Well, I have noticed that a few forums have been associated with the COPPA act. It means that you can't register with written permission unless you're 13 right? Is VMK Forums associated with the act?

Wendot 10-19-2006, 09:27 PM I believe if you're under 13, we require a parent's email address ...something along the lines of what VMK does. Tris-Remix 10-19-2006, 09:29 PM Well I think the 13 year old rules is like for teenager type forums, but this is like a kids kinda forum, I think it would be a bad idea for over 13 because most of us are kids. Federal law requires any time you request information from a child under the age of 13, the parents give consent. Them's the breaks. Therefore, to comply with federal law, we must ask a parent email address if the user is under 13 (and divulges said information). Correct me if I'm wrong, please! :) I'm not always right but I think I remember this one. :) AwesomePawsome~AKA~Stevee 10-20-2006, 01:11 AM Actually, I think it's a good thing we have all the different ages. I'm older and if they didn't allow kids above 13, me and a lot of the people my age wouldn't be allowed here. There's quite a few older people playing VMK that know about the site. It's a good thing they ask for the parents' email adress. Just throwing in my thoughts on this. If i'm taking it right(what you said), you're saying the request for parental consent is a bad idea because the game/this forum is mostly made of kids? I mod Toontown Central, and we get these types of users all the times, young and old, the COPPA act is to ensure each of the younger one's safety on the site (and sometimes in game, seeing as how you meet other players). For example, the game TTC is a fansite for happens to have free chat, not a VMK dictionary. There are censors yes but more free chat than none. Personal info can be given through game and possibly on the site, too(PM). We also require parental consent for those under 13 to help protect them from anything NOT supposed to be given out to others. Hopefully those that are older have good judgement in what to and what not to do. The same goes for here, the same things can happen, and it's not all kids here;pretty sure I can guarantee that! ;) The COPPA act is just for safety, if it's not enforced, then, well, worse things could happen. Hope I didn't speak against something you weren't even talking about, LOL. Miss H Maribeth 10-20-2006, 02:10 AM I know that if you sign up and are under 13, not only does your parent receive an email that you signed up, every time you update your profile information, it sends an email to your parents. I think this is a good idea. It ensures parents know where their kids are going, and when they update their profile with potentially harmful information (such as addresses and phone numbers). This forum is primarily for children ages 8 - 14, seeing as that is the primary age group playing VMK. Gtg in rush Qui-gon 10-20-2006, 02:47 AM Of course I hope we all understand there's no way the mods can track this. A kid could be nine but put down he's thirty-four. Although I'm not recommending this at all, it also goes for the e-mail addresses. Right now, there is no way to track how old someone is and if the e-mail address goes the the parents inbox. It's great to have this 13 and under thing but I just wanted to make that clear. It's sad really. ~Q/S Evil Kid Bugs 10-20-2006, 04:24 AM Well, since Nick is in Aussieland and -rcv-/Kid Bugs is in the Great White North and I'm just a figment of everyone's imagination we aren't worried about the COPPA laws in the USofA although those weenies do sorta follow that stuff but anyway the ones who will be going down when The Man comes will be the mods and admins who happen to be in the USofA. -ekb- im.a.princess 10-20-2006, 04:29 AM Its a smart rule but who would actually go to their parents and ask for their consent? uh no one slayer12345678910 10-20-2006, 04:45 AM Its a smart rule but who would actually go to their parents and ask for their consent? uh no one well your wrong their, i have asked my parents for atleast 5 different sites if i could join Sarahisme 10-20-2006, 05:01 AM Its a smart rule but who would actually go to their parents and ask for their consent? uh no one Um, me. I always make sure my momma knows what i'm doin', and who i'm talkin' to. Or i'd get a lickin'... Or I just wouldn't be here right now. I think it's a really smart rule. Eviie 10-20-2006, 05:07 AM Um, me. I always make sure my momma knows what i'm doin', and who i'm talkin' to. Or i'd get a lickin'... Or I just wouldn't be here right now. I think it's a really smart rule. Agreed. I always let my parents know before signing up cause some sites have many ill-minded grown ups so i just let my parents know by simply saying 'Mom can i join this forums site based on VMK?' she usually just looks over the website and lets me join :] Sarahisme 10-20-2006, 05:15 AM Agreed. She trusts me enough to know what appropriate sites will look like. So far, VMKF has two thumbs up from my mommy. :) AceGoalkeeper 10-20-2006, 05:23 AM I believe if you're under 13, we require a parent's email address ...something along the lines of what VMK does. Yea, i'm pretty sure you're right.. But, i can't really remember if you're right or not, since i joined so long ago.. :| - Ace Pinkdust 10-20-2006, 05:37 AM I don't ask my parents about most sites. If I know they wouldn't approve, I don't go on it. If I'm not sure, I'll look over the site for a couple days to see what goes on and if it looks alright, I'll join. So I don't have to ask, but I don't hide anything either. :) Maribeth 10-20-2006, 11:20 AM Of course I hope we all understand there's no way the mods can track this. VMKJen 10-20-2006, 01:17 PM Well i asked my mom about this site i said can i go on this like guide thing about vmk. and she said if its about vmk, then Yes. i was so happy :) |
