View Full Version : Ride-a-Thon: They Finally Got it Right!

I just wanted to post a big THANK YOU to VMK for making the Everest Ride-a-Thon such a success. By opening many different rides and automating the prizes, it kept the lines short and made for a much more fun event. Also, I am impressed with their ability to automatically open and close rooms at the scheduled times, and make it so that only the entrance rooms show up in the Popular rooms list. Many past events have been chaotic at best and left a lot of people frustrated, but this shows that VMK is aware of the past problems and is really trying to make things better. Also, the ride rooms were great (it must be nice to have access to unlimited free furniture ;)).

Yes this event is great espeacially with the prizes. It takes 10 minutes to get in a room and they are just plain fun to ride.

i second this all the way! I guess they do learn and I hope all events in the future are as successful!

Yup, I loved the new Ride-A-Thon. Although a straight ride peice isn't much fun, it sells for 40 credits! :D

I didn't get my snow rug so today is going to be great! :)

I agree with you 100%!

Hi , in my opinion this is the most well organized event ever. Not only that but you only wait for about 2 mins b4 coming into the ride. Anyone else agree?

I do believe that VMK is finally getting the event management correct. Even when I ended up in a queue in another room, instead of the ride, I still got my prize. I am impressed, and relieved, that things are starting to look better at event time. See, if you practice something long enough you might actually get good at it.

I think that they should temporarily lift the limit on the line. It moves so fast anyway there is no need for it.

this is how every event should be like
THIS FAST!!!!!!!!

I love how at the end, you get a message saying you have earned the item for riding it. I thought we would have to wait for a staff member to trade it to us. I'm glad that VMK is making some good changes in how they work their events.

It is a great event, but definetely not the best.
You cant get in any of the lines for the ride. Although, vmk made a lot of great rides and if u can get into the line it goes by prety fast.

Everybody gets a chance at the event and the prize. And the instant reward is awesome!
Getting a queue can be annoying, as is falling off mid ride (no prize). But since getting back in is far less painful than past event, it isn't the big deal it once was.
Overall, I'd say this event rocks!
Well done, VMK!

Proabably not the best event ever, but probably the most organised - it may takes ages to find a queue with less than 50 people in but once you do the line goes so quick and i havent dc once
Only problem is getting bumped off the tracks lol

Have fun - Made :wave2:

I'm really glad that the Ride-a-Thon wasn't too long and didn't take forever to get in, even with the 50 players in line. I did think at first that it was going to be the longest ride ever, like their Staff River Ride. And they did give the snow rug really fast too!

Mr.Genie only is removing yours because the forums don't need that much clutter.

OR he may have posted first and you didn't know..

This was such a waste of a Saturday I could have gone to the movies to see Date Movie! I am not trying tomorrow either then I will just waste my Sunday too! That was 5 hours I will never get back arg such a waste! The Snow Rugs weren't even worth it because it will become just like the Skull Rock rooms worth nothing! Wow, calm down. For one thing, the iPod contest is not about who should deserve it more. The rules were stated clear that it was a random drawing and everybody that was on VMK between 1-6 PM Pacific time is pretty much in the drawing. Another thing, about 4,000 players were on VMK around the time of the VMK Ride-a-Thon went on, so you should know that the odds of winning is pretty small.

I still say that you should give it a shot and try for an hour or two, but if you still feel like you could have done something better than to wait to try to win an iPod, then don't do it. :)

The funny thing, I only seemed to "fall off" in the rooms with no re-entry set up. (oh VMK how you mock me :) )But I think the changes made to accomodate "fall offs" are really great, and show the cast really are listening and care about making us happy!

Lines moved slower today though, wonder why?

I was all prepared to try the event and then come here complaining about it.

I've shocked even myself by thinking that there really is very little to complain about. It wasn't too difficult to get into line (usually it took me two or three tries to find a room with space). The queue moved quickly (the ones I timed averaged two minutes to get into the room). The rides were the right size so there were very few bumps to the entrance. Many rooms were setup to handle that. And the auto-reward feature was nice to see. I'm not actually sure there is anything I could say I would improve!

But you know me... I have to complain about something... :D And actually, I have three things:

First, I don't think its much of an event. It is great to see the rooms the first time. After that, I entered the ride and went to another window to read VMK Forums or another website. We don't do anything. Events that engage us and make us active participants in the event have been the most fun - and hey, thats the whole point of the game!

Building on that, its that we don't learn much either. I think the biggest reason staff rooms should exist is to provide good examples that players can use to inspire them and build on them. But I can't think of anything I saw in any of the rooms that I hadn't already seen in another players room first. The few things I did see were items that us players can't get yet!

Finally, and related to that, was that it shows off features that we don't have. I know I would love a way to have a room open, but that people can't enter directly. As a game designer, I'd love a way to automatically give someone a prize by mail. But we can't do that - can we?

So a thumbs-up for great planning, but I think there is still room for improvement.

I got a stack of 15 carpets in my storage room from the event! Today I plan on getting like 50 ice cubes for my ride. But I agree with you guys, they did do it in a nice fahion and the room lines are at a steady pace waiting wise.

This was called an event, and it was well done. But, I think it was more a crowd control experiment as well as a small example of how to run our ride rooms for next weekend.

They enticed us with a free gift. This help to guantee a large crowd. They had many rooms opened and we saw that it worked great. Now staff can take this idea and build on it to build a great event.

Also, we saw that people got bumped off the rides. This is a warning for us who have ride rooms so we know some of the errors we can expect.

It was not a true event, but it was something to learn from for us and staff. :)

I think that this was a good test on what vmk can do. I am ready though to see something on a larger scale.

What kind of "larger scale" were you thinking?

If things are as automatic as they seem, I think more expanded hours might be good. It isn't clear why it was only open from 1 till 6 - you never saw a staff member in the rooms.

I don't think more rooms would be good without more care being taken - crashing to the entrance is still a real problem, and was only mitigated by carefull room planning and a limited ride size.
