Hello and welcome to a step by step guide to logging into #vmkforums on IRC :)

One way is using the Live Chat feature of VMKForums and here is an alternative for those who might be interested.

Introduction

IRC is an acronym for Internet Relay Chat.

#vmkforums is a channel on GameSurge (irc.gamesurge.net)

By visiting http://www.gamesurge.net/ (http://www.gamesurge.net/) you can create an account to identify you on their chat server. The registration will take you through the process of authenticating once you're connected to their IRC server. ** Do not login with your Disney account information**

You will require an IRC client in order to access the channels outside of being on VMKForums. mIRC (http://www.mirc.com) is a great program to help you get started.

Logging in to #vmkforums via mIRC

Download and install mIRC http://www.mirc.com/get.html (http://www.mirc.com/get.html)

After installing mIRC, fill in the required values in the options. Name, email and nickname. It's recommended due to the nature of IRC that you don't fill in your personal information here.

From the prompt type: /server irc.gamesurge.net

You will notice the connection will start and go through the login process, displaying the message of the day (MOTD) and your connection info.

Authenticate with GameSurge: /authserv AUTH (nickname) (password)
For further authentication help with GameSurge, check out their New User FAQ (http://www.gamesurge.net/newuser/).

Join the chat: /join #vmkforums

The window is split into a three different areas by default. The far right panel lists the current users connected to the channel. On the left, the biggest window, displays the chat, and the bottom box is where you enter in anything you'd like to say.

Users with an @ infront of their name are channel OPs who ensure everyone is having a good time and following the rules just as the admins on here. Users with a + infront of their name have "voice" meaning they're able to continue in the discussion should the channel become moderated.

Some helpful commands

1) There is a channel bot named Keswick. You may pass a couple commands to it for fun.

!stat - Shows your logged stats, ie characters typed, time spent
!place - Where you're at compared to other user's stats
!seen - Displays when a certain user was last seen ie: seen (user)

!quote - Displays a quote someone once said, addes to Keswick's database.*
!top (10, 20, etc..) - Displays the top w/e users according to words spoken.* Thanks Schmoofy!

2) During chat you may say: "/me (action)" which will display you making an action for emphasis.

3) When signing out try: "/quit (goodbye comment)" which will display a little message to everyone as you logoff.

**Please remember to keep the chat G rated just as you do here or the Mods will ban you from Live Chat!

Awesome guide! I had no idea what the @ and + meant.
I have a question, while in chat sometimes I right click the people's names and I get a tab thingy. I don't know what it means

This is an awesome guide! I've been trying to connect to #vmkforums on mIRC forever, but I never connected to gamersurge first. I always just typed /join #vmkforums lol.

I just bookmarked this page so I can look back at what to type.
