View Full Version : Single-use items
Neoteny 09-26-2006, 04:37 AM Unless using a single-use item gets you something else (e.g., the pirate treasure keys getting you whatever is in the treasure chests), I see no point to having single-use items.
For example, why would I want to turn into a snowman only once? How would I decide when would be a good time to do that?
Yavn says that his team is disappointed that we don't use magic more often. Well, the reason I don't use much magic is that I have to be wearing the magic pins to use them, and I'd rather wear other pins most of the time.
Even with the increased lanyard size, there's not enough room for all the pins and magic I would want to wear.
I think magic should be usable without wearing it, as long as it's in our inventories. That way the lanyard can be filled with non-magic pins.
(Also, we should be able to drive without wearing our drivers' licenses, as long as we have them in our inventories.)
Cadbury of Redwall 09-26-2006, 04:40 AM So true. Whats the point of a single use item
And an expiration date? these magic must be easy to get..
The reason I dont use magic is because I dont really need to, and Id rather wear other pins..
And theres more pin space! yippe!

I agree with this 100% percent. I mean its true i usually want to wear other pins why? Because let me give you an example i myself dont have 8 magic pins meaning it wont fill the lanyard. Correct? So if i only have about lets say 3 it looks odd because the size is different from a regular pin.. so to me it looks tacky. But however thats not the reason im just saying i think the magic pins should just work when we want to use them without having to wear them on your lanyard. Anyways again its just Eviie's opinion nobody elses :) And please everyone dont start making this thread become Chaos because unfortunaetly many people like to cause that ..
ruminant 09-26-2006, 06:28 AM i think we might end up liking it so we better just wait best not to judge before it happens. i didi that once i said THATS SO TERRIBLE! but it ended up just the opposite :)
SuperBillyHill 09-26-2006, 06:29 AM They could make you cast a certain magic spell as a task for a quest. That would be a reason to have a single use magic. Like a single use inferno or something.. Because you can make casting inferno a task in a quest, but i don't think a lot of people do that or they wouldn't have a lot of peeps able to complete the quest. I think most peeps that make u do a magic in a quest pretty much ask peeps to use a magic that most all vmk players have. That could change if u had a single use magic. Like u could have a task say.. - Buy a single use inferno - (or like a clue that's what you're supposed to buy) and then at some other time in the quest it could have a hint that you're supposed to use that magic.
I don't know?.. Just kinda what I think is all. Because that's the first thing I thought of when I read about the single use magic pins.
Wendot 09-26-2006, 06:37 AM The only use I could think of so far is to get a room popular:
"Watch me use my Turn into Something Magic!! omg" = instant 3 Red Mickeys, just wait for it.
But really, I'm interested to see how this new magic and concept work out in the game. Other than the fact that I haven't even won 10 times on Level 1 of the new Pirates yet.......
technogirl 09-26-2006, 06:51 AM I actually want to know if we have already beat all levels of pirates what do we do? Start over (again for the second time) or what? Mules?
Neoteny 09-26-2006, 06:55 AM Oh, I'm sure Yavn wants us to use mules, yes.
jeremyv 09-26-2006, 06:57 AM I'm sure there is a good reason for creating one-time use magic, but my main concern is that it's made non-tradeable. Imagine all the problems it would cause if you could trade a magic that expires or goes away after one use, especially if the person who wants it isn't made aware at the time.

I'm hoping it will be marked somehow.
silverbullet 09-26-2006, 07:18 AM They would be easy staff prizes... as yavn said.
Neoteny 09-26-2006, 07:22 AM They would be easy staff prizes... as yavn said.
They wouldn't be any prizes I'd be interested in winning.
I want things I can keep, or trade.
Like I said in my original post, unless the single-use item gets you something more permanent when used (or at least credits), I don't see the point of it.
Of course, I haven't seen these things in practice yet. They may be something completely different from what we think.
silverbullet 09-26-2006, 07:26 AM Could possibly be replaced with a random object when it dissapears, and we would never know what we could get.
StitchMad 09-26-2006, 08:00 AM They would be easy staff prizes... as yavn said.
Which then takes ME onto ranting about us people in the UK can't get to the HOST games, but thats another story.
Neoteny, I think it is a little weird that we cant keep what we earn. But lets just see what VMK have in store, they havn't done anything major wrong since last halloween...
PolarFish 09-26-2006, 08:08 AM I think it means evertime you win on level 1/2/3 you get a key, for instance every game i win get's me a key.. ?
Its a possibility, so the magic will be VERY common? depending on how low/high the chances are.
Kaironzet 09-26-2006, 08:38 AM Hmm, I was also questioning myself about these kind of new pins, however, managed to get to one only logic conclusion, but alas, it might be wrong.
I thought that maybe, VMK would start releasing kinds of Magic Pins that are single use, but benefit you in a way or other after having used them. For example, the first thought I had, was Treasure Detector Magic. At first, they said the recharge time would last an hour, then they weren't sure, then again an hour but still they claimed to be uncertain of how long it would take to recharge. I do believe that, maybe, VMK found the way of making Magic Pins like these be rare, get you something and last until you get another copy. If this pin is single use, you would use it, probably find some treasure that will benefit your account, and then the Magic Pin will vanish, and it'll force you to get another to seek for treasure.
Another thought I had, was what Wendot posted, a Magic Pin that, as soon as you use it, your Guest Room pops up to the top of the list with three red mickeys.
Yet another idea I thought of, was the fact of having a random credits generator magic or so, which, when you use it, like a wheel of fortune pops out of the thin air and spins until it hits a certain amount of credits that would be the reward for having used the magic pin.
These are just my two cents, I think it sounded a bit logical.

Right, that's what I mean about the single-use items only being worthwhile if, when you use them, they get you something else.
Still, seems like a wasted effort, when they could just give you the "something else" to begin with and skip a step.

It's not just people in the UK who can't get into staff games. I'm from Canada and while the times are ok for me, within seconds the queue is already full and you still can't get in. I'm hoping VMK will get some common sense soon and see that a very simple solution would be to have more than one host game going on at once (say at least 2 or 3) and/or have it set up so you can only play a host game once every couple of days so everyone can get a chance to at least attempt to win.
I also am unsure about these one-use items. Have to reserve judgment for now.
Tris-Remix 09-26-2006, 01:20 PM I'm sure he just meant new amgic, seriously, I like using my magic and one time and poof! Oh no he didn't. But the reason we cant use magic because of the mystical DC monster that the magic makes.
Jacques 09-26-2006, 01:57 PM I don't use my magic often, because it slows my system down. I currently have all the magic available, save for the Green Car (again, slow system), and I love having it. Most handy is the 5* teleport magic. I use it every time I'm doing a quest. I use it when the occasion calls for it, but don't just walk around throwing fireworks or burying myself in gold.
I'm sure they've given this much thought, and it will turn out ok.
Wendot 09-26-2006, 03:23 PM Why is it assumed that players are bored with the magic because they don't use it all the time?
Many of us are sensitive about using magic around new players who may not have any of their own. We tend to save it for closing time and special occassions.
And yes, it does get tiresome changing back and forth between magic pins and regular pins. I'll be very glad when the bigger lanyard comes out.
I've been wearing magic pins all throughout Tron month. The new arcade cabinets gave me something fun to do with my magic pins ......so I agree, how can they assume that we're bored with magic? For me and people hanging out in my Arcade, the arcade cabinets gave renewed interest to all the basic (Fireworks and Invisibility) and free (Pirate) magics.
Bottom line is, we're limited on magic use as long as we're required to wear them to use them. It takes foooooorever to scroll through and find my Tomorrowland magic pins, because there is only 1 of each.

mrmyth 09-26-2006, 04:16 PM One time use pins are not that attractive to me however - I have talked with younger , magic happy VMK players that use their magic all the time,(you know the ones - reason trade rooms say no magic ).
They love the idea of finding or getting magic and will keep doing whatever it takes to replace it. Maybe not all things created in VMK are meant to be conquered and kept - maybe some are there just to use and have fun.
Wendot 09-26-2006, 04:40 PM What did I miss? How do the arcade cabinets interact with the magic pins?
You sit in the arcade cabinet and use your magic to make the game "work." :) When I wasn't so busy, I had my room open every night and it's a lot of fun to watch imaginative people play Dance Dance Revolution or Super Smash Bros. and they interact with an arcade cabinet that sparkles, glows, or shoots off fireworks. .....it's the same thing the Host does for the Find Hula game.

So it's kind of like when people hide behind Madame Leota and make it look like she's talking?
greenhpper 09-26-2006, 05:48 PM Maybe, just maybe, the reason staff don't see magic being used is due to them telling us not to because it causes slow downs and disconnects. And have you ever seen a staff room not full to the gills? And I rarely ever see any staff out side of their rooms.
I see magic being used on a regular basis around VMK, especially in HM lobby and Pirates lobby as people are waiting for a full game.
Perhaps, it is their way of creating one more thing for us to covet?

I'm not coveting something that's going to disappear the first time I use it.
Unless, like I said, it gets me something else when it's used.
MichelleA 09-26-2006, 09:31 PM If they want us to use more magic why make it single use? Now for sure i am not going to use them even if they expire
Neoteny 09-26-2006, 09:37 PM If they want us to use more magic why make it single use? Now for sure i am not going to use them even if they expire
That would make them even more pointless!
PirateTod 09-26-2006, 09:40 PM ok listen to my theory
I think that what VMK is refering to is those keys that will be used to get things from the chest
Because from what it seems like is everytime you win a POTC game you get a key
And once you use the key (maybe magic) once to open chest it disappears
So you have to keep playing POTC to get more keys
Just my theory
kittenofthenight 09-26-2006, 09:47 PM so will we be able to buy these singl use items
rocknraider 09-26-2006, 10:14 PM Im just thinking the single use things will be a lot different than what we think.
VMK has a lot of imaginative people so they have thought this out and it will probably be good.
Or atlest lets hope so
PaperClip 09-26-2006, 10:48 PM I totally agree! But with the increades amount of pins you are allowed to wear, it will be better.
AlexKZ 09-26-2006, 11:11 PM I think I know why somethig would be single use! Maybe it is for Treasure Detector Magic, c'mon now think about, why would VMK let us keep using and using it to get items? So we work for the magic, and when we use it we get (insert item here) and then it dissappears. That is what i think why some magic will be single use only.
Neoteny 09-26-2006, 11:25 PM Right. As long as we get something else when we use the single-use item, that's fine.
PrincessWall 09-26-2006, 11:38 PM I find that most people dont use magic because they say they will get disconnected. I never get dc'd from using magic or being around people who use magic.
MellyBoBelly 09-27-2006, 12:09 AM I completely and totally agree with this. When i was reading the newsletter, these were my thoughts EXACTLY
Flame Gun 09-27-2006, 12:13 AM Unless using a single-use item gets you something else (e.g., the pirate treasure keys getting you whatever is in the treasure chests), I see no point to having single-use items.

It could be if we wanted to Click it to use it we have to have it on our Lanyard if it's not on our landyard we should be able to just say the magic word

That would be fine with me. I just don't want to have to take up valuable lanyard space with magic pins in order to use the magic. That's why you don't see me use magic often.
