View Full Version : I may be a WDW Cast Member by mid-August!
Taryn 04-17-2006, 03:11 AM So yeah, hey everyone, I've been gone for aaaaages and ages- School, work...bleh, you know how it goes. Anyways, I just wanted to announce that I put in my application for the WDW CareerStart program a couple of weeks ago, had my phone interview on Wednesday, and will know within two weeks whether I got it or not! Basically, it's the College Program minus the college bit, and I can't WAIT! Wish me luck! :D

Taryn 04-17-2006, 04:12 AM That's fantastic, Taryn! Is this something different from the normal castmember hiring process? I've never heard of it. (Three members of my family have worked at Disneyland at various times.)
By the way, I like the new title you chose for your character. :)
Yes, it is different. The CareerStart program is for recent high school grads (You have to have graduated within 18 months before your arrival date, I believe). If you get accepted, you live in dorms about 2 miles from the resort that are owned by Disney, and are exclusively for CareerStart, College Program, and International Cast Members. To apply, You have to either go to a presentation about the program, or watch an online presentation (there were none scheduled in my State, or neighboring states, so I opted for the online presentation). Then you fax them your application, they call you and set up a phone interview, and you get a letter 2-3 weeks later, telling you if you got accepted, your arrival date, and what the general catagory of the job you're getting is. You've probably never heard of it because it is exclusive to Walt Disney World.
And thanks :) It's my ultimate goal in life to be a Jungle Cruise skipper (as I told my interviewer), so I thought it was fitting!
Gl, but where do you want to work, MGM, MK, Epcot, blizzard beach, typhoon lagoon, or AK?
I'm not sure. With the CareerStart Program (and College Program), instead of getting to choose where you work, you say which types of jobs you are willing to do (Operations, which include rides and parking lot attendants; Quick Service Food and Beverage, which would be working any fast food/food stand; Table Service Food and Beverage, which are sit down places; Custodial, which could include sweeping around the parks, taking out trash, cleaning restrooms, answering hordes of guests questions, etc; Merchandise, which would be working in any sort of shop; Costuming, which is a completely off-stage job, where you give other Cast Members there costumes; and Lifeguarding, which is prety self explanetory). Anyways, they'll put you where you're most needed/where you're most qualified to work...I'm holding out for a ride like Jungle Cruise, The Great Movie Ride, or any sort of ride where YOU are part of the attraction...but at the same time, I'd be happy cleaning bathrooms, just to be working for Wlat Disney World!
technogirl 04-17-2006, 04:52 AM Good Luck! You have everyone on the forums supporting you (or hopefully ;)) If I go to WDW, can you let me in for free? jk jk ;) Anyways, good luck!

That is GREAT to know...
The entire College/Career Start program sounds like a lot of fun... It sounds like more of an adventure... than getting a job...
I'm happy that I don't HAVE to be in College... in order to participate in this exciting program...
Congratulations... I'm sure the memories you collect during this program, will stick with you for the rest of your life...

smilezlie 04-17-2006, 09:40 PM that sounds like fun.
i was going to apply for it when i was out of hs, but they dont have a disneyland version so it was just easier to go apply instead of doing the college thing.
i hope u get accepted, but dont be dead set on a certain attraction. they will put u where they most need u no matter what your wishes are, and as far as attractions at least at disneyland its a higher seniority attraction that most people want to work so while they do hire straight into the attraction sometimes they transfer you from within.
ex: you get hired into working big thunder at disneyland but want to work jungle. after like 6 months you can get cross trained on it only if the managers/leads approve.
but either way you should have fun with whatever you do...food, costuming, custodial, stores, or attractions.........

Oh don't worry, I know, and I am preparing myself. While I would ADORE to do Jungle Cruise (or any other sort of ride where you ARE the attraction, aka The Great Movie Ride, Kilamanjaro Safaris, etc), I realize that it is waaay more plausible for a fresh-out-of-high school CareerStart CM to be given something in Quick Service Food and Beverage, or Custodial, and I would be perfectly happy with either of those...expecially knowing that I'm planning on spending a veeerrry long time with Disney, and will have plenty of time to cross train in any position that my heart so chooses. For now, bring on the dustpan!
Ok, random thought...but you know what would be THE coolest job aside from ride operating? Balloon selling on Main Street! Um, yeah..heh
And thanks again to all of you wishing me luck (I'm gathering it all in a big, metaphorical hat, and will liberally smear it all over my letter when it arrives...Sorry, I'm weird at 12:45 am...).
To those of you expressing interest in the CareerStart program, college program, or Cast Membering in general...good luck! Maybe we'll see eachother someday, working in THE most magical place on earth :)
smilezlie 04-18-2006, 09:12 PM lol, balloons is fun, if you are super coordinated. your arm gets tired though, esp if its windy.
the best thing is when you are backstage and its like a million degrees outside with a hot dry wind and the balloons have been in the air conditioning and you go outside and you here "pop pop pop" and the madhatter jumps 10 feet in the air and you have the biggest smile on your face........
RubyRubia 04-18-2006, 09:42 PM That is awesome, Taryn!
Might I suggest working at the Haunted Mansion? You get to scream at the guests to " Get off of my walls "
Good times..
F0REVERL0ST 04-18-2006, 09:49 PM You sound like you are just the person Disney is looking for. You have a great attitude and seem very friendly. I wish you the best of luck! I'm sure you will enjoy getting to see the mouse everyday. It is a dream of mine to become an employee of Disney also and I am very happy to see your dream came true! :)
snowhitegrliesisterlover9 04-18-2006, 09:58 PM Best of luck Taryn I hope you get the job GOOD LUCK!!

PrincessAsh947 04-18-2006, 10:08 PM Good luck! I'm only 11 so it will be a while until I can do anything like that but I really want to go to college! Well I pray that you get the job!
Pinkdust 04-18-2006, 10:17 PM GOOD LUCK! That's so cool I've always wanted to be a charcter at DL.. like alice or sinderella, my favorites. hope you get the job and have fun!! :D

Ahaha, coordinated I am not. I'll have to work on that, because I have now decided that it is ANOTHER one of my personal goals in life to vend balloons!
That is awesome, Taryn!

The Haunted Mansion is actually one of my top choices, mainly because of the costume. I actually tried to recreate it for Halloween last year, but that kind of fell through, ha. The only think that would be hard for me with HM would be the whole "no smiling" thing, lol

lol, yes it is cute but my friends say its a pain to wear. its supposed to be mid calf length skirt and you have to wear the hair piece.
funny story: my friends "somehow" (some worked the attraction some didnt) managed to check out the green haunted mansion capes from disneyland costuming....and wore them to the 12:01am showing of harry potter and went as girls from slitherin. i was JEALOUS.....
my fave costume to wear had to be the old plaza inn costume at disneyland. while you have to be able to bend like no other to get into it and it was pink and girly i loved the skirt and im odd like that......

Well, I'm sure it's less of a pain to wear than an actualy charactor costume
And holy cow, I'm sooo jealous!! I'm very much anti-Slytherin, but I would jump at a chance to wear the HM robe to a midnight showing :) You're friends must have been pretty sneaky about it, I've heard that Costuming is reeeaaaally strict about taking the costumes off property.
Haha, and theres nothing odd about loving girly and pink...despite my affinity to the HM costume, I'd be just as happy in something frilly :D
Edit: Just read your PM, and since you mentioned your costume in your car, I'm guessing it's just WDW that won't let you take the costumes off property, lol

i think at WDW thats true. at disneyland you are allowed to take them off property. walt would roll over in his grave if he knew that. people arnt supposed to wear them off property. cast members are given a 20min walk time. so lets say ur off at 8pm, you get to start leaving at 7:40pm. that used to be so you could change and turn clothes into costuming, but now you can take ur costumes home with ya. you just arnt supposed to wear it out.

Poor Walt, I'm sure a buuunch of stuff people do would make him roll over in his grave. But at the same time, I would probably wear a piece of my costume too, if the opportune moment arrived ( aka: HP midnight showing/freezing my butt off/ etc). Oh man, the last 20 minutes of posting have made me SO EXCITED to be a Cast Member!

discounts are good too lol.
Taryn 04-19-2006, 07:10 AM discounts are good too lol.
Of course, of course ;) Getting into the parks for free is enough of a perk for me...you know you have a great job when you spend practically all of your free time there as well :D
Oathkeeper 04-21-2006, 07:37 AM Whoa, I haven't talked to you in FOREVER.
More specifically, I haven't talked to you since 11-18-2005 Re: AHHHH!
03:50 PM Taryn <-- this PM thing.
Actually, I might I have talked to you before that. I don't know why I still have that PM, but it's on the day Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire came to theaters. Coincidence? Hmm..
Anyways, congratulations on maybe, possibly becoming a cast member to Disneyworld! Disney World? One of the variations anyways. But that's sooo weird that you want to become a skipper, since I always wanted to do Jungle Cruise if I ever worked at Disneyland. But I just got back from a trip to Disneyland... yesterday.. and the skipper seemed so bored that I don't know if I want to anymore or not. If you become a skipper, you'll have to tell me if it gets boring after the first hilarious 200 times, okay?
Actually, Indiana Jones seems fun, too, if we would get to wear Indy costumes and run around in the dark, scary temple.. Or Tiki Room.... Adventureland is fun. Haunted Mansion scares me.
P.S. Disneyland >>>>>>>> Disney World.
