It's alright, not really my thing though. If lots of people enjoy it though, it's cool. I think it's good to be in (for people who like it) because:
It's fun
It's good exercize (sp?)
Cute uniforms... 'nuff said. :D

Anyhow, my vote: :pcpunch:

Depends on which kind of cheering you mean... She is football GO TEAM GO cheerleader (no offense). I used to be a competitive cheerleader, and we practiced at least 8 hours every week =P Its hard... and Ive sprained wrists and ankles, gotten whiplash, and almost broke my ankle before. Its purty hard...

My football go team go cheerleading vote is::Smiley - Harump:

ok half of you really dont understand cheerleadinq so yes let me explain to you what it is.. its pretty much a hobby and yes it is fun and hard but when you finish the competitions and you win you feel very good about yourself. I use to be a cheerleader when i was 7 and i ended cheerleading when i was 10. Why? Because i began getting lots of homework and wasnt able to attend many of my cheerleadinq practice. I loved it and enjoyed it! Really cheerleadinq is somethinq i enjoyed and will look on doinq in the future. I do miss it and have learned many things and although i sprained my ankle about 20 times i still wish i could go back. I did tons of competitions around the state and let me tell you it was fun! I dont like people saying that "There's not point to it, its boring and dumb" have you tried it? Yes? Well then its your opinion. No? Well then try and then you can judge it but without ever walking in someone's shoes you cant say anything about it. And without trying something you cant say anything about it as well. I think i made my point... Goo cheerleaders! :]

Hmm yeahh im a prep. Deffinition of prep: Male/Female who wear clothes such as Hollister,Abercrombie,American Eagle etc. and have a great sense of style (;)) There is nothing wrong with preps... i love being a prep and represent it to the fullest. Now if you mean preppy which is the attitude then that i do not like Deffinition of preppy: Girls who talk like "OMG GUESS WHAT? DANIELLE IS SO MEAN TO ME AND LIKE BOBBY BROKE UP WITH ME YESTERDAY" and many can be snotty and rude. If you mean preppy then yes i dont like preppy people. No offense because many of them are nice just not likely to find them. About the cheerleader part your wrong. The cheerleaders you see in the movies are nothing like the ones you actually know. I mean i havent met a snotty cheerleader yet. Nor have i seen one pick on someone if i were to see them pick on someone i would tell them straight up. I have seen many schools and havent seen any mean cheerleaders yet. Again i made my point :)

please dont generalize about cheerleaders. at many schools u need at least a 3.5 gpa to be a cheerleader and many squads have an average gpa of 3.8 or better. i know this bc at some year end competitions there is an award for squads with the highest gpa. also at a lot of schools cheerleaders are picked for their leadership ability as well as skill level. sideline cheer is tons of fun but its the competitive cheer that i thrive on. it really is a sport. think about it, u need the tumbling ability of a gymnast and enough strenth to lift girls to twist, toss, and hold up, in which ever way the coach wants. try practicing jumps for 30 minutes or more and see how tired u get. try doing some of the jumps cheerleaders do and see how hard it is. you also need the focus of an athlete bc if you're not doing your job someone can get seriously hurt. cheerleading is more than a hobby it's serious stuff and the passion of many guys and girls. cheer is a way of life for competitive cheerleaders, it's a year round sport!

I enjoy it very much. I use to do it as well. It is quite hard when you start mixing dance, gymnastics and acrobats all in one.

If you have seen talk shows or been on one, they have a sign telling the audience when to applause. Well, Cheerleaders do just that. They help the audience to know what is going on, give them something to watch and can make one great half-time show!
Cheerleading on a national level is very hard and NOT to be underestimated. It requires great focus and strength.

I wish you luck all out there who do it! Stay fit and have fun!

Be agrressive!

PS: About the attitudes. Well, some people are snotty and some are not. Some that are snotty cheer and some that are snotty play baseball and so on..(Get the point) You can not generalize a person by an activity.

Go JeannieV! It's true. They get such a bad reputation mostly cause of the movies. Anyways it is very hard. I did national cheerleading at a very young age. I enjoyed it. It was cool cause it was like this Little Stars-3-6 Shining stars 7-10 and so on. It was fun because i felt so good about myself when i would finish the cheer. It's very fun. And IT'S HARD! you have to do dangerous stunts, acrobatics and other challenging things. THe kind i do is just competitions. There are groups such as minis 5-8, juniors ( what i'm in ) 10-like 14 or something and seniors which are high school graduates. :) Fun fun :) Also, sometimes cheerleaders at sports games give the team cofidence and to let them know that they can do it

chorustwo

I am getting to the point of being dude were not JUST jumping around in a belly shirt and doing little cheers and in a mini skirt. It is very hard! why don't you try lifting up girls that could be sticks or could be all muscle. It takes alot of heart to do cheerleading and girl, their not little cheers some are the whole routine (which I personally don't like, heh).

I got a competition in like a month and we don't even have our dance down. which really stinks..
and the other fun but weird part is we have to have a pony tail on top of our heads and curl our hair.. it stinks when you have to go to sleep in it and I have LONG LONG hair... but its worth it!!

that is very not true you shouldnt say things if you dont know and for your information on GMA cheerleading is the countries most compettive SPORTS here that S-P-O-R-T-S just as you may call basketball a sport i call cheerleading a sport what if ppl went saying oh soccer is not a sport what is the point of kicking a ball some ppl wouldnt like that so therefor cheerleading is a sport and should be recgonized as one and the comment you made was not an opinion it was negattive i said no neggative states only full opinions it was sort of rude to those who actually cheerlead which would not be you i am guessing

I can't answer. They could be like the lizzie miguire cheer leaders. I, as a boy, think cheer leading is acually a fun activity, not a sport. As i have these very nice cheer leaders at my school. They are really quiet and get striaght A's. But when they get to the football games, they scream the top of their lungs out and do these crazy stunts. I would rather be on my computer though then watching them.....

I dont see why some people dislike it so much-- Why is it so bad to cheer on your favorite team or people (think about this way!). cheerleading is more than it used to be. Some people think its not a sport, but it is! I bet half of everyone that's posted here has never tried and would NOT be able to do half of the stuff! It's something that I'm actually good at! rofl. Everyone hates cheerleaders because a lot of them think they are better than other people, they need to stop giving cheer leaders a bad name-- :( Kinda getting out of hand..

People like different things. You can do polls on different sports or activities and not everyone is going to love it or hate it. To me cheerleading is good for people who are interested in gymnastics. I can't do gymnastics so that is why i am not doing cheerleading... I don't hate it though. What is there to hate? I sometimes feel sorry for cheerleaders because everyone hates them. I like to watch the cheerleaders at assemblys because it is cool.

Technichally cheerleading is not a sport, competitive cheerleading is, but that's basically it.

Anything classified as a sport has statistics, or stats.

Competitive cheerleading does have stats, wins, losses, titles... but just cheerleading for football or something, there is just nothing...

Bellezza
10-21-2006, 11:45 PM
sports dont nessacarily have to have stats cheerleading is very hard and some ppl should try it themselves to see as well i do recall it as a sport and both ways

I must say, it takes a lot of skill to be a cheerleader. Personally, I've never tried it, but my friend does it. She goes to practice every day of the week - not including weekends. On most weekends she goes to competitions. I could never imagine myself as a cheerleader (as fun as it looks, I just don't think my body bends that way). Being a swimmer, we don't need too much flexibility (except for in our ankles and shoulders - that always helps!), and the only jumps we do are off of the blocks. I guess you could say we do flips (when we do flip-turns), but then again, we're not working against gravity.

I have tried gymnastics before. I had a blast, but being the way I am, I was too scared to do most of the tricks (although I can do a cartwheel and a round-off).

As for cheerleading being a sport, I would definately say it is. We consider dance and gymnastics as sports, why not cheerleading? (I've always thought of cheerleading as being a mix of the two)

Just my :twocents:.

People think it's not a sport because all we do is wave pom poms, wear belly shirts and short skirts, yell loud, and be perky. I say different. Cheerleading is unique. And maybe I am what you think I am but cowgirl is right there's blood sweat and tears. Why don't you try it. If you do it then tell me if it's a sport or not. Do it wrong and then tell me.

I am addicted to volleyball. I play on a normal team, a select team, and our select team we've been ranked 4th in the region for our age group. Our team takes volleyball really serious. If we need to work on spiking, we practice spiking. Serving? We practice serving. Every Thursday we have to go to training. This is where we lift weights, run, and stretch for a straight hour. If we didn't do that, we would most likely not be as good, because in training, it helps us get stronger, and that means stronger, spkies, serves, and possibly passes.

Cheerleading is the most pointless thing in the world. There again, I was never really a fan of the so called "girly" stuff. [Pink doesn't matter. It's just a color. -.-] Cheerleading seems a tad bit girly in my opinion. Normally, they are just people who jump around and supposively get the team's spirits up. I disagree. It's the crowd cheering. It's the screaming you here when you get a point. It's the fans who make you want to keep on going, not the cheerleaders. Basicly there is no need for them. Their jobs don't work. -.-

So, in conclusion, my smily would be...

There is also competition cheer. It's a lot more exciting. Have you ever seen it on ESPN? If you watch competition cheer you would see that it's more than a girly thing, but really a sport. With all the tumbling and stunting, I don't think how anyone can say it's just a girly thing :)

In addition, at football and basketball games, I hear a lot of the fans saying the cheers along with the cheerleaders ;)

I've never cheered before, but I think of it in not a stereotypical way. I love seeing their moves that cheerleaders make. You have to have a lot of stamina to do that, you know?

I really hate it how it's stereotyped in the media and elsewhere. It's a sport, not something "girly girls" do. Furthermore, not every one of them is snobby and stuck-up. Seriously. Not to mention how much it bugs me when people say, "cheerleaders scare me".

Just my two cents.

That is very wrong is so many ways. Now you say its your opinion but you've turned it very rude. I mean have you ever cheerleaded before? So you cant say its the crowd that should be needed. I find it SO RUDE you say cheerleaders arent needed! YOU DONT KNOW HOW HARD SQUADS WORK TO CHEER THE TEAM ON!!! I find that post shocking in how you think you say these things without even knowing them at all!

Chaelle
01-13-2007, 05:25 AM
I like the cheerleading on TV. I've never thought about cheerleading myself when I was younger. I admire the ones who spend countless hours practicing- and finally succeed.

For those of you who do not prefer the sport, cheerleading, who say, "That's girly and it's pointless and stupid." I have my own opinion to say.
Cheerleading first started at Princeton University in the 1880s with the crowd chant, "Rah rah rah, tiger tiger tiger, sis sis sis, boom boom boom ahhhhhhh, Princeton Princeton Princeton!!" as a way to encourage school spirit at football games. A few years later, Princeton graduate Thomas Peebles introduced the idea of organized crowd chanting to the University of Minnesota in 1894, but it was not until 1898 that University of Minnesota student Johnny Campbell stood in front of the crowd, and directed them in a chant, making Campbell the very first cheerleader. Soon after that, the University of Minnesota organized a "yell leader" squad of 6 male students. Although it is estimated that 97% of today's cheerleading participants are female, cheerleading started out as an all-male activity.
Too bad people have stereo-typed cheerleading so much.
According to latest studies, there are nearly 3.5 million cheerleaders in the USA alone, and half as many dance team members and gymnasts, taking the total number of participants involved in cheerleading and allied activities in the USA to above 5 million. There are also tens of thousands of cheerleaders in Europe, Central America, Australia, and Asia.

Pointless, or with point? You decide.

Noteable Celebrities who used to Cheerlead:
Paula Abdul, Los Angeles Lakers, Van Nuys High School
Christina Aguilera, Klaudija Alasauskaite, Kirstie Alley, Ann-Margret, John Curly Barrett, Toni Basil, Kim Basinger, Halle Berry, Sandra Bullock, Ellen Burstyn, George W. Bush, Phillips Academy.
And many, many more! Look for the full list Here! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cheerleaders)

In my words
So I don't know alot about cheerleading, I have never played nor practiced a day in my life. But what I do know is that it is a sport, just like soccer, basketball volleyball, baseball, and many others that involve a team. Cheerleading is made up of a team, the cheerers need everyone. Cheerleading is just another sport. Everyone prefers a different sport that they like to be a part in, no one is the same.
Once again, I'm not a cheerleader, nor are you aloud to say that I am a cheerleading freak
I am just stating the facts.

:ola_2: Cheerleading is a sport that you either like it or you don't. It is a fun sport and I encourage everyone to try it, along with any sport! You never know, it could be your calling! I have mixed feelings about the sport, I use to be a cheerleader and it is a fun thing to do, but as in an opposing view it can be dangerous. Most people consider cheerleaders to be a bit of a snob, but it is not true. Overall, people should follow their dreams and hold their beliefs!
