People who work for VMK can't be on all night long, so they close it during night hours.

ive been wondering this for a bit now why isn't vmk open 24/7 can anyone tell me?  :Embar:I consider it a gift to those of us VMK Add-ducks without enough self-control to end our game sessions in the absence of a VMK-imposed curfew. I mean, I get upset when I crash during the last ten minutes of VMK and I can't log back in...I can't imagine how late I would play every night if VMK didn't kick me out at some point (at least there's always the forum and forum chat 24/7!). Thank you, VMK, for helping me to artificially achieve a little more balance in my life than I would have if you were open around the clock. :)

From the main vmk.com website:

"Even when a game has great safety features and controls, there's no substitute for a hands-on approach and people to call on. That's why VMK is only open when we can moderate it:

10:00 a.m. — 1:00 a.m. EST
7:00 a.m. — 10:00 p.m. PST

Whenever the game is open, there are VMK Staff on hand to help Players."

no you just want an answer for something else MODS please close PM me for the reason if needed!
This is just an odd post!

The VMK staff cannot work all day. The VMK staff watches what you do and is there when you need to report someone. If we let the game go wild people would be describing ****** acts, saying cuss words (words that are allowed in the VMK dictionary that are close to cuss words..like as equals, not going that far) But things would be chaos in the land of VMK

Since there are fewer people logged on around closing time (and the number would continue dwindling into the wee hours of the night, presumably), it wouldn't take that many people to staff the graveyard shift. I think they shut down VMK for three reasons:

1) To test new content/fix bugs.

2) To avoid complaints from parents who don't want their kids to be able to play all night but refuse to take any responsibility for their kids' actions. :)

3) It's a little cheaper than staying open 24/7.

3) It's a little cheaper than staying open 24/7.

Its a LOT cheaper. Paying people for shift work with varying shifts, which may include the graveyard shift, can't be cheap. Especially not if you're also looking to get customer service people who will actually pay attention and not do other junk on the net during their shift.

There is another technical reason why they probably don't stay open 24/7: backups.

On a site this large, considering all the logging they do, backups probably take a long time.

Mr.Genie probably hit the biggest reason though -- maintenance. It's the only time they have to implement upgrades and fixes, plus test them.

Ever been to Disneyland or Magic Kingdom after closing? Some of us have and can tell you they turn on bright lights throughout the park and do most of their maintenance: clean the walkways, fix the rides, change the bulbs, clean the clithes on the pirates -- that kind of stuff. All so it's ready for the next day.

Same kind of thing in VMK.

Because vmk staff members can't watch the game all night they have to go to sleep.

id wager its more not wanting to pay the staff than maintenance.

ive played several other major MMORPGS (Star Wars Galaxies, World of Warcraft, Anarchy Online, City of Heros, Everquest, Rose) and they all were more or less 24/7 (generally down for about 4 hours a week or maintenance/etc) and they had a LOT more data to worry about vs what VMK has...

I play runescape as well as vmk.
They need multiple servers around the world so that people around the world could moderate while here in america peoplz were asleep
Then when the people halfway around the world leave work and go back home, the people in america wake up and do their jobs

vmk moderating 24/7 :wave2: :)

Am I the only one that realizes that this is a question that is on the questions list for being a Community Leader? That means that people can just copy off these answers if they want to be a Community leader...

:woohoo: thank you everyone now i can get that question out of my head  :goofy: :)Am I the only one that realizes that this is a question that is on the questions list for being a Community Leader? That means that people can just copy off these answers if they want to be a Community leader...I suspected you were right about this a few days ago, but I didn't see the harm. VMK Cast Members frequently browse the forum. I know they ask CL applicants not to share the questions, so anyone silly enough to do that on the forum is jeopardizing their own likelihood of becoming a CL. Also, I don't know how much the answers to these questions really affect the selection of CL's anyway. Lastly, I think VMK will catch on quickly if people start plagerizing this thread and copy/pasting answers into their application.

This thread poses a legitimate question, and I think it has sparked an interesting conversation. If it happens to be the same question that some people receive on their CL application, then so be it. :)
