View Full Version : Proposed Furniture Reorganization
prisoner 08-09-2006, 12:49 PM I want to open this debate here, rather than in the Talk:Furnishings page, because I'd like to hear comments from many people, and the notification system here is better.
Right now, the Furnishings page (http://www.disneysonlineworlds.com/index.php/Furnishings) is a stub, and we have no particular focus on it. Meanwhile, several of the furniture guides are on the various store pages (for example, see whats on the Emporium (http://www.disneysonlineworlds.com/index.php/Emporium) page.
I would like to move all the items to the Furnishings page, possibly organizing them similar to jeremyv's excellent userpage (http://www.vmkforums.com/forums/userpage.php?do=main&userid=14049) (want to join us, jeremy? :)), including prices, how acquired, and any additional information we may get from the newsletters. Basically all the stuff we have been doing for the pin sets and costumes.
The stores may contain a link to some of these items, but I don't see much need for them to be here. Perhaps mention themes of what is in the stores and provide links to the furnishings, pins, posters, and costumes pages as appropriate.
So - any thoughts?
MichelleA 08-09-2006, 06:07 PM Have you PMed jeremyv?
anyways i would like to help if we get the pictures
partyatvmk 08-10-2006, 03:42 PM I made a list of all the furniture. How do I put it on the Wiki.
SpinMarty 08-13-2006, 07:07 AM It would seem logical that my Furniture/Accessories list (currently being updated) is the most complete list (except for a few things the last couple of months still to be added) and therefore could be used on the wiki. I was just trying to sign up in order to contribute.
Thoughts?

Great! would love to see your contributions.
I think your list was the one that the current division (by store) was based on, since it seemed to use the coding method that you were using. I had forgotten to check who the original authors were, however.
SpinMarty 08-13-2006, 06:38 PM OK, I redid the "Shops" pages including the photos that were already there. Let me know if that is an appropriate set-up. If that is acceptable then I will continue and add each of the photos as I find them. Also, it is very possible to put a link into each other category (ie: pins) to link to the pins section.
Also, I reorganized the Shop listings on the TOC page to coincide with the order that you would encounter them in VMK around the map (as I did in my F&A list here in the forums.) What I need done, however, is to edit the titles of the Shops without having to create a new page. How does one do that?
Another solution the the Furnishings page is to provide a link to each of the shops.

What I usually do when faced with something like this is to move the page. I do the following:
Go to the page in question. (For example: Shrunken Ned's (http://www.disneysonlineworlds.com/index.php/Shrunken_Ned%27s))
On the left hand side towards the bottom, you'll see a box labeled "toolbox" and a link labeled What links here (http://www.disneysonlineworlds.com/index.php/Special:Whatlinkshere/Shrunken_Ned%27s). I open this in another window.
Back on the original page, I click on the move (http://www.disneysonlineworlds.com/index.php/Special:Movepage/Shrunken_Ned%27s) tab, and move it to the new name.
I then click on each of the pages listed in "What links here" and adjust their name as appropriate.
If there are cases where I think the name of the page is fine, but want to change the link, you can do something like
[[Page To Link To|What link will show]]

Well, I have two thoughts on this, but I'm very much open to suggestions. (And since you have the drive to do this at the moment, it isn't like I'm going to stop you from doing it however you want. :) )
First:
I'm still not convinced the items should be listed on the individual store pages. It just seems backwards to how we think about them. We don't think "I'm in Ned's, what can I get" we think "I need a treasure chest, where do I go to get it." So I think a list of items (possibly broken down by category) on the furniture (and pins and posters) page, with links to the stores, would be the better way to go.
Second:
The formatting of the entries themselves. We haven't come up with a consistent style yet, although the "Pin Sets" section has the most information besides the furniture ones, and its style seems fairly good. Some days I lean towards using tables, so we can provide extra information eventually (is the furniture item stackable? can you sit on it? what are its dimensions? plus the wealth of information we have about price and availability.) I know I did tables on some other page, but I can't remember which one anymore.
jeremyv 08-13-2006, 07:25 PM Spin, you're more than welcome to use the images I've collected to help with the Wiki and your Archive efforts as well. Since I didn't join until a little bit after Christmas, I would have to research how some of the retired/rare items were obtained at the time of their release. I have taken the time to understand the item history, but I can't say for certain where each and everyone came from ;)
Priz, I'm more than willing to help out with the Wiki. Please feel free to utilize any of the images in my archive to help, and we can go from there. I do have a Wiki account, but I'm unsure about how to add/edit another Wiki.
SpinMarty 08-13-2006, 09:22 PM Suggestion,
I can move all the furniture to the inventory section. Priz, please create another section called "Posters" and I will tansfer all those items as well.
Also, please check out the "VMK History" page as I am reformatting it to clean it up. I have several changes depending on the month. Tell me which you think is best. I like the "August 2006" format the best.
JeremyV, thanks for the offer. It will come in handy!
SpinMarty 08-13-2006, 11:24 PM Darnit! After two hours of changing the timeline page I hit the wrong button to save and it saved an older version! GRRRRR
(Yes, I am aware of this dbl post)

Check out the table in the "Posters" section (yes, I went ahead and created it) and see what you think. I am just playing around to see how to do it. I tried it with both Header sections as well as a full list (well, not complete list yet, but you get the idea)

I mostly liked the format, which I see you applied to the rest of the sections as well. Definately makes it easier to read!
I've made a small change to the August section to make it a little more compact - namely, if there was just one thing released, it put it on the same like as the "Released". If there were multiple items, I put each (or each logical group) on their own bulleted item. I think this makes it even a little nicer to read - what do you think?
I also removed future months. We have enough trouble with people predicting future events. :)

Looks like you went back, fixed them, and realized you can do it section by section to save yourself heartache. :)

I think the table definately works! Three thoughts on the layout
Perhaps combine "cost" and "location" into a "how to get" column. There is plenty of space, especially with these pictures.
We have been putting the picture first, but your way does make some sense (makes it easier to find the description while scanning the list, but is this how people will scan the list?)
I think we should adopt this for all the inventory items. I think some will need additional columns (the furniture I think could use a "stackable" and a "chair" column, for example), but the table definately looks like the right way to go.
Great work! Very glad you've joined us on the Wiki!
