OK, look, SpinMarty's joking aside:

When you get on the internet, you use something called an IP address. Everything on the Internet is reached through just such an address, but directories out there convert, say, "www.vmkforums.com" into the proper address (###.###.###.###) without you seeing it.

So, when you get on, you have an address as well. Every site you go to, be it vmkforums, disney.com, vmk.com - whatever - can see what IP addresses are connecting to it. If you have to log in, as you do with VMK, they'll then know what IP your home uses.

So when VMK wants to ban someone's whole household, they ban the IP address, because everyone in your house uses that address.

Must be a dang big offense to get your whole household banned.

P.S. for those who are "scared" of this, you can now see why the moderators always try to make members understand the Internet is not very safe.

No, it's just how the Internet works. If your computer couldn't be identified, VMK wouldn't be able to show you your character.
