Yavn Speaks 10/30

This week Yavn reports from Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party and gets "spaced out" on all the upcoming changes to VMK! It's all live and direct from Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida!

2006 World Tour

Greetings from Walt Disney World! More specifically, the Magic Kingdom - where I'm typing and riding at the same time (you gotta love that Blackberry)! I'm here checking out Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party - where everyone is arriving all dressed up! This is my first time at the event and I've heard the fireworks are pretty special. The VMK team has had a great week here, planning new Quests and additions to the game -- and now we can hardly wait to get this cool stuff into the game!

I hope you've enjoyed Halloween in VMK. I think you will be even more impressed with what we are planning for the holidays, and if all goes well you'll be up to your "ears" in holidays in just a few days!!

Hey, but what you're really here for is some inside info, right? So without any further ado here's the 411 on what's going to be coming to VMK:

Space. The Final Frontier?

Sneaky players that peeked ahead on the Calendar noticed a rather spacey theme for November. So I guess it really doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out November is Space Month - but the real news is we'll be kicking off the celebration with a 3-day Space Mountain Ride-A-Thon!!!

That's right, we've created a brand new set of ride tracks, but we have more exciting new twists - join us November 3rd, 4th, and 5th and win special track pieces -- before they go on sale! But that's not all, we'll be blasting off the month in style with an Individual Ride Building Competition! (More details are coming soon, until then hold on tight!) So hop on Space Mountain this weekend and ride to win! Itching to see some of those tracks?...

Win cool track pieces BEFORE they go on sale - it all happens in the Space-Mountain Ride-A-Thon this weekend, Nov. 3rd, 4th & 5th.

Hooray for Holidays!

Well, that about wraps things up for this week - I'm off to catch one last ride on the Haunted Mansion before the fireworks start - I hope you get lots of treats and no tricks this Halloween - and speaking of treats, I've got one for you - just take a look at the screen below!

http://avmk.disney.go.com/avmk_v0300/en_US/media/calendar/2006-1030-YavnSpks-Holiday%20Teaser.jpg

How's that for a treat? Have a Happy Halloween!

Yavn

Dear Yeti,

You've got questions, Yeti has answers
When Disneyland first opened, none of the rides were roller coaster-type thrills - what was the first fast ride at a Disney park?

- Pogoagogo

Dear Pogoagogo,

Inspired by the movie Third Man on the Mountain, the Matterhorn was part of a huge development project to enhance Fantasyland. Built by Arrow Dynamics, the Matterhorn Bobsleds was not only the first fast ride at any Disney Park (the attraction debuted in 1959, just four years after Disneyland opened), it also has another distinction - it's the world's first tubular steel roller coaster! Steel roller coasters existed before the Matterhorn but the cars rode on flat steel tracks, instead of tubular track. Today, almost all steel coasters ride on tube steel tracks - all decedents of the Matterhorn!

Dear Yeti,

I read somewhere that Disney animated films use Rotoscope techniques? What is Rotoscoping?

MissElizabethT

Dear MissElizabethT,

Besides a fancy technical term, rotoscoping is a technique used by animators to capture the lifelike and fluid movements of actors or animals. Basically it works like this: Animators capture live-action on film, then print the frames of action and use the images as a guide for animation. Original rotoscopes used by major Hollywood studios were actually projected onto glass and then traced by a studio animator. Disney animators actually preferred to use the action just as a guide for the animation, filling in the detail and animation by hand.

Do you have a question for the Yeti?

Send it to me through the Contact Us section at the bottom of this page. Be sure to have your VMK registration info with you (the email and information you registered with) and select Dear Yeti from the drop down menu. Each week I'll answer a question or two here in the Newsletter.

Trading
When trading, make sure that you get a fair deal by double checking the trade window. You can see what you are giving and what you are getting. Always make sure what you are trading for is in the trade window. If you think a trade isn't fair, please don't trade. There are plenty of opportunities to find what you need.

Push's Trashcan Trivia

Who voiced Mickey Mouse in his earlier years?

Know the answer?

Send your answer using Contact Us at the bottom of this or the main VMK webpage. Be sure to have your VMK registration info with you and select Push's Trash Trivia from the drop down menu. Out of all the correct answers, three players will be randomly drawn as the winners and sent a cool prize. But hurry! Only entries submitted by the close of game on Friday will be accepted.

Here's the answer to last weeks Trash Trivia question:

Q: What devilish Disney villain was brought to life by the animation of Bill Tytla (with the help of music by Modest Mussorgsky)?

A: High atop his perch on Bald Mountain, Chernabog cast a dark shadow over a sleepy village in the Disney Classic, Fantasia.

Did you know: Animator Bill Tytla borrowed Ukrainian myths from his childhood, and concept imagery created by Danish artist Kay Nielsen to bring the frightening Chernabog to life. Horror-film star Bela Lugosi performed live-action reference for the giant demon, but Tytla was not satisfied with the end result and re-shot much of the reference footage.

Congratulations to the 3 lucky (and randomly picked) players that sent in the correct answer for last week's question! Your prize is on its way!

What makes a Guest Room award-worthy?

Guest or Game Rooms that stand out show originality in concept and design. It could be a use of conventional furniture in unconventional ways, the use of a theme or color, or humor. Game rooms that get the nod offer a new game idea or a new twist on an old favorite. In all rooms we look for room owners who welcome everyone with a smile and show a willingness to answer questions about their room.

I guess because vmk cant get carried away with religion, and Christmas is the main thing involved in Winter Holidays. However, there will probably be at least a pin for both Christmas and Hannukkah again.

Oh no, this is the same religion topic we delt with last Holiday. Looks like a lot of spam posts and deleted ones will happen this year . . again (not good)

Last year the "star" pin for a holiday was sold, obviously refering to a single group but no cross or budda or fish pin was sold. Christmas is not a religious symbol and is poorly represented by Santa but clearly that particular star is representitive of a single group. Wonder how such a blatant religious reference got through last year?

Great observation! It's probably because when it comes to Christmas, you think more about darkness and decorations (a.k.a. lights mainly), more than daylight and idk, snow. (Snow works both way, i'm just trying to get my point across. lol)

Haha nice hat. I am looking forward to this ride competition, although hopefully the limit will be around 10 rooms. I won't have quite enough credits to decorate or compete with players who have enough funds to build 20 room rides. I can't wait for the new ride tracks come out. I do hope that by "blasting off thee month" with the ride competition, they mean ending it, not introducing it. Players that just spent all of their moolah on Halloween clothing and furniture will need to be given some time to accumulate credits to buy a whole new set of tracks and theming before actually building their rides. By "soon" I also hope he means next week!

And the decorations are so nice. I hope they were in WDW at least partly for ideas for light decorations from the beautiful show in WDW every year.

Another survivor of last year, where "Grim Grinning Ghosts" continued to ring on Main St. ALLLLL throughout November. >_<
Fortunately, they've sinced learned how to change the scenery, and it now takes them less than a month to do it.

(And cool as Space Mountain is, can we STOP at four kinds of ride tracks?--
I'm just happy if they bring back the Tomorrowland prize rooms and the space suit.)

true. Most likely it does have to do with a preview (i believe he mentioned something in a newsletter during this month that there will be a preview/sneak peek during November). However, it could refer to tons of hats, lol. I however figured it had something to do with music or musical items that relate to the Holiday theme.

Ah, don't you love the many Holiday threads and posts every year. lol

Im thinking about Christmas Decorations early. We want Turkey Day!

I'm surprised nobody has commented much on just what Yavn said about the tracks! Some very interesting suggestions here!

For starters, lets look at this edited picture:
http://img445.**************/img445/7866/20061030yavnspkssmnttrcuc0.jpg (http://**************)

What are those two things that I outlined in red? They're right next to branches in the track, and given the direction of the track (shown by the person in it), the branches are a split. Could these be track switches? OMG! We can now control which way a person goes on the track!

What I think is more confusing to me is what the item I outlined in yellow is. It isn't a teleporter (we can see what those look like), although it is similar. It almost looks like a camera lens. Perhaps it is a turnstile or some other way to let the own let just one person through at a time!

And this leads me to wonder about something that Yavn said:

...hope you don't mind if it cost a few credits, but it's a small price to pay to get the pieces before they're officially released)

They'll be charging for a guest room experience! Will they let us common players be able to do that as well? Finally! A way we can charge a modest ammount to play our games!

I'm excited... If these are true, they will give some great new features to room, game, and quest designers. They will truly empower us to make some great things.

I looked at the picture yesterday but my eyes are not that great. I did notice the fake teleporter thing and thought that it might be a sign or some type of room decoration. I saw the boxes also and wondered what they could be as well. Wouldn't that be neat if they were power cells and your car got a boost when you passed by it? If they are switches, hopefully the players can control them not just the owner. If they are player controlled then maze possibilities just became huge!
I did see those little lights/supports all over the place similar to the currently available lanterns. The ones in the room remind me of the ones you see on people lawns at night. There also seems to be a second type under the tracks:D

Oh yea, I thought they discouraged players from "pay to play"? Has this now changed? If that is true won't players be less likely to play games created by players? I would only want to pay if the reward was worth it like with pirates. Most times even if I lose a game of pirates I break even. I understand it may allow players to offer better prizes but won't it also be more like gambling?

It is right in the middle of the track, however, so I'm not sure. Perhaps it is an accelerator. That makes sense too.

See above - yeah!

I disagree. We already have the ability for players on the track to change direction. Unless you mean other players standing along side - which might make for some interesting things. But I'd still rather something that just the room owner could control. (But you're probably right, if it is a switch.)

They specifically discouraged it for the quests, and I'm wondering if that was just because they had no good way to enforce or monitor it. If they have a way to do that, and perhaps force the fee to be small (say, no more than 50 credits), then it might be interesting. But as you note - you really need a counterpart as well - something that gives out prizes. (That is cheaper and easier to use than the generator.)

And while I see the argument about "gambling" and the problems with scamming to play, I also have a very real issue that I spend an awful lot of credits to give people prizes, and get nothing back. I certainly don't expect to make much if they actually do let us charge for things, but it offsets it a little bit.

Guys, we might not even get this "pay to play" thing. It might just be for Yavn/VMK Staff. But if we do get it, they better get it right. I can think of a lot of things that could go wrong.

But if they do get it right, it would be really awesome.

Hmm, I've always wondered why they wouldn't let us have a prize room like staff. It would be like a kiosk but when you enter the room you get a prize, not when you finish a task. I think this would be so much easier on our parts. Anyone else agree?

PS: Im going to have to agree that the thing in the middle looks like a turnstile for the ride.

I know. But I'll be quite irritated if this becomes another thing that staff can use (badly), but that us mere mortals can't have, even if we can do something useful with it.

You know, I absolutely love how all they have to do to release a new item is copy/paste the coding from the Splash Mountain ride tracks, change the sprites to fit a different ride, and make an event for it's grand release.

What surprises me more is that they can pull it off, while most other games would never get away with it XD.

The Everest tracks were similar to the river tracks, but had smaller turns.
The slide tracks are like everest tracks, but have the up and down slides.
It looks like the space mountain tracks are just like slide tracks - but there are at least two unexplained objects in the picture.

single height crystal/power rods - for up and down pieces

double height crystal/power rods - for up and down pieces

merge or split sections (could be both) joining track into one or splitting it into two paths

Up pieces

down pieces

entry pieces

and the direction of the flow is indicated by the blue light spot at one end of the piece (not sure about up and down, no spot)
