View Full Version : "A Word A Week!"

I think we all know the VMK Dictionary or "Allowed Words List" is ridiculously short. To some of us, perhaps, this doesn't present a problem as it seems many conversations on VMK consist of "are u taken omg lolz cute or boot i heart green day!" But to others (those interested in having a real conversation with our friends) the limits are extremely frustrating! There are many words that have no business being forbidden; words that couldn't possibly offend anyone and would make communicating a whole lot easier. So this is why I propose that we, the community known as VMK Forum members, group together and suggest a word (and possible variations on that word) every week. The SAME word, a word that we can all agree does nothing to jeopardize anyone's safety, a word that was simply left off the initial list for no particular reason. By doing this in greater numbers, and with the focus on one particular word, it is my hope that someday soon we can talk like actual human beings.

This week's suggested words are: "Obvious and Obviously"

Please, if you are interested in expanding our incredibly limited vocabulary, click the "Contact Us" link on the VMK main page and under reason, select "I would like to suggest a word for the VMK Dictionary." Then type in this week's suggest word(s) and send!

It's definitely worth a shot in my opinion, and make sure to check back here every Wednesday for a new suggested word!
(EDIT: MisterToad has alerted me that the dictionary traditionally gets updated on Tuesday, so check for the new suggested word every Wednesday, that way we have a whole week to suggest before they make changes.)

((SECOND EDIT: Well, the new words list came out and no "Obvious" or "Obviously" were to be found. Therefore, I suggest we stick with these words until they are approved! There's no reason to move on to the next word until they acknowledge our first attempt at getting one added. So keep suggesting "Obvious" and "Obviously" until they're in our dictionary!))

And P.S. Please feel free to suggest words on here, as some people already have. Your proposal might very well might be the next installment on "Aw-Aw" (A Word A Week) Tell your friends!

This is a very good suggestion. I will suggest obvious this week. I hope others will do this. Might I suggest that you put up a word nominating thread. My personal quest is to have VMK add words that are needed to say names of rooms and items in the game. Tops on my priority list are beige, Gus, Phineas, Ezra and attic.

I will also suggest Obvious and obviously.

Maybe next week we can try to say, "elevator"?

Yeah "guys" is another great suggestion; I've wanted to say that forever. You can say girls and ladies, why not guys? I think that's going to beat out "attic" for next week's word.

Excellent idea, friend. Excellent idea indeed. I have a long list of words that I would like to add to the list (word being one of them) and I think if a lot of people contact them, then they would be more than happy to comply with our requests. Everyone just has to tell their friends and make sure to write every week with our new agreed upon word.

I can't stop laughing about this. I've wanted "Obvious" in the dictionary for so long I finally created a player with that name and added her to my friend list so I can say it! :D

Lol GBShorts. I did that for the word pink awhile ago, when it wasn't allowed, but they wouldn't accept the name Pink... I think the word "word" should be allowed. I mean, how else can we say "Please do not use a word in place of another word." I'm going to make a new character titled word. Hopefully they will accept that... This is a great idea for a thread. :xmas17: CL_MsFantasyGal

Well, it's about time for VMK's first (possibly) buccaneer to finally suggest buccaneer! Also, wouldn't it be nice to express other feelings of joy such as amazing or booya? I know I sure would. ;)

And, Princess, we know that. However, we want more words that are often overlooked. I'm sick and tired of hearing how "awesome" or "cool" something is. How about amazing? I would really like to say that!

I don't understand why on Earth we can't say wasn't, isn't, and shouldn't. They are all very common and a slightly shorter way to type things.

Exactly! It's things like that that inspired me to make this post. Although if I'm not mistaken I think you can't say "wasnt" and "isnt" without the apostrophes (which again makes no sense). But you are right about "shouldn't" - you can't say that in any form and it definitely drives me crazy.. lots of good suggestions!

And to GBShorts, I used to title extra characters with words I wanted to say all the time, such as "Sneak" "Chumps" and most notably, "Obviously". However, something happened to that character before I could get it on my friends list, and of course now you can't say those extra characters' titles without them actually being signed on. Another thing I really wish they'd change..

woot Blot! Way to organize.

As soon as I get home from work,I am going to use the contact page to suggest obvious and obviously.

I would like to lobby for the following words to be the Aw-Aw at some point: Toad, word, amazing and indubitably. That's all I know I want added for now, I shall think up more later.

I would REALLY like those added. when I say either of those names, they come out as "###" I would really like to have those added because when the noobs come along, we can say " Oh wait here there is a ghost coming title <insert-ghost-name-here> and he gives you free credits!" "He just left but will brb"

GraspingClaw
12-29-2005, 05:54 PM
Yeah, don't get me wrong, it would be nice to be able to say those ghosts' names, and there's no reason we shouldn't be able to, but I'm hoping VMK just gets with the program on that one by themselves. Maybe we'll wait a few weeks and see if they add them, and then if not, we can take it upon ourselves.

Skeletons. We can't say it and it drives me nuts because I have to say "I collect Skeleton." And a word a day is better :) Once PINK came out I said it over and over and over again. And why can we only use a word twice? Like

Hello hello Hello hello.

Doesn't make sense. Also, why can't we say WORD? I mean.. hello?!? You use to be able to say my name but now you can't. Oh well.

Great idea! This is a good use of power in numbers! "Obviously" is probably the first word I would have suggested for the dictionary, too. Another suggestion: "Hopefully" would be very useful to have when talking about prospective lands and games. :)

Yeah, good luck with getting those approved, THAT'S never gonna happen. But I agree with not being able to say 'name.' I'm sure blocking the word 'name' is another safety precaution to keep kids safe, but you can't even say the names of people on your friends list when they're not online, let alone tell anyone your own real name. I mean, come on. Hopefully is another good one that I discovered the other day that really needs to be added. By the way, a word a week would probably work better because the quantity of people that would contact VMK is going to be a lot higher during the span of one week, than one day.

Greenway

I agree, too many words needed to just limit it to a word a week.

Skeletons. We can't say it and it drives me nuts because I have to say "I collect Skeleton." And a word a day is better :)

I have needed skeleton before as well.

Another word in a room title we can't use is horseshoe. In addition, you can't say register, as in cash register in the shops. It would be easier to help new people learn how to shop if you could say cash register. Also, they need to add loop as in loop builder package.

I have some:

Eww, Whee!, (It is driving me nuts how people are reduced to saying "we,") Umm or Um, and see/seeing.

EDIT: I know 'call' is blocked for DUH reasons, but how would you say your phone number? You can't even say the word 'number!' And I'm sick of saying, 'title me Pink'. It is pathetic! ;)

You're not supposed to say your phone number...are you being sarcastic?

GraspingClaw

You're not supposed to say your phone number...are you being sarcastic?

What she's saying is that we can't say numbers as it is, so where's the harm in adding the word "call" if you can't tell anyone how to call you? She wants it added for the right reasons, not the wrong ones.

The thing is, people could always use substitutes if they were really set on giving out a phone number and breaking VMK's rules - it just boils down to whether or not you're a person who cares about respecting the values and if you care about getting banned (which you surely would for that kind of dictionary dancing). It stinks for those of us who have no intentions of misusing those words, or many others, because as we all know it makes it really hard to communicate. I personally don't plan on trying to get numbers approved, because I have no faith that VMK will ever change their stance on that issue. They're way too afraid of people exchanging ages, phone numbers, and addresses, and even though people could probably still find a way to say all of those things, I'm positive that VMK is committed to make it as difficult as they can. So to everyone who wants the ability to spew some digits, I hear you.. but it ain't gonna happen.

So Blot, what's the word this week?

GraspingClaw
01-03-2006, 07:49 PM
I wish we could say accidentally.

Funny story..

That was one of the first words I wanted to be able to say when I started playing VMK, so I created a character entitled (what else) "Accidentally". He's still alive and well, actually, but of course now we can't use titles unless that character is currently signed on so it's not doing me any good anymore.

But! I later discovered that you CAN say "accidently", because apparently nobody owns a spellcheck over at the VMK word-maker department. So yeah.. you can get by with that until they add the real thing.

Okay so new the word list came out today, and "Obvious" or "Obviously" weren't on it, but I'm not about to give up! I say we stick with these words until they're added, then move on to the next ones. Thanks for everyone that suggested and keep it up!

We should be able to say Behold and Inc.

MisterToad
01-04-2006, 05:53 PM
We should be able to say Behold and Inc.Actually inc. was added to the dictionary today. Unfortunately VMK does not treat punctuation as part of a word. Since inc is not in the dictionary, we can't say inc. in VMK. There are other words in the dictionary that we can't say for the same reason, such as sci-fi, t-shirt, and zip-up.

Should I suggest "obviously" again? Or are we not supposed to suggest the same word more than once?

I was wondering the same thing. Since they 'obviously' (hee hee, get it) didn't catch our drift about adding the words, I don't think suggesting again will do any harm. If anyone has any mule accounts then I would suggest the words on those, too. We need to let VMK know that we are serious about making it easier to communicate!!
