Hey everyone. I have seen some people ask how would someone wear the mermaid costume since there are no feet. I have a solution to that. A magic pin called Aqua pin! When you use it you turn into a mermaid and float around as if you were swimming for a bit. I am still comming up with a boy mermiad look, but here is the prototype magic pin. I used teleport magic as a base and painted a new background and added the mermiad costume:

Yeah I did not notice either! While I was making it I was like "I gotta make the hair" then I forgot. After making it I was like "There is something missing!" and I could not figure out what! i use paint...and not bragging but its pretty good lol wel for paint... you can blend and do cool colors though... im not a real clothes designer so i need my bffs drawings to do outfits off of..your way better than ill ever be...

Well before I start coloring my costume I outline and draw everything with size 1 brush and I use a darker color than what the actual garment is going to be, so that is one of the first things I outline. I usually use layers so I just use the bucket tool and get the coloring done quick, and I don't risk coloring over some of the outlines.

That's a good idea. I'll start designing and sketching a dumbo hat. Also snow white dress is also a nice idea. I conisered doing that a long time ago. And perhaps an Aurora, Belle, and Cinderalla dress and hair as well?

Tutorial as requested:

You need: Photoshop or an advanced graphic making program
(Gimp or Paint Shop Pro will do) and a Graphics Tablet

First open your vmk character picture.

Then make a new transparent layer above the main layer. Use the main base color for the hair, the main color your want to use for the hair and set the paint brush size to 1 or 2 px (1 px preferred). On the new layer start stroking from the part (or where you want the part to be) down the hair. To get a nice hair strand start off the stoke a little harder and as you go down make it lighter and lighter.
Make sure to keep the strokes long and quick. Keep doing this until your hair looks something like this.

As you can see I added some darker strands to make it look a little more realistic. You may do the same.

It looks good but as you can see, you can still kind of see the bottom of the original vmk hair. This is fixable. Select the smudge brush and set the opacity to 95. Set the brush size to 1 px and on the bottom layer where your vmk character is on stroke downward to make more strands to blend in with the strands on the top layer.

Tips: Hair is naturally different colors and shades. Do not just use one color, but 2-3 different (lighter and darker) shades of the base color. Also look at some pictures of hair. Hairs cluster and clump together as well as spread apart. Try to make some strands cluster together to make it look more realistic.

Thanks :D I'm glad you like my work. I just wish VMK liked my work enough to think about using some of my ideas. Although I did make an Alice in wonderland costume back in 2005 and sent it in, and there is an Alice in wonderland costume now (I doubt it was because of my submission)

And they can't just take yours and release it in VMK, because they have to make a back and both sides to the costume. Thank you :D That is true they would have to do that, and animate what it would look like when the person walks. I don't think if they used my idea they would use the exact graphic but make their own. But idk if they are any good at making denim though XD The jeans in vmk look very cartoony and my edits look more realistic (I focus on details) Maybe someday I will make my own game. We'll see. I'm no good at flash and action script.

Edit: I made a 3-D triangle (pyramid) and a cube (sqareish). Then I made a circle (ball). The shadows are very silly. I'll PM them to you or post em' here later.

Hey I've not been making costumes lately, but I felt the need to make a new Teyla costume. If you have ever watched the show, Stargate Atlantis, you should know that she is an awesome character and is very pretty so that is why I felt the need. My old Teyla costume is outdated, she has new outfits, and I wanted to make a new one with my new techniques I have developed over the year and some months that I have been making costumes.

I made her barefoot because I was having trouble with her shoes (military boot/tennishoe style shoes.)
I may remake the other Stargate Atlantis/SG-1 characters and make the ones I have not made yet. It depends.

Here are some tips:
Use lots of layers. Everything should be on a different layer. Especially the coloring and outlines. Those should always be separate. The coloring should be below their lineart/outline layer. If you know how to shade, use a darker color of the base color for the right side and a lighter color for the left side (based on the lighting of the vmk characters and their clothes) You always want to use more than one shade. So that means on the darker side start out with the darkest shade and as the shading moves to the left it gets lighter and eventually blends in with the base color. Same with the left side but it gets darker then blends in with the base color. Then use blur/soften tool to smooth it out. The cheating way to shade is using light/darken tool. I think in PSP9 when you use that tool the lighten darken are either left or right click (in photoshop lighten/darken tool are separate tools) Turn the opacity down and use a small brush, maybe size 5, for the shading. I usually save lighten/darken (for my program it is burn/dodge) for detail and making textures in the fabric (size 1 brush) and I don't blur it, but you could use that tool for both shading and detailing, just use different opacities and brush sizes.
A tip for making outlines. For most things use the darkest shade of the base color of the piece of clothing you are drawing, but for really dark clothes just use black. You want to use size 1 brush in photoshop but probably size 2 in PSP9 because size 1 in PSP9 looks like pencil tool (not smooth at all) Also if you are any good with using a graphics tablet and you have one, I would use that for the outline.
