Chapter 1
Jake sighed as he stared at his empty room. He was moving from New York to New Jersey that day. He was eleven years old and his little sister, Nicole, was nine. “Why do we have to move? All of my friends are here, in this town not that town,” Jake has previously said. But, his mother never gave him a real answer. All she said was, “Because your fathers work has moved and unless you want to starve you have to be reasonable,” But Jake didn’t want to move, can’t his parents understand that? Nicole didn’t think that it was so great either, but she just kept quiet. “Jake, c’mon!” she called from downstairs. Jake picked up his suitcase and walked outside to the car. His father, Mr. Woods, was sitting in the drivers seat, his mother, Mrs. Woods, was sitting in the passenger seat, and Nicole was sitting on the left side in the backseat. Jake tossed his suitcase into the trunk and sat on the right side of the backseat. “You’re both going to make lots of new friends!” Mrs. Woods said happily. “I doubt it…” Jake mumbled. “Oh, don’t be so pessimistic!” Mr. Woods said, trying to cheer Jake up. Mrs. Woods nodded in agreement, but Jake just sighed again. As they began to drive away, Jake stared at his old house. He had lived there ever since he was born. Nicole was listening to her CD player and their parents were talking quietly to each other. Jake took out a new book that his Aunt Karren had given him. It was titled, Haunted. ‘Haunted?’ thought Jake, ‘What kind of book is named… Haunted?’ He looked on the back to see a summary. It said, ‘Haunted… Is all that the kids thought. This house is haunted, everything is haunted…’ “What!” Jake blurted out. “Jake, keep it down! I’m trying to listen to my music!” Nicole scolded. “And we’re trying to have a conversation…” their parents added in. “Sorry...” Jake muttered as they continued down the road. “In one hour we’ll be in our new home!” Mrs. Woods said joyfully. “Oh joy…” Jake said sarcastically.
Chapter 2
Finally, they arrived at their new home. It was a large, tan house. Jake and Nicole stared up at the house. “Come unpack!” Mrs. Woods said. Jake went over and grabbed his suitcase out of the trunk and walked inside his new home. He walked up the stairs into a room that his parents said that was his. His parents had already set up a bookshelf, so Jake began to stack books on there. But, instead of putting the book Haunted on the shelf he put it on his bed. After about five hours everyone unpacked most of their things. Mrs. Woods and Mr. Woods called Jake and Nicole downstairs for dinner. Their stove wasn’t working that great, so they had ordered pizza. Jake took a minute to smell the delicious aroma of sauce, cheese, and pepperoni. “Well? Are you going to eat or what?” Mr. Woods asked as he cut a slice. Jake nodded and took a bite. Everyone had big smiles on their faces because of how good the pizza was. “Can we get this every night?” Nicole asked, her mouth full of pizza. “We will get it sometimes, but not every night!” Mrs. Woods said with a laugh. “Aww man!” Nicole moaned. “Remember you two, tomorrow you have school,” Mr. Woods reminded them. Jake and Nicole nodded. “Well, get to bed!” Mrs. Woods said. Jake and Nicole quickly got dressed and went to bed.
