View Full Version : Should the U.S go without pennies? (Read thread!!)

FireworksMonkey

On a news site there was an article saying that the U.S Mint was thinking about getting rid of pennies because the cost to make a penny will be more expensive than the value of the coin. The penny is made of copper, nickel, and zinc. Do you really think the U.S should go without pennies? That would be weird! Just imagine life without pennies. They also were thinking about increasing the amount of $2.00 bills.

never!! pennies can make a persons life!!! - atleast mine -

AwesomeCute
07-18-2006, 02:12 AM
That would be weird... It would be difficult to pay for tax on small items and stuff. A lot of prices would have to go up or down. It would be something hard to do.

jeremyv

They were thinking the same idea here, to eliminate pennies and introduce a $5 coin. The major problem is tax! Do you realize what it would take to adjust all of the prices on everything to ensure it was always rounded to the nearest nickle? When tax is applied to items, most of the time the result involves a penny. So if they were to eliminate pennies, they would have to eliminate taxes or find some magic tax % that would ensure the applied values are always multiples of 5.

------
EDIT:

Recently one of our taxes was dropped 1% and guess what it did?
Created more pennies as change. A coffee went from $1.40 to $1.39 for example. :)

I wish they could keep the penny, but also add a $5 coin!

So you pick up dirty rocks and used bubblegum? Lets say you find 3 pennies a day during a walk. In a month you'd have $1. It's not much, but a $1 more than you would have if you didn't bother.

They're not worth less they are worth 1 cent ! I mean how would we make change. Like people have been saying you would never get exact change. If you don't like your pennys take them to a coin machine at your bank, turn you recipt to the teller and get bills.

I think pennies should stay just because of the fact that they are here. If they take the penny away is the government then going to want to eventually, like 50 or 100 years down the road, take the nickel, dime, quarter, etc. away too? What would their qualifications be to take it away, and what would the affect on the monetary system as a whole be?

I was just thinking that the last coin that the government decided to change didn't last very long. The golden dollar coin was a big thing when it was released but now it is not. I haven't even seen one in I don't even know how long.

As far as the price of a penny being less than it costs to mint one well why doesn't the government change the worth of it. It happens all the time. The value of the American dollar is constantly changing in relation to the rest of the world's currency. Just adjust the values of the coins. (I know that it is probably a lot harder to do than what I say, but that is still what I think about it)

My opinion is if it isn't broken don't fix it. The penny works fine right now, so don't mess with it.

If a total came out to something like that they would either:

A. Riase it up to 1.00 exactly
B. Lower it to 95 cents so you can pay with 3 quarters and 2 dimes or any other combination.

Anyway KEEP THE PENNIES!!!

If a total came out to something like that they would either:

A. Riase it or lower it to on the dollar exactly
B. Or they would raise it so you would pay in nickles or Dimes or Quaters.

ok we need to keep it for this reason

think about it with taxes with out the penny we would have to lower
buying taxes or store prices if we lower taxes that means less money going to "the man" if we lower store prices that means less money going to stores so think about it is it really a good idea?

Galaxee
07-18-2006, 07:07 PM
We should definately keep the pennies. Our whole society is dependant on them! LOL. Why, you ask?

Well, you may have seen Andy Rooney (on 60 minutes) a long time ago talk about an ad he saw once. It was titled "Great Gifts for Under $300". All the items listed on the ad were $299.99.

For some silly reason, stores want to price items strangely. For example, if I went in to buy say a video game, instead of costing $50 dollars per say, it would cost instead $49.99. This is so it "looks" cheaper, with the store not losing much money. In the long run, for every 100 items sold, they lose a dollar. They probably think this is worth the cost. Likewise, for every 100 items we buy, we earn a dollar.

What I am trying to say here is that either we should either round up the amount that items cost (so that the video game would be $50 instead of $49.99, for example), keep the penny (this one has my vote), or make everything 4 cents less (for example, the video game would be $49.95 (so that we get a nickle back) instead of $49.99 or $50). But if the stores do do this, then for every 20 items sold, they lose a dollar. It would be much cheaper for everyone if they kept the penny.

FYI, this is coming from a person who grew up without a sales tax, so it is probably much worse for people who do have sales tax.

The ironic thing is, I think there used to be a "half-penny", and they abolished this long ago. I don't know if this is true or not, I'll have to check.

We have more pennies than we realize. I recently sorted all the coins in a bank that I have had since I was very small (with the help of a coin sorter, unfortunatly, it died at the end). I found about $20 worth of quarters, many dimes and nickels, and 14 pounds of pennies. Besides, it would probably be very hard to get rid of because there is so many.

Heh, lucky me, you know how you find pennies on the street? I don't find many pennies, for some reason I find lots of dimes :@@:

i think they should make a 2dollar american coin and more 1dollar american coins..kinda like how euros work..
I belive there are plenty of dollar coins in the US. I have one I carry around everywhere that I call Susan (because she's a Susan B. Anthony dollar). I also was digging around the house and found about 5 pounds of Sacagowea (sp?) dollars. I thought it was a quarter on the ground, but I picked it up, and there was Susan.

Excuse the pun, but here's my :twocents:.

No need for any cash really. Go to all virtual money since the value of a US "dollar" is a concept and not backed by any hard currency any more...

I don't agree with that at all. Sure virtual cash (debit/credit bank transfer) is nice but think of the implications if the system were entirely virtual. First, more computer fraud and digital crimes which can't be traced as easily as money. Next, the implantation of microchips (the future of debit) would grow rapidly beyond many countries basically further starving the 3rd World and turning the 2nd World to poverty if they couldn't keep up. Banks then only exist to house jewels, precious metals, deeds and safe-deposit boxes. Then, with one huge cyber crime, the entire economy vanishes into one person's bank account. Sounds like a smart idea doesn't it? :(

Right now the value of the dollar still depends on the amount of gold a country has. This amount is never disclosed to the public and any given country can only print as much money as gold they have. The deficits and over-spending are mainly due to loans from other countries and private investors, not from printing money.

Pennies will stay until a mathematics professor discovers a magical formula to make every transaction end in a nickle.

Ok sure...pennies can get really annoying cause we all have ALOT. But that's no reason to get rid of them. Why get rid of something that has been with us so long, we have gotten accoustumed (sp??) to it. Anyway we would have to round the cost of things. And that would stink. Just imagine how annoying it would be. Especially cause some things will come out to: 5.01 or 19.99. Why give more money than needed? Pennies should stay!!

it's called exact change. The reason while old ppl take song long in the grocery check out line. I think they sould so they can reasonably price based on quarenty of the thing. Such as one product being priced a couple of cents less because less stuff in it other than the other product being priced full price because it's whole. And it makes sales tax cheaper
