View Full Version : 10,000 Steps a Day
jeremyv 07-14-2006, 03:33 AM Something to think about:
One of the best ways to feel good physically is to ensure you take at least 10,000 steps every day on top of your normal routines. Combined with healthy meals (especially fruits, veggies) and at least 8 glasses of water a day, you will feel great and be able to focus on things more clearly.
I have been excersing on a daily basis for the last 10 years and the more I do, the better I feel. It took quite a while to build up to the level I'm at.
Facts:
- 1½ hours of walking a day equals about 10,000 steps.
- You will burn about 500 calories a day this way
- Equivalent to 5 miles of walking depending on your stride
- Start with a small amount, like 500-1000 steps a day and build up
- It takes 6 months to get used to a routine behavior
- More than 12,500 steps is considered highly active
- Equal to about 30 minutes of intensive physical workout
If you don't already have a pedometer to keep track of how many steps you take, you can buy one for about $1 at most dollar stores.
Please keep in mind this is outside of normal daily activities.
iliketodancelikewhoa 07-14-2006, 03:38 AM i will certainly start doing 10000 steps a day
xDORKSTERR 07-14-2006, 03:41 AM i did that before!
i was fun :)
but kinda difficult walking&& running everywhere...
Melysah 07-14-2006, 04:49 AM Oh, I just remember something. If you want to walk more and you have a dog, go on a walk in the morning (anywhere from 6 am to 8 am). That way both you and your dog gets exercise. And if you walk after dinner then you don't feel as full. Just be sure you never run after you've just eaten a meal. Just take a walk around the block. :) You can also walk your pets to a local park and just chill there for a while. Then walk home. (That's best if you don't live more than 3 or 4 miles from a park.)
Waterelement 07-14-2006, 04:51 AM Here is something to think about: If you're in middle school, you know you're getting 10,00 steps a day xD
InfernoWanter 07-14-2006, 04:58 AM I get about 8500, i walk alot :P
GoofyGeggy 07-14-2006, 05:00 AM Well, my vmk character takes at least 10K steps a day (more on host quest days). I'm not sure what they eat, other than chimichangas, turkey legs and churros, and the lovely frozen lemonaide for dessert. I bet all of that helps their overall health!
As for mine...
Fantasysurfingboy 07-14-2006, 05:14 AM I get in about 8,000 or 9,000

The 10,000 steps is for outside of normal daily activity. No matter what you do during a day, your body needs extra physical activity to stay healthy. It's been suggested to workout 30 minutes a day at least 3 times a week, and this idea is very similar to that except you do it every day.

Sports practice would be similar, depending on how long you practice for, to taking 10,000 steps.

sakusan 07-14-2006, 06:08 AM LOL geggy, anyway I get alot of walking everyday. I don't know how many steps but I walk :)
As for my food.. uh well i do eat veggies and fruits.
The water thing isn't gonna happen for me since my bio teacher told me that I can drown myself from the inside from drinking too much water.
frostingonthecake 07-14-2006, 06:10 AM lol i hate water. i will not drink water most peole love it but it has no taste so that's why i hate it. theres a little thing called propel and gatorade. those are just nifty :D
sakusan 07-14-2006, 06:13 AM Gatorade is a sports drink, which means you should ONLY drink it 30 minutes before a sporting event, otherwise it's bad for your health.
Cindrbellas 07-14-2006, 06:14 AM all Geggy and I drink is water :) We're from the southwest so we'd die without it :) haha. I like mac n cheese

The human body is 70% water and needs the right amount of water to function properly. The only way you would drown yourself from drinking too much water is if you inhaled it into your lungs. :/
Any excess will be taken care of by normal bodily functions. You would have a VERY full stomach before you'd even come close to drowning from it.
Cindrbellas 07-14-2006, 06:17 AM ew I don't like that phrase, "bodily functions" Anyway, I eat mac n cheese with ketchup O_o
I don't like gatorade.. maybe some flavors, but water is good for your skin :) And keeps you thin :)
(PS. I just had the most difficult time trying to spell ketchup)
trick_master 07-14-2006, 06:17 AM wow to much science for me but i do get about 10,000 steps i go to practice everyday. 1 question can bike riding be considered taking steps?
Middiebear 07-14-2006, 06:17 AM The water thing isn't gonna happen for me since my bio teacher told me that I can drown myself from the inside from drinking too much water.
I've heard it is possible to die from drinking too much water...
(We're talking 10 gallons a day...)
sakusan 07-14-2006, 06:19 AM Yea I understand that the body is made of 70% of water but I still only drink water when I'm thirsty.
Melysah 07-14-2006, 06:19 AM all Geggy and I drink is water :) We're from the southwest so we'd die without it :) haha. I like mac n cheese
True, true. I've got band camp in August. e.e Water is my <3. We are outside from 8 am to 1 pm for like 9 days practicing. That's usually the hottest part of the day, it gets anywhere from 100 to 120 (degrees F). -nods- I drink so much water because I'm doing a lot of physical work in the heat.
Heh, I like Mac 'n Cheese too.
Cindrbellas 07-14-2006, 06:21 AM yay for mac n cheese!! :)
Drinking the right amount of water a day is good :) Especially when you're busy. (like band camp, oh how i don't miss those days..)
Walking rocks too :)
Unless you do 2 or more straight days of walking at DLR, ouch.
frostingonthecake 07-14-2006, 06:22 AM I'm from the southwest too but i still hate water LOL i only drink water when
A.NOthing else to drink
B.Sports
C. If i'm ever in jail and all i get is bread and water LOL
D.We are out of milk
E.I'm stranded in the deseret (sp?) and all i have is water for me to survive on
I'm a huge milk drinker. i can't survive without milk.
haha like i said i spell like a rock so don't laugh at me.
I laugh at myself thank you.

Yes it can. You would need to figure out how long it takes you to burn 500 calories riding a bike, which is about the same as taking 10,000 steps.
On average, the same amount of calories would be burned by going 12-14mph for an hour, depending on your body weight. Bike riding does use different muscles, so it would be good to alternate between the two if you're concerned about even toning.

yea... bc at my school you have to run a half on mile a day (and on Wednesdays a mile) plus gym or P.E. you definetly get that many steps in...trust me...

Ok I just searched the effects of drinking too much water.
Apparently you can suffer from water intoxication which can swell up brain cells causing coma or ultimately death. Water intoxication, however, is more common in athletes and babies/infants. You really should only drink 8-12 ounces a day because most of your fluids come from your food. It really doesn't depend on how much you drink but how fast you drink water. Even though the kidney of an adult can filter 15 liters of fluids, your kidney can not take in a large volume of water in a certain time. It is very uncommon for anyone else besides and athlete or a baby/infant to get this. Like they said it depends on how fast you drink your water. There have been cases of death like the college death. As a faternity had an initiation for a fellow college student they forced him to drink lots of water and he died from heart failure. I know there are other ones but I'm not gonna get into that.

You actually can Die from drinking too much water and it isn't caused by inhaling it into your lungs. I'm not going to go into the Biology of it but if you have questions you can sent me a Pm and I will do my best to explain it to you.

Thanks for this info. In our school, they gave us free pedometers because it was sponsored by Coca-Cola. I recently stopped using the pedometer, but now I'm going to start using it again. :) By the way, if you go to DLR or WDW, you get to walk a lot around the park to I usually get around 8,000 steps just doing that. LOL

The person was talking about drowning, which means enough fluid in the lungs/air system preventing proper breathing causing suffocation, not water intoxication as stated above and there is a difference. If you drink too much water too fast AND have a severe sodium depletion, you could suffer from hyponatremia, not drowning.

Yes sorry that was my bad. My teacher was wrong about the drowning thing but he was right about being able to die from too much water and too little salt.
StitchMad 07-14-2006, 07:36 AM I walk about 10,000 steps on VMK and drink about 8 glasses of water through the water coolers.
Does that count?

Oh ok. You didn't mention the other part at all. ;)
