but still a limit:
Rooms may eventually have lines of a hundred instead of fifty (the picture did show a "94", after all), but that you only get the clickable option ("If there are more than five people in line, you will be asked...") of a VMK Pass AFTER you've gotten in line...Which still isn't easy. It's now only a question of what you do while you're waiting.

And if you're #101 who gets the "too busy" pop-up...you'll still have to Try, Try Again.

I'd have to agree. It seems that almost every time something new comes out, all we can do is complain about it! Let's at LEAST give it a chance before we go off and complain about it. And also, can we try to talk about the good things that come with this? ;) Like, I always want to put on that finishing touch on my new room before I have to leave to get in line. But now, I can just spend the entire time im in line in my new room. Better yet, I always get messages while im in line but I can never answer them. Now, I'll be able to talk to them rather than message them! Thanks yavn, can't wait!

No, it'll be something inside the game. Im guessing that the tickets will be a way into certain host games and events. . .

My thoughts exactly. I am glad that they've come up with an idea to remedy the clicking, clicking, clicking that it takes to get into a Host Event, but I don't like the fact that now we'll probably only have one chance to win a game.

This thread almost sounds like a group of 12 years complaining! People we are playing a game that costs nothing to participate but your own time. Having played the game since just after beta, there is always a problem with lines. So you have to wait, at least you now have a better shot at getting into the game. As to those that want to get into the host games more that once, tough! Some of us never get into the game ever... Lets hear more positive and less negative unless this thread is moved to the rants!

I like the idea, though I'm not sure about taking the limit off the lines. It was long enough waiting behind 50 people.

But on the other hand, this solves my "Getting All My Messages Whilest I'm In Line" problem...

Also, now I can chill out or trade a bit while I wait. That's much better than listening my Black Eyed Peas album for the 3 Millionth time. XD

No clue. I though it was today, but I guess not. Pretty soon though.

When the mickeys on the guest room list are replaced with numbers, you'll know.

I see this in both good and not-so-good lights.

It definitely helps with the "click"-"swoosh"-"Sorry, the line's too long"-"click" phenomenon. We've all been frustrated with trying to get into a host room queue over and over and over and over again. With this, we'd be able to reserve a spot in the queue and still do other things. It's a very good option for the social aspects of VMK.

On the other hand, there is the issue that is bugging most players here. Long queue lines. The fear that you'd never get into a room, or get to re-enter if you don't win the prize you want. With 3 hour windows for host rooms, it could be that some folks miss out altogether due to any number of factors. It's valid, and I know that I'd be frustrated about it too.

The answer I think would satisfy everyone is this:

Multiple host rooms. Especially during high-traffic times of the day. If there's regular flow through, one room may be enough, but for rooms with games/quests/open-ended events, players linger, and don't leave to make room for others. The queue takes forever, and others miss out. Having 2 host rooms for the Tailgate Party, or for the Garage Sales make a lot of sense, and would help alleviate the worry that someone won't make it into a room in time.

It's really frustrating to try to get into a queue over and over again for 30 minutes at a time, only to get into a queue that takes an hour to get through because of players already inside lingering. Hosts either need to extend the hours of the rooms, set time limits for those inside, and boot them if they don't comply, or open multiple rooms with the same theme, so folks can actually get a chance to get in.

After all, they instance every other regular room in VMK, why not multiple host rooms?

the only thing i dont like about VMK pass is you can't play mini games

Personally, I don't mind waiting in line the old fashioned way (current way) for a while to get into a Host_ game. Once I get in line I can go do whatever I need to do (make dinner, do some laundry, finish emails, browse the threads on VMKf) and wait till I hear the Host_ room music to know when I'm in. What all of that means is that I'm not going to time out of the game when I'm waiting in line.

Now that we can walk around while in line, the most we're going to be able to do is chat with one another since we can't play mini games. I have to worry about timing out once I get into the Host_ line now?

I know exactly what our conversations are going to be, too - it's just what ppl post on Host_ event threads on VMKf. And I quote, "I'm in line at no. ive tree oh, how about u?" Or, "I wish we could play games and make credits while we wait in line."

For my first point (post #40 (http://www.vmkforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1296848&postcount=40)), I want to remind everyone about Host_Hula's Yard Sale this past weekend. Some of you were understandably upset about trying to get in for nearly two hours with no success...then VMK crashing...then VMK resurrecting and not having the last part of the Yard Sale. Me? I got in line right when she opened the room and waited behind 44 other people...for nearly two hours. When it was almost my turn to trade, VMK went down for the count.

When this new system is in place on January 1, many many of you will get in line for such an event. The line will move at a slower-than-snail's pace. The Host_ will be able to trade with 70 of us over three hours, and the other 1000 or so in line will not have a chance to even get into the Host_ room. Were you able to even make credits during that time? No. Were you more successful at getting into a Host_ game than before this change? No. Will you probably be more upset about Host_ events after that than before this new system? Yes.

My solution? Allow us to walk around while we're in line, but keep the queue limit at 50. Those who don't get in line can choose to try or not.

You're right. This might cause even more anger then the original idea of HOST rooms. I can't see any real answer to this.

My idea is to maybe make an estimated wait time for each event. It would definately help to see if you will make it into the room.
Also, make a timer to see how long the event will last. It won't fix anything, but it'll help a bit.

I'm not sure what the solution is, but I do like your idea.

Then again, I've never had trouble getting in line due to my DSL connection. But I'm sure people with Dial-Up would have a problem with that (I had it once, I would click the VMKForums link, then go out and do stuff for three hours, then come back and hope it loaded by then. Most people aren't that slow, but I was. XD)

Last year there was only around 100 people for the host game, it took a half hour to get in, and everyone would dc, like nobody would win. But now dc's gone, and i'm willing to wait as long as it takes!

Even if "as long as it takes" is three hours or more, and not actually getting into the host room? That is a very plausible situation considering the number of people who are playing during host events.

It will only be 100 around at most players in queue trust me! I know you're thinking it will be around 2000 but it's not, players will be doing other things, and the line will constantly be going in a circle of players entering and going in back of you, you're overreacting.

I'm not overreacting, I'm being realistic. Considering the number of players who are usually on during the late afternoon/early evening (currently is between 4500 and 5000), I don't think for a second that having a queue line as long as 1000 people is unrealistic. Nor do I think I'm overreacting. ;) If your prediction of 100 people comes true I will be astonished, albeit gratefully so.

I think people need to realize that nothing is promised to you when it comes to Host games. There will always be circumstances that make it difficult for you to get into a Host game and that's why the prizes awarded in the Host games are rare. If VMK makes it easy for everyone to get into a Host room, then we'll quickly lose any special value attached to those prizes and they might as well just sell them in the Emporium.

There are basically two types of people who play this game: Those who think everything should be free and easy and readily available (which, I've explained in other posts would actually destroy the game) and those who want certain items to be rare and (at least somewhat) difficult to obtain. It's one of the few challengs this game presents. So I like that while the line system is being improved, it's still going to be a bit of a chore to get into the Host game. That's the way it should be.

As I stated earlier in this thread (page 4, I think - check it out) if you don't like the length of the line you're in and don't think you'll have time to make it in, don't wait in line! Take a little responsibility and realize that VMK will never be able to make things perfect but at least they're trying.

With all that said, GoofyGeggy did bring up a great point about having to avoid "Timing Out" while you're in a long line. Some of us may not feel like having to stay active and connected by walking around and talking to people the entire time we're in the queue. I, too, liked the option of getting in line and then leaving my computer and doing something else while I waited for the Host music to start playing. So they do need to offer a fix for this problem; perhaps disabling the "Time Out" feature for people who have Line Passes?

Here's the NEW 21/12 update-

12/21 - *HOLIDAY UPDATE*
Is it possible for a Quest to be "too popular"? If you're talking about the Disneyland Holiday Quest it can be. The good news? You came and you Quested. The bad news, due to an unexpected demand and overwhelming amount of you completing the Holiday Quest, we've now out of Holiday Reward Cards at Disneyland! (Remember how I told you to get to the Park and do the Quest? The reason was pretty simple: our card stock was limited.)
Guest going to Disneyland shouldn't worry though, our friends from Halloween Town have offered a helping hand to make everyone's Holiday jolly. Launching tomorrow (Friday, December 22nd) is a "new" Holiday Quest — a Haunted Mansion Holiday Quest and the prize is the Halloween Mickey Pumpkin. So if you're heading to Disneyland don't forget to play the new Holiday Mansion Quest. And for our friends visiting the Magic Kingdom, remember, it's like that fine print we have on the back of those in-Park Quest cards, Reward cards are subject to availability, and may change without notice. So when I say get to the Park and do those Quest – get to the Park and do the Quest!

You guys are just looking at your side. They are keeping the Holiday rare by not making extra cards. ;)

Way to go, VMK! I am very happy for this new edition we will get soon. This is kind of like a fastpass. Thank goodness we don't have to wait in the line for HOST games (if we're lucky enough to get in the line at all) Espacially if they are Trade rooms in which we have to wait 20 mins(?).
About a week ago when I was in a HOST line I was thinking to myself, "I wish there was a way I could do something else in VMK while waitin' here."
Now I can, yes!!!

I was at DLR yesterday and found out in person that the Holiday Quest was discontinued. However, the castmember I spoke to said that while they had run out of Christmas Quest Wreaths and Christmas Quest Toy Soldiers they would be giving out Golden Snowmen until they completely ran out.

I'm not sure if anyone has gone to the park today to find out whether that's true with the Haunted Mansion Holiday Quest starting up but you may want to bring your Holiday Quest with you just in case they still have "extra" Snowmen left to hand out. :snow_cool:
