Chapter One
CHA-CHING! BEEP, BEEP, the cash register went as Alyssa as she collected the money she had earned from the past hour at the local fast-food place. Turning the wheel on her mp3 player, she selected her favorite song and started belting out the tunes.
“Since you been gone, I can’t breathe for the first time…” A very mysterious man came up to the Rush-Hour Burgers counter, the place where Alyssa was collecting her money.
“Excuse me, miss?” Alyssa wasn’t disturbed by the man in a black suit, until she closed the cash register and looked up. She fingered her mp3 player in her pocket and managed to turn it off just as she opened her mouth.
“Hello sir. Today we have our special; Buy a number 3, 6, or 9 and get a free slushy! May I help you?”
“Actually, miss…” The large man glanced at Alyssa’s name tag and continued. “Alyssa, I was just listening to your voice while you were gathering up your earnings.”
“Oh, well I was just singing for the pleasure of it. I hope it didn’t disturb you sir, I really hope.” Alyssa bit her lip hard.
“Actually, miss…” The man had to look at Alyssa’s name tag once more. “Alyssa, I found your singing quite good.” The dark man reached into his pocket and pulled out a business card. “I work for Big Bucks Records. I would love to have you drop by to our office one day so you can sing for Daddy Big Bucks.” The man handed Alyssa his card and she scanned it over.
“Big Bucks Records!” Alyssa squealed with joy. “You guys are worldwide! I must be very good for you to discover me, mister. But I don’t think I could take a job like this.”
“Well… it is your choice. Thank you; I won’t be needing a burger.” The dark, mysterious man turned away from Alyssa and walked out the large door. Alyssa looked behind her at the clock. 6:30; this meant she could go home.
Alyssa decided to stop by her best friend, Nicole’s house on her ride home. She shifted gears of her tan Jeep, and pulled back from the small parking spot she was in. Stepping on the accelerate as hard as she could, Alyssa sped out of the parking lot and onto the road. Her long, brown, curly hair flew in the wind as she came down the street of Nicole’s house. Alyssa honked the horn of her Jeep just before getting out. She saw Nicole’s mother look out the curtain windows. The curtains swept down again and Alyssa walked up the pebbled trail to the large, white, vintage house. Just as Alyssa raised her hand to knock on the door, Nicole opened the door with a strange look on her face.
“Are you going to pound me or something!” screamed Nicole.
“Gosh no, Nicole. I was coming to tell you something,” Alyssa said. Nicole grabbed Alyssa’s hand and dragged her upstairs to her own room. Nicole slammed the door behind her and plopped herself on her bed.
“Is it a guy?” Nicole asked excitedly.
“No it’s not a guy. Not even close.”
“Then tell me!” Nicole jumped up from her bed and started almost jumping on me.
“Okay, I was at work and this guy walks up to me. He heard me singing and..” Nicole squealed. Nicole was the kind of girl who got excited over a piece of bread. Alyssa gave her a weird look and continued talking. “…and he asked me if I wanted to stop by Big Buck Record’s office and sing for Daddy Big Bucks.” Nicole could see in Alyssa’s eyes that she wasn’t so jazzed about the whole thing. There was some silence. Then a squeal from Bread Girl.
“Well? Aren’t you excited!”
“Not really. I don’t think it’s really fame that I need in my life. You’ve read the magazines, Nic. There’s a lot of pressures of being famous.”
“I guess so. But whatever you choose, I’ll always be your friend.” Alyssa smiled at Nicole as she headed torward the door. She jogged down the stairs, trying not to trip on her new red high-heels she got at Nordstrom.
“Thanks for letting me in, Ms. Hudson!” Alyssa hollered as she ran out the door. She jumped over the car door of her jeep and buckled her body in. It was about 7:00 as Alyssa was leaving Nicole’s house, so she figured she would have to have a quick dinner before hitting the sack. Alyssa got home and walked into the house. She grabbed a piece of pizza and heated it up in the microwave. As it beeped, she reached in and grabbed her pizza. She quickly ate it and then got right into bed. Alyssa was exausted from her
abnormal day.
Chapter Two
“Alright, kiddies. Hop along onto the magical bus of dreams and get ready for an excellent adventure through the rainbow,” said the bus driver, Gus as Alyssa and Nicole jumped on.
“Gus, we’re 16… not 6,” Alyssa explained to him. Gus playfully punched Alyssa on the right shoulder and then said,
“Well then we shall have to start traveling to the Star wars world now, shouldn’t we?”
Nicole smiled at Gus and pushed Alyssa along the bus hallway. When Alyssa found a free seat, she grabbed the collar of Nicole’s polo shirt and dragged her into the seat.
“Whoa. I’m not you’re horse, little girl!” Nicole laughed.
“Whatever. Do you promise that whatever path I choose, it won’t let it affect our friendship?” Alyssa asked.
“I promise,” said Nicole with a promising voice. The best friends pinky promised just as the bus came to a screeching stop. Gus pulled a lever and the doors to the bus opened up with a loud, annoying squeak.
“Okay children. Get off the space craft. May the force be with you,” Gus said sarcastically. He gave a salute and all the kids started laughing.
“I swear I’m going to have to start driving my Jeep to school now. Gus is getting freakier and freakier,” said Alyssa as she rolled her eyes.
“Oh you’ll live.” Nicole and Alyssa smiled at each other, took one another’s hands, and barged through the large double doors of West Side school. Nicole searched in her purse to find that Post-it with her locker number on it. She could never remember it, even though she was opening it eight times a day. She finally grabbed it and copied it so her fingers twisted and turned on the dial lock. Alyssa and Nicole grabbed their books for their first class.
“Okay, I have an appointment after school so I’ll just talk to you later,” said Alyssa as she slammed her locker shut.
“Alright then,” Nicole shouted from down the hall. “I’ll talk to you later!” Alyssa signaled a thumbs up at Nicole and ran off to her first class, English.

Later that evening, Alyssa pulled out the Big Bucks Records’ business card that she had shoved into her dresser drawer last night when she had got off of work. She thought for a minute. Should I really go and sing for Daddy Big Bucks? She thought. What if he turns me down? Oh, I might as well go. She stopped talking to herself and pushed the business card down one of the pockets of her purse.
“Mo-om!” She shouted, running down the stairs. “I’m taking a run out into the city. I’ll be back in about an hour!” Alyssa could see her mom was working out and she couldn’t hear her. She didn’t wait. She just ran out the door with the car keys to her Jeep. She jumped in and raced to Big Bucks Studios. 828 Royal Park Ave. Alyssa read out loud. She stopped in front of a tall, wide building and found a parking spot right in front. She sighed.
“Here goes nothing,” She said. She nervously walked into the building and saw the secretary sitting at a large glass desk.
“Big Bucks Records, please hold,” She said over and over again. She said it one more time and then looked up from the telephone. She greeted Alyssa with a handshake. Alyssa showed her the business card. It had the letters APPROVED DISCOVERY written across the paper. The woman lifted her eyebrows in approval and pointed Alyssa toward Daddy Big Bucks’ office. Alyssa’s sneakers squeaked as she tried to quietly walk to the elevator. She stepped in, pressed the button 9 and looked up at the mirror and the roof of the elevator. She fixed her hair and sat on the railing in the elevator until it dinged. Alyssa breathed a deep breath in and walked out of the elevator.
Chapter Three
Alyssa appeared in a dark hallway. It was a one way path so she carefully took quiet steps toward a large glass window with a wooden door on it. She placed her hand on the handle and slowly turned it so the door went inward so she was able to fit in. She stepped into a small recording studio. Two men were talking; one was sitting in a chair. Alyssa supposed it was Daddy Big Bucks. The other one she slightly recognized from Rush-Hour Burgers. Alyssa cleared her throat; trying to get one of the gentleman’s attention. The man she saw from work looked up from his seat at Alyssa.
“Ah. The girl from the burger store!” said the man. “I didn’t quite introduce myself before. My name’s Ron. Daddy Big Bucks, this is Alyssa, the wonderful girl I discovered while getting my burger.” Daddy Big Bucks turned around in his large leather chair and looked up and down at Alyssa. She smiled so her pearly white teeth showed, but he didn’t look satisfied. Maybe it’s because I’m wearing jeans and a t-shirt. I don’t look my best. She thought.
“Humm,” said Daddy Bucks as he circled Alyssa. “Let’s see how you sing. We’ll take it up from there to see if you’re worth some big bucks!” Alyssa nodded with fear. What if I freeze up and I can’t remember a song?! She thought as she entered a small, wooden, soundproof room. I’m going to fail. I’ll be a laughing stock. I can’t do it! She smacked the voice out of her head and put her headphones on. Ron pressed a button in the control room.
“What song would you like?” Ron asked kindly.
“Are you able to play 4ever?” Alyssa asked, shaking.
“We got all of ‘em! Okay it’s starting.” Ron searched for the CD and put in into the player. Alyssa nodded, opened her mouth to start singing, but nothing came out. She slowly started to sing, louder and louder, with more passion each minute.
“Come baby, we ain’t gonna live forever, lemme show you all the things that we can do.” She sang. She even started dancing a little bit. In the middle of a verse, Daddy Big Bucks turned off the sound. At first, Alyssa didn’t notice and kept on singing. But by listening closer to her headphones, she heard no music. She smiled; embarrassed with her face blushing.
