If you struggle when they put them on, it hurts a lot. And when they are done putting them on, your mouth may be sore, but it passes. And for me, every month I get a new color. When your mouth is sore, try eating soft foods.

Man I really want Braces, it would complete my Nerdish Look.

Ugh I'm getting braces too =(. I already have had an appliance in the roof of my mouth ( the people didnt notice till like 6 weeks later a wire was stuck in my mouth) and right now i have a bottom and top one in. Ugh the thing is like glued on my teeth but they made the little bands on my back teeth, go way up in my gum and it bled for a long time =(. I hope braces arent worse then this is all i can say, oh yeah and good luck to you too!

I got my braces inside of my teeth aka Lingual braces. Instead of the brackets on the front of your teeth they are behind your teeth so nobody know you have braces unless you tell them. :)

i had braces. i used to have fangs, like on the sides of my mouth, but braces bought then down and now my teeth are perfectly straight.

it stinks to use floss though. did your orthodontist (sp?) say no soda? if he did, just ignore him and use a straw. just remember to put it in the back of your mouth.

braces feel as if somebody grabbed your teeth, and they are trying to pull them out. it really hurts after your teeth get tightened, and the first few days of braces. your gums will kind of hurt too, so careful of that when your close your mouth, because braces like to scratch your gums.

if your gums still hurt a lot because of braces, tell your orthodontist (sp?). he should give you this gross clear thingy ma bobber. it is like Gum, only you put it on your braces and it makes the metal smooth. all you but there is this major bump there though when you use it.
i would start looking for a mini toothbrush set so you could take it to school. you need to brush after every meal, and it is way embarassing if your walking around school with your lunch in your mouth. trust me.

try to stock up on ice cream and stuff. after your braces are put it, it will hurt a lot. the first week is the worst, because your teeth are moving the most.
after your mouth is free of braces, it will feel like this slimy goo is on your teeth.

oh and before you go to get your braces on, make sure you brush your back teeth really well. the back teeth will be completely covered in metal.. for how many years you are having braces. i only had them for two years. so think about it: your back teeth and areas on the front of all your teeth will see no brushing for a long time.

WARNING!- if your orthodontist (sp?) says the word "bands", start crying and crying and ask for any other alternative. they are so annoying! you have to wear them 24/7, so you cant talk and open your mouth wide. but if you DO open your mouth wide, it hurts A LOT and sometimes can snap the rubber band in half, which really is bad. you can take them out when you eat, but other than that it seems as if your in a horrible nightmare. (but you only get bands if your teeth overlap or underlap =])

oh and if you like popcorn, i would start eating your way though lots of bags right now. it stinks when it gets in your teeth >_<

oh and when you get them off, you will smile a lot because your teeth are worth two thousand dollars =]

Same here, I'm getting braces soon. I already had the x-ray and stuff. Most of the people at our school and they said it didn't hurt. Like most people said it's mostly about age. I'm guessing it's going to hurt for me because I have to get a few teeth pulled out. Let's hope that I don't have to though. I mean I'd rather have all my teeth then have holes in my mouth. Anyone have to get any teeth pulled out?

Eh, they aren't so bad. When I first got them, of course, they hurt a lot. You get used to them after a few weeks. I recently got bands for them. Those hurt at first...I called it animal tourture (sp..? I can't think this early..LOL) cause technically we are..in a way...animals...LOL! Back on topic, I'm used to them now! I get mine off in a few months. Once you get used to them, they aren't bad.

I eat gum, popcorn, carmel (not the really sticky kind, even though I never liked it anyways LOL!!) But with the recent bands, I don't eat gum, because I'll have to take them out and well...they would be out for a while, cause I love gum!! LOL!

omg lucky, i want braces because my teeth aren't really as straight as i want them to be and im kinda scared to get them because my mom said her friend had braces and her friend said they hurt, and my friend who had braces since like 1st - 4th grade said they dont hurt alot exept for the first week and when you get them tightened. My top front teeth go over most of my bottom front teeth ::(( so im scared to get braces because if i close my mouth my teeth might hit the braces >_<. And good luck when you get your braces ::)) i hope they dont hurt to bad ::))

When They first Put them On, It Kinda Hurts But Not Much. It Seems and Hurts Different for different People!

Just Go in thinking positive! Maybe take some kind of Pain Medicine before you get them on so that it starts working before you get them on, Then it may hurt less.

Just go in Cofindent!

Some tips are:
Get new Colors every month to get a new stylish look!
Don't listen if people make fun of your Braces! Your The One That's going to have an Ah-Mazing smile when your done with those braces!
Be confident and Do what your Orthadontics say! You'll Get those Braces off FAST!
Chill and Have fun! You'll Get used to them and People will get used to your Braces! Give it time! Have Fun! ;)

It's not that bad. I've had em since August. They started to hurt about four or so hours after I got them on. I did hear that after the second tightening it hurts worse. When your teeth are sore, I'd recommend cold pudding, or just pudding in general if you like it. It's basically all I ate for a couple days after I got my braces. Oh, and those pop-tart snack bar things. They are soft, and a good breakfast food item. It does seem to take forever for them to put the braces on. Don't worry though, the process does not involve needles of any sort. (Or at least it should not.) If you are worried about it I'd say to ask your ortho (orthodontist) before they begin putting them on about the process. When you know what's going on it's not so bad. It does feel a little weird in your mouth at first, but you get used to it. Good luck! :) ~CL_MsFantasyGal

Don't get too scared, they aren't terrible. I got a while ago, and the only bad time is when you get them on at first. They hurt VERY badly for the first few days. I suggest eating soup. Don't try hard foods for a few days. But they aren't that bad, besides.. It fixes your teeth! (Be careful what you eat also)

Make sure you don't eat anything gummy or chewy. It will get stuck all over your braces. AND: There are only 2 painful parts :D :

1. Getting them put on/tightened
2. Getting them off.

I completely disagree. I just had braces (I just got them off, actually), and getting them ON did not hurt at all. It just made my jaw sore from having it open for so long. Getting them off does not hurt at all. In fact, it feels great (but your gums will feel ENORMOUS and your teeth will feel extremely slimy). Unless your teeth are sensitive or they're aching at the time you get them off, it doesn't hurt at all. If they are aching, it will hurt a little when they scrape the glue off your teeth (seeing as they are putting pressure on your teeth). All they do is pop off the brackets one-by-one, and then they just pull them off. It's really simple.

Now, if you've had spacers, you have my sympathies. However, the worst is behind you. Spacers hurt about 5x more than any discomfort you'll feel with braces. The only time that you'll feel any pain is when they put in a new wire (or put bends in your current one - now that caused me some pain), or when they put in a chain. You won't have to worry about getting a chain for a long while though. They usually put them in when you're close to being finished. Rubber bands are a little uncomfortable for a while, until they pull your teeth back to where they should be. It only lasts a few days or so.

When you get your retainer, that will cause you a little discomfort for the first day, because your teeth want to move. If the retainer is keeping them in line, your teeth can't move, and it will hurt a little bit for about the first day. Have heart, though, and keep it in! It will be the biggest mistake of your life if you don't wear it. It will be $5,000 down the drain if you opt not to wear it.

And by the way, stock up on mouthwash so you can soak your retainer it when you eat, because your retainer will smell horrible.

Don't worry about braces, I'm just about to get them off :D.. The only painful part is when they tighten them but it only hurts for a few days or even just one day. Rubberbands hurt too for a while, but your mouth gets used to having them in there. Eat food that doesn't take much to chew when you are getting them tightened. Remember braces make your teeth straight, so do what your ortho says to do.. unlike I did for a while, it just makes you wear them longer.

I know what I am getting I am getting braces under my teeth (you can't see them.) And since I am a working actor my orthadonist says I can take them out when I work then put em back on....its not really to straighten my teeth....my JAW actually! :o

don't worry about them I had braces before. Just let me tell you from experience, that your teeth will be a little sore when they first go on and after the first time they get adjusted your teeth will be sore but after that it will be no problem. I just remember the ay i had them taken off and i was so happy to see my straight teeth. so I wouldn't worry about it the time will go by fast. before you know it you will forget all about them

As a person who has braces both as a kid AND an adult, I can say that the part that is painful is when they are adjusted at your appointments. However, the end result is worth it.

I had braces for a full 5 years (to get straight) as a teen and now I am in my second year (for TMJ) as an adult. They feel the same as when I was a teen. Bah!

Wax will be your new best friend. Great for putting over brackets to smooth out roughness.

There is a brush that Butler makes that you can use to bursh between your teeth and under the wires. It has a blue handles and various little brushes you can put on it. I heart that thing and wish it was around 15 years ago.

If your parents can swing it, go for speed braces. Yes, they are visible but the process goes much faster then traditional or clear braces. Also, you might be a bit more sore after the adjustment but it does not last as long. Often I can see a difference in 2 days after an adjustment.

You can chew some gums as long as you are careful. Get the kinds tha does not stick to dental work and only one piece at a time, not a whole mouthful. I've also been fine with chips, popcorn, pretzels, nuts, candy of all kind and sodas. Do not ear jawbreakers or crunch ice! The only downside to sodas was they ate through the little rubber bands around my brackets.

Here's a partial list of things I found I could eat:
Applesauce, Scrambled Eggs, Oatmeal, Cottage Cheese
Broth Soups, Refied Beans (with melted cheese)
Mashed Taters, Cream of rice, Milkshakes, Smoothies
Yogurts, Vienna Sausages (if you like them)
Sweet Potatoe casserole, Mashed Carrots
Creamed Spinach, Stuffing

They put a big plastic thing around your face.
First they will get everything out, put on the plastic face cover and then start the process.
It hurts a tone. I cried for the whole 2 hours. Once you get them on, they will ask what colors you want. My first color was black, my last color was pinnk:). Well I got my top ones on no bottoms. If you're getting tops and bottoms, it might be 3 or 4 hours, depending on how long you have to wait with the cover over your face. Always keep your eyes closed, usually they will tell you to keep your eyes closed, and you must. If you dont you will get very scared of the equipment in your mouth, and then will probably have nightmares. Dont rub your tongue over your brackets. It will make your teeth hurt more. Just sit in one spot in the dentist chair during it and dont struggle, try signing in your head, or thinking of a happy place(It works like a charm). 2 or 3 days after you get them on, you should feel alright.
I was eating anything I wanted in a week. Just obey your dentists and you'll be fine. They let me eat popcorn since I got a different kind of braces.

Then that's a retainer I believe. You get impressions for retainers alot, only like.. once for braces I believe, if they dont look at your X-ray's.

There isn't really anything to worry about, I just got braces today. My mouth is in pain but it's much better than spacers :) I agree with WafflePrincess, you get a free grill! haha :p good-luck
