View Full Version : My Virtual Disney Theory
Duhlamon 07-07-2005, 09:38 PM Today, I was thinking of people, such as Mr. Lunatix, who have been playing VMK since the first few days of beta testing, and was wondering how close they are to having everything. I mean once you own everything, win all the games, pins and quests, and have all the codes you can find, what is there left to do in VMK? Yes, the new lands will open soon, but that is about as far as they can take the Virtual Magic Kingdom without changing their original ideas and maps for the game.
Thus my theory emerged from my warped mind that Disney will someday carry on their legacy of virtual theme parks with Epcot, MGM, Animal Kingdom, and so on. In order to keep up with the growing demand for new and exciting games and ideas they will have to continue to evolve the game. Otherwise old players' interest will drop off and other theme park companies (i.e. Universal Studios, Busch Gardens, Sea World) will learn how to compete as players become bored with the monotony.
I am not saying Disney is not the most amazing theme park conglomerate in the world, but I do think that VMK is an excellent promotional tool for players and Disney fans alike, and they should definately keep it going with the other parks.
Sorry if I have bored you all with my insanity, I just felt I should share my thoughts.

toonysean 07-07-2005, 09:44 PM ok that was long interesting theory though
holmes: watson! take that as a note!
watson: yes sir
GBShorts 07-07-2005, 10:41 PM I started playing on the 24th...and supposedly the game opened the afternoon of the 23rd.(correct me if I'm wrong?)
I've gotten many things but in no way have it "all"...
I don't have teleportation...inferno...cursed storm...many of the things in the shops, nor do I have all of the rooms one can get.
I still play for the "talking to my friends" factor. I'm content with what I have, but it doesn't mean I've given up trying to get more. :)
MouseStreet 07-07-2005, 11:23 PM I started back on the first day, but I don't have everything. Sure, I've gotten some pretty good stuff that not a lot of folks have, but I don't have everything. I've only got 800-something credits.

Oh yeah, I'm destitute. Like 100 credits. Seriously.
I should have worked toward buying everything in the shops before the prices went up. Jeez.
Becky 07-08-2005, 02:41 AM yeah, I'm like broke too :P lol. I started on the first day, aka the 23rd of May. Are u referring to Beta Beta Testing or Beta Testing on the 23rd? Was MrL a 23rd or Beta Beta Testing tester?

*cough* what?
LOL You mean an Alpha tester? :)
Becky 07-08-2005, 02:43 AM LOL. I call the Beta before the 23rd Beta .. Beta Beta Testing :P lol
DoublethePop 07-08-2005, 03:09 AM Aw, they forgot Gamma and Omega and stuff! Anyway, no one has everything quite yet. The magic carpet magic pin is yet to come out, and so does the pirate skull room.
Duhlamon 07-08-2005, 03:10 AM LOL I guess the only way to know is to ask him when he started. I guess with the way they are changing some magic pins (like invisibility) to be "5 star pins" it would take quite a while to get everything, but it COULD happen, especially with the way some of us are addicted
I do agree that I should have invested in more furniture before the park opened, but to be honest, I had no idea they were going to raise the prices that high! My sister was smart and kept everything she bought, whether she used it or not. I just sold it all back to get more credits, LOL. It would be nice to have some of the rather more expensive items for trade.

JCarter 07-08-2005, 08:45 AM It's highly unlikely anyone will have anything for a while, especially since they made it so the shop items/colors rotate.
Fraisie 07-08-2005, 11:59 AM I've been playing since the first days too, and I still enjoy the game very much. Always nice to talk with the friends i've made there, and a good old fireworks game once in a while is fun :) I'm curious to know how many private beta testers there were...
AdventureKid 07-08-2005, 12:13 PM I dont remember when i started. I know it was in the Beta Testing because
there were only about 200 people playing it a day. Now its like 1200 people!
prisoner 07-08-2005, 01:10 PM Today, I was thinking of people, such as Mr. Lunatix, who have been playing VMK since the first few days of beta testing, and was wondering how close they are to having everything. I mean once you own everything, win all the games, pins and quests, and have all the codes you can find, what is there left to do in VMK?
Ok, I don't mean to sound cynical and negative, but why do you think the objective is to "have everything"? How many museums can VMK support? What good is having it all if everyone else does too?
My opinion, and it is purely my opinion, is that its not what you have its what you do with it. It is the rooms that you create and the people who come to it. It is the friends that you create in this virtual world and the fun you can have together.
Thus my theory emerged from my warped mind that Disney will someday carry on their legacy of virtual theme parks with Epcot, MGM, Animal Kingdom, and so on. In order to keep up with the growing demand for new and exciting games and ideas they will have to continue to evolve the game.
I think that this will happen eventually if they expect to keep VMK as a going concern - but that each one may be a long time coming. More likely is that they will shoe-horn some of the scenes from many of those parks (and DCA and we can hope DisneySea, but that is less likely) into the existing park. It isn't as outrageous as you think - most of them are based on the original lands anyway, and that is how Disneyland (the park) handled most of it.
But they will have to evolve the game - adding more mini-games periodically. Holding activities. Making more things dynamic in some of the other rooms.
Otherwise old players' interest will drop off and other theme park companies (i.e. Universal Studios, Busch Gardens, Sea World) will learn how to compete as players become bored with the monotony.
Disney has a few advantages that these don't. Disney is identified as a theme park - most of the others don't have the same kind of theming. Disney can also tap into its long history of movies, tv, and radio, while only Universal has anywhere near that kind of breadth. Universal doesn't have the same kind of brand recognition as Disney does - one of the more common questions at WDW is if the monorail runs to Islands of Adventure (a Universal park).
Finally, I think Disney understands the cocnepts of using different media to tell stories, and I think with VMK they have finally realized that the computer is just as valid a way to tell that story as their movies, their tv shows, and their theme parks.
I am not saying Disney is not the most amazing theme park conglomerate in the world, but I do think that VMK is an excellent promotional tool for players and Disney fans alike, and they should definately keep it going with the other parks.
I definately think they will keep it going. I'm not sure they need to actually add the other parks to pull it off.
Sorry if I have bored you all with my insanity, I just felt I should share my thoughts.
Not boring at all. {: Thank you for sharing. (And for giving me the jumping off point to be boring.)
Duhlamon 07-08-2005, 01:32 PM Good analysis of my post, prisoner. I did feel a little like a psych ward patient for a moment, but yes you have many valid points. Thus why I dubbed it my "Theory" because I was interested at what other people had to say about the idea.
And recently I have discovered that I sign on a few hours before close and then when VMK closes for the night, I find that I have played NO games what so ever, because I enjoy talking to all of you people in the game so much. :) I tend to lose track of time talking to my new found friends instead of working toward a goal of total VMK domination, as with many others. If they do change anything, it will be a long time coming.

I played the game from the first week of beta and my other user who started about 3-4 weeks ago is more succsesful than the first user. The first user unlucky has one room and a little bit of credits. DarkReina, the other user, has i think 5 rooms and more credits than unlucky. DarkReina has more things than unlucky. DarkReina is WAY better than unlucky. Maybe unlucky lives to her name. lol.
Supernova08 07-17-2005, 06:01 AM Okay, well, how i see it....
I'm not sure how many weeks VMK has been open, I've only been a member for about a little over a week now, and I already have all 3 pirate medals, 3 fireworks pins, and the hidden mickeys, but with a capacity of about 2000, VMK is still decently small. I realize that 2000 is ALOT of people to be on at the same time, and VMK is amazingly popular, but they will never stop adding new and exciting things as long as it remains popular. Soon they will have Tomorrowland and Frontierland, and, hopefully, many more games (for me to win, lol). But I have to say, a Virtual Epcot would be the COOLEST thing in the universe!!!! But to keep VMK alive and well, they need to add alot more than just new lands and a game or two, they need to make is more interactive. More of a reason for people to interact with others. I'm not sure how they would do that, but I'm sure Disney will come up with something.... :mickeymo:
CoolmanJosh 07-17-2005, 01:38 PM I could picture to get the game more in dept to Disney parks have like other parks to then just magic kingdom like EPCOT,MGM, Animal Kingdom, and more. That could be a thury. :mickey2:
MissAmber 07-17-2005, 01:41 PM I started just a few days after BETA started (not ended) it was like, May 25th. I am no where near to having any cool stuff. The best thing I have is a set of thunder mountain teleports. I hav a space suit too. Well now that I think of it I am kind of rich. Coming up on about 4,000 credits soon.
