Beta is like the testing phase of vmk. It's before they had all the bugs out, etc.

most technological items espesialy mmorpgs( i know some arnt a geek like me. mmorpg stands for massive multiplayer online role playing game) such as vmk go through a beta pieriod. this is where a section of it is relesed to the public to find out what bugs and glitches are in the game and what people like and dont like about it
