View Full Version : VMK GUIDE: How to NOT Get Disconnected!

I've seen complaints all over the Forums and even more on VMK concerning how they got disconnected when they were doing a Staff game, etc. A lot of these people are asking why. I know Priz has stated on these Forums that he didn't get disconnected for several hours simply by moving furniture in his own room every two seconds; this is great if you're in your own room, but what if you're in someone else's room and can't move furniture?

Being the on-the-go Community Leader I am, I was helping out in the entrances for the Monster Mazes. I was saying something about every 15 seconds and only got disconnected once. After VMK had closed and I was taking a shower, I was contemplating why I had only disconnected once in those few hours I had been on VMK and how I could not get disconnected so often in the future. The answer fell out of the shower head and hit me square on the noggin:

KEEP MYSELF BUSY.

"Busy" meaning talking, dancing, eating chocolate, drinking water, waving, turning scoreboards on, moving furniture, magicking, and walking. Now, I know this may seem hackneyed and obvious to many of you, but to the people who are still ranting about getting disconnected and demanding to know why, your answer has come.

This doesn't mean that you should be doing magic every 5 seconds; this will keep you from disconnecting but will slow the game down immensely for everyone else. I also don't recommend dancing. Same thing. But saying things, moving around, and waving occasionally will, I guarantee, at least double your chances of staying connected.

So, how do you know if you're about to get disconnected? I have a Windows laptop with wireless Internet, but if you've got a desktop computer with Windows but with a modem (which means you've got a wire stuck into your machine) this will still apply to you. If you've got a Mac, this won't apply to you. But anyway, I've discovered the secret to knowing when to "get busy" doing something. Take a look:

http://www.imagebucket.net/images/CookieThief/connected.gif

In the Taskbar that should be on the bottom of your screen, there's a little icon in the shape of a desktop monitor (or, if you've got a modem connection, a little icon of two computers. In the image above, the wireless icon is lit up: the little computer has a blue screen. That means (I'm pretty sure) I'm currently sending/recieving information via my wireless Internet connection. The little screen is always blue when I say something, dance, or walk around in VMK. Now take a look at this:

http://www.imagebucket.net/images/CookieThief/notconnected.gif

The little computer icon's screen is black. That means I'm not currently sending or receiving information via my Internet connection. This happens whenever I'm standing still. When I'm on VMK now, I constantly glance at that little icon to make sure the computer screen is almost always lit up.

May you never get disconnected
While you're playing VMK -
May your connection never be affected
Each and every day.

I agree with this. I was quite amazed that I was on helping at the gold maze entrance for over four hours without a single disconnect. All the ppl around me were disconnecting like crazy. I was not moving around at all. I was sitting in a chair the whole time but was talking like every 15 seconds give or take a few. I actually could have stayed on longer too, but logged off when I had to go do something in rl. There were several times when I thought I would dc because my computer got really slow, but I did not. It was the longest I have ever been on vmk without a single disconnect.

I agree with most of this, but unfortunately this will not work for everyone. About the magicking, this actually increases your chances of not disconnecting, but crashing, especially in a well-populated room. Just standing still and talking is not good either. It is actually worse to stand still and only talk. It is best to keep moving around. You can stand still and wave and/or dance, because that will minimize your chances of disconnecting.

I have a theory that disconnecting happens when there is little or no activity happening in the game. If the game sense you are not there, it could shut itself off. Or, it could be that your internet connection loses its link with the server. Who knows...

Ok well the opposite actually happened for me yesterday when I was helping staff with the maze event. I was sitting on a chair perfectly still and talking. I was on for over 4 hours and never lost connection. I could have stayed on longer but had to do something in real life so I logged off. I never moved out of the chair, but was talking a lot.

You have that really correct i would have to say... when i am not doing anything, i will most likely look back at the screen unable to move!

i have a theory to why this works!

when vmk gets too full and the surver is processing too many people it has to kick someone out. but if you are moving, talking, whatever. you are sending information to the surver so it needs more processor to stop you sending information and disconnect you. so it picks on the person sending the least information.

unfortunately if the surver selects you in one of those moments you are doing nothing you may get disconnected but it is very rare!

Ok with all this well-thought info i have come to a conclusion. I know all of u are deflating your brains thinking about how to not get disconnected but it is impossible. Sometimes u might get dc quicker than other times but ultimately u will always get dc no matter what. I'm sorry to break it to yea but ur thinking was a little pointless.

Ok, once night I had to go to bed and I had just gotten into VMK. I left it on the map.

9 hours later, after waking up, I found I was still on the map page! I was able to click around but not get into any rooms or anything.

Another thing, when your waiting in a queue behind players, close down all unnecessary windows you have open (do this before you get in line) and just keep it on VMK.

Don't play with other windows. It will increase your chance of disconnecting.

OK, those are my tips.

Also, taking off your hat helps too.

Hey i have a way to not get dc in line to get in the room here it is:
First you should log out unless if you got dc or crashed then you go into the room and it will be rare for you to be dc in like an hour i have done it and i had waited for like an hour and i had to wait for like ten minutes in the line in the room i was about to play but i got dc

I've got an idea, why doesn't Yavn or somebody from VMK address this issue on the forums. We all have to deal with getting Dc'ed, crashing, and just plain freezing. Maybe they could tell us which of these work and which are just urban myths. Please Yavn as much as I'd like to know when the flying carpet magic will be out (this week right :) ), I'd like to hear from the experts on this.

That is true but actually it makes the game go slower also if you talk so thats why you just got to not talk, dance and do magic. Waving makes you stay alive more but aventually crashes you.

Getting disconnected often has to do with bandwidth. Bandwidth is like a straw. If you try to breathe through a straw clogged up with anything, you will receiver only a small amount of air, and sooner or later you will not get air at all. Likewise, when you get dc, it means the bandwidth, or "straw" is "clogged up" or filled with information. Usually, it means your computer is working hard proccessing information from vmk, so occasionally, you will get dc for a good purpose. It helps save your computers energy. Remember, vmk takes alot of space on your internet onnection, so be mindful to not run too many programs on your computer. 1 computer window on is enough.

DarthChaosSky
02-22-2006, 02:45 PM
If you wave talk or dance, it actually adds more trouble to bandwidth, bc it has to carry and transfer these commands to vmk. It "clogs" your bandwith up even more.

DarthChaosSky
02-22-2006, 02:51 PM
The Magic crashing you incident is a rumor. No official vmk authority has said anything about magic crashing you, although it does slow down your bandwith connection and helps "clog" it up, which eventually leads to dc, but magic is not the only factor. The fact that you are playing vmk can get you dc too.

to things

long line:

1) log out of vmk before you get on line
2) log back on
3) get in the line
4) get some thing in rl to do such as your game boy or if you have a mule work with it but check your main person a lot

thing 2

try blocking a door teleporter with a pink organ it works
