My best recommendation is to take it nice and slow. Don't move your boat forward or in reverse at all. That uses too much gas. Try to center the animals in your shot as best you can, this is not possible with all of them, just do the best you can. I believe someone has written a help guide to the game somewhere on here if you try or have tried these tips and you still need help :)

Would like to take this opprutunity to let you know there is a great guide on the wiki [ disneysonlineworlds.com ] and it helped me to get the 30K (well I wrote it but -_-)

You wont lose gas that way. Just don't press up and you will be fine :)
