View Full Version : Why I Keep Banning Certain Threads

Today, like most days, there have been several threads of the following variety (I am not quoting anyone here, just making up a general example):

"OMG, I was in the [insert room name] today and all of a sudden this guy walked up to a girl and said [insert most horrible thing you can think of to say that is still allowed by the VMK dictionary]. ISN'T THAT SO WRONG???!!1"

This post will inevitably be followed by one or both of the following replies:

"OMG that is the worst thing I have ever seen! Report it!"

or...

"Well that's nothing..the other day I saw someone say [insert even more horrible example of something that is allowed by the VMK dictionary]. EWW!!1"

I understand why some of you feel the need to start threads like this or post replies to threads like this, but please take a minute to think about what you are doing...

1) You are providing an example of something that is inappropriate in VMK. Even though this is not the same as you actually saying the inappropriate things you are quoting, would you be willing to walk up to a Cast Member in VMK in a room full of people and type, "Guess what I just heard- [insert nasty comment of your choice]". I dare say you would not, for fear of being banned. I fail to see how quoting the same comment in a "G"-rated public forum is that much different; in fact, the potential audience is much wider here.

2) Though most forum members and guests browsing the forum are probably upstanding VMK citizens, do you really want to provide additional examples of unruly behavior to the small percentage of forum browsers that will likely head straight into VMK with this new information and test it out? I believe this compounds the problem.

3) Rather than posting examples of bad VMK behavior on the forum and opening it up for discussion, wouldn't your time be better spent reporting the incident to VMK? I know some of you routinely do both, but if you are only posting it to the forum I fail to see how this will help to alleviate the problem in any way; to me, posting it can only make matters worse.

Thus, when I run across a post similar to the examples above, and usually with the replies I've also shown above, I am more likely than not to ban this thread in an attempt to avoid issues #1-3. Occasionally, there is some other valuable tangential discussion in the same thread, and I will attempt to edit out any inappropriate examples in an effort to not "throw out the baby with the bathwater"; however, in my experience these are few and far between.

I don't really expect to slow down these types of threads from being started, as it would appear that they are irresistible. However, please try to understand my rationale for banning some of these threads, and I wish you would give some thought to my arguments before posting a thread of this nature to see if it is really the type of thing you ought to be quoting in a "G" rated forum.

Thank you for your time. If anyone has a counter-argument to why these threads should be allowed, I'd love to hear it. :)

He's right. It's addictive.

I guess, to me, it's interesting to see how people manage to get around the rules in VMK...

from a comical standpoint.

I agree with you, however that it can get out of hand.

MrG,

Just want to say I wholeheartedly agree with you and support your decision.

It isn't necessary to give examples of how people are breaking VMK values. The proper thing as MrG said is to report it and move one.

I have no intention of being rude by questioning your authority, but MrGenie, can you tell me what happened to my Space Mountain Photos thread? Are we not allowed to link to our own sites, or other sites, for that matter? If so, I apologize, and I did not know. I know you are trying to keep VMK Forums clean of pointless, rude, or other threads/posts like that, but I'm confused as to why they were taken down. If I wasn't allowed, I'm sorry, and I'll make sure to pay better attention to the rules. :)

There is a general policy against advertising on the forum, and I believe one of the mods determined that your link was somehow related to advertising. Personally, I enjoyed your pictures very much. :) I would check with Silly Princess on this one. Next time I am chatting with the other Mods I'll try to remember to bring this up as I am also curious what the rationale was for this decision.

Let me start by saying that I concur with MrGenie's actions. Even tho I started one of the threads that was censored.

Thank you for your time. If anyone has a counter-argument to why these threads should be allowed, I'd love to hear it. :)

The reason I posted it was that there had been a lot of discussion about "oh, the dictionary protects us" or "oh, its not that bad", and what I ran across was that bad and worse. I intended to provide it as a fair warning, and also an illustration of how well it was handled - both by the person affected and by VMK staff.

But as I said - the way I did it was inappropriate for the audience of this board, just like it was inappropriate for the people who witnessed it in the game.

I totally agree. Threads like these should be deleted. It is after all desterbing to a lot of users and makes them feel uncomftorable. It has happened to me on countless occasions. :sadd2:But the feeling in your room when you boot those people is great! :lachen70: :woohoo: :lachen70:

I agree with banning the threads........but...........I like to know what someone said that that got them banned so I do not make the same mistake. I got a warning today. It scared me to death. I would not want it to happen to me or anyone.

It really is useless to post those types of threads. You're just gossiping, about something that shouldn't have happened in the first place, and you are creating a huge problem. Not only the things MrGenie posted, but you are making more work for MrGenie (and most likely other people too).

MrGenie (and the other people that I cxan't quite name off the top of my head, but your work is still appreciated), thank you for all your hard work!

I agree with you, Genie. If the room isn't appropriate on VMK, do you think a G-rated forum wants to hear of it? No.

LOL.

I feel like the time is right to bump this thread. I have seen several threads lately where people are posting examples of bad room names in VMK. Please read my comments in the first post if you're curious why I banned these. Thanks.

Gee, that must be really annoying of those posters. First you ban it, then everyone continues -_____-; Sorta like in HP 5 when they banned the Quibbler and everyone was reading it -nods- :D But I totally agree. I hate seeing random people postinng gross stuff. If it was so gross to them, then why post it again? lol

mr.genie i compleatly agree with your views on this issue. ppl post these things saying that it will polutte a childs mind and they dont reslize they are furthering that by writing it on a second site where it aint going away in 30 sec. good work on this one
