View Full Version : Hidden Mickey Quest: Cost vs. Reward
wnderlndkitty 07-06-2005, 06:39 PM So today, being the geek that i am, i decided to test the Hidden Mickey Quest as it now works in VMK. I took a new character out and tested to see how much i would have to spend to complete the quest and what i would gain in return. This is what I learned:
To start the quest you spend -200 credits and receive 1 camera and 3 film.
After taking your photo you receive +50 credits and a shirt
In order to take 9 more photos to get to ten photos you will need two more rolls of film at 200 credits each (-400), bringing your film count to 12
After reaching 10 Mickeys found you receive +50 credit and a bronze Mickey pin
You are now at 3 film again, requiring you to purchase two more rolls of film (-400) bringing you again to 12 film
10 photos later you are down to 3 film again and receive +50 credits
Another purchase of two rolls of film(-400) brings you again to 12 film
10 photos later you once again are down to 3 film and this time receive +50 credits and your Silver Mickey pin.
More film purchases (-400) to reach 12 film to allow for another 10 shots
10 shots later you are down to 3 film and receive +50 credits
You make one more purchase of 2 rolls of film at (-400) bringing you again to 12 film
As you complete the final ten photos you receive A Gold Mickey pin and +500 credits (for your shopping needs)
Okay now the actual analysis for those of you who don't feel like doing math.
Cost = -2200 credits spent
Reward = +750 credits earned as well as three mickey pins and a shirt
As the Mickey shirt is purchasable in the game at 25 credits we can count the value as such bringing the Reward Value to +775 credits (assuming you were planning to purchase that Mickey Shirt)
So ultimately you will spend 1325 credits in the attempt to earn your three Mickey Pins.
If anyone wants further data or analysis, i am a total geek and can show you more breakdowns.
Thoughts?
PS. It actually cost me a bit more than listed because being silly i accidently bought extra cameras with film instead of just film. This is a very easy error to make if you aren't paying complete attention to what you are clicking on
LOL, extra cameras. But yes, I too have thought of this when I took a shower this morning. Well, it is highly expensive now, especially with all these whacked out prices. It makes me REAL glad I did these before the price change. Thanks for the in-depth analysis!
FlyThenFall 07-06-2005, 06:42 PM Very interesting wnderlndktty. I long for the days when it use to cost 500 credits total to get 50 shots. We have to battle price gauges on VMK too now... ::Rolls eyes::
MrGenie 07-06-2005, 06:45 PM Thanks for the detailed breakdown...isn't it fun to document something? ;)
I'm curious if the bug has been fixed where you are stuck on 48 Mickeys for a while. Did you still encounter this? I haven't seen any reports on this either way in a few weeks, but then again, I haven't been regularly browsing hidden Mickey threads...
toonysean 07-06-2005, 06:48 PM i remeber when it used for 5 film it was only 100 credits it was better then...........
wnderlndkitty 07-06-2005, 07:32 PM I just don't see the advantage to this anymore.
SpinMarty 07-06-2005, 07:35 PM I am all for the price increase. I want my Gold Oswald to to be worth something. It cheapens it if you can just go around getting all the Mickeys (like we used to be able to do) But with so many more players, many of whom just tell you exactly where the Mickey's are, I like that this is harder to obtain!

Speaking for myself  I can tell you that I had the problem where I was stuck at 48 but a few weeks ago it finally counted them all. Says I have completed the hidden Mickey quest. Problem is, I never got my gold pin or credits. Meh.
I agree though that post price hike, it doesn't really seem worth it credits wise to try for it. But it does give you something fun to do and the pins are cool, even if the only one they actually gave me was silver.
MrGenie 07-06-2005, 07:55 PM I am all for the price increase. I want my Gold Oswald to to be worth something. It cheapens it if you can just go around getting all the Mickeys (like we used to be able to do) But with so many more players, many of whom just tell you exactly where the Mickey's are, I like that this is harder to obtain!I agree that they should have made it more difficult to obtain somehow, but just making it more cost prohibitive doesn't really translate into making it more fun in my opinion. The real fun of the challenge is trying to find the hidden mickeys; to address this portion of the challenge without messing with the prices of camera/film, perhaps they could make it so the hidden mickeys move among ten or fifteen places in a room. You could still keep the same number in each room, but the different compass directions of each room could contain unique mickey locations. This would make finding them more challenging and make it harder for people to give hints. Of course, within a few hours, someone would find all of them again anyway and post a detailed FAQ which everyone would just grab and go, but still...I think that efforts to make the HM quest more challenging should be game-based, not credit-based.
toonysean 07-06-2005, 08:20 PM yup i agree with genie it's just better to find them maybe they can add more every week or month
Plane Crazy 07-06-2005, 08:53 PM Yeah...
I recently did the hidden mickey quest again and it was a waste of time. In addition to the cost of film being cheaper, I think you used to get free film at various stages. In addition, you used to be able to cancel a photo if you were not given credit for a hidden mickey. I know exactly where every hidden mickey is... yet I had to buy a few extra packs of film to obtain all 50 hidden mickeys. Needless to say, this was very frustrating and annoying.
My advice... skip the hidden mickey quest!
raspberry611 07-06-2005, 08:56 PM Thanks for the information. I am thankful that I completed the quest before the price changes!
SpinMarty 07-06-2005, 10:45 PM I still enjoyed it however! I like challenges like this one.
goofy4dizney 07-06-2005, 10:46 PM Thanks wndrlndktty for doing the math!
I could pretty much tell that it was now going to cost money before one was through with the Hidden Mickey quest, but to see the exact amount in black and white is really quite discouraging.
I could agree with the price increase on the film if they hadn't cut the roll down by half at the same time. And also stop giving out free film when you reach the marker levels.
I guess it's true that it will make the pins more valuable and harder to attain, so maybe that's what they were going for?
All I know is that I have to repeat what the others have said already -- I am so glad I got my 50 Mickeys! LOL
wnderlndkitty 07-07-2005, 06:16 AM For me the discouraging thing is, i really just like taking VMK photos, photos of me, my friends, cool images in the game. I really didn't care about the Mickey Quest to start with, except as something to do. Of course once I got all 50, then there was nothing exciting anymore.
Since the increase on price for film, i find myself taking less "fun" photos. If you look in my albums and on my walls, i like taking photos to keep my magical memories of the game. I miss Winning film from Jungle Cruise and the Mickey Quest. With the opportunity to have film as a reward, i found myself actually trying harder at the Jungle Cruise game, because then i would have more film to take photos of my friends and stuff.
I hope the programmers realize that a lot of us really just want to take photos of things that matter to us in the game, so that we can share our memories and will think about offering us more film at more reasonable costs.
AshleighPink 07-07-2005, 06:19 AM Boy, Am I glad I did this sooner! These price changes are just outrageous!! Today I was looking at a shop to see how much things were and for a Nemo chair now? Used to be 150, now 500! Outrageous but makes things have mroe value!!
GBShorts 07-07-2005, 06:21 AM I'm thinking that the VMK staff thinks that newer players who don't know it was cheaper and don't know what/when the final pin is awarded will be suckered into doing it...
and not realize exactly how much they've spent.
Granted, you get 110 credits just for showing up every day if you make the rounds...in addition to playing games and such.
dizneydesi 07-07-2005, 06:44 AM has anyone bought film at the real disney parks? now that's a huge rip-off. :pirate:
art imitates life! would anyone have thought we who were in beta testing would be longing for the "good old days" of VMK so soon? LOL :goofy:
AshleighPink 07-07-2005, 06:58 AM Our last Family trip to Disneyland was the day after christmas. Us four in my family went then all my cousins, aunts, and uncles. 13 of us!! It was very costly. I remember one part that made me mad then but I laugh about it now. My little brother is known as the Churro dude when we all go. His record is 17 churros in 3 days. We stop at a churro stand. All 13 of us. Some people want 2 some don't want any. It ended up being around 12 churros. Well we had to wait a while because not that many churros were avaliable and they had to bake them. But hey, they were fresh!! Finally 15 minutes later we were back on our way to Thunder Mountain! There about a little bit from the ride was this stand where they sell like chicken or something on a leg. Of course many adults wanted some and some of the teens who know what regular food is got it. ( Including myself, so I couldn't get mad for that. ) Finally we were in line with out fast pass's it was still a little whiles wait. Then my little cousin who's 8 or so spots a stand where they sell mcdonalds fries. ( Man I love those! ) We want 6 fries...So me and the little kids are off to the stand! We come back almost on the ride. We had to demolish those fries quick and boy did we do it! Now I look back at it and laugh. There is so many more stories that I laugh about now. :)
SpinMarty 07-07-2005, 07:32 AM We stop at a churro stand.
All praise the holy churro. Next time you walk by a churro cart you must bow to it. :-)
My friends and I all did that to every churro stand last summer LOL
AshleighPink 07-07-2005, 07:33 AM LOL. I know some people I was with would be up to it!
animalover66 07-26-2005, 04:58 AM I have 49 hidden Mickeys and just took number 50, but it didn't record it! I took it 2 more times to be sure. I see the hidden Mickey glowing, but it doesn't show up in my record. I don't want to keep wasting credits taking the same picture over and over. Is there someone I can report this to that will correct it or are we out of luck?

the mickey that you're taking might not be the one that wasn't recorded.look through the details of what pictures you've taken, and try to find an irregularity or something. good luck!
wombat 07-26-2005, 02:05 PM This is my first post here after lurking for about a month. I agree the cost is much higher now and almost not worth the effort, but I did it anyway. I long for the days when you could just snap photos and not save them to avoid being charged. As far as the 48 or 49 Mickeys when you think you have them all, I was missing one and took me forever to finally get it. This was before they gave us the "Journal" that showed which ones you have found. I did not realize that finding them and taking pictures was not enough, and that the gold Mickey icon had to appear in your photo for it to register. Took me about 2 days to finally get all 50 once I found which one was not registering.
I hope when the open the next two lands they continue to hide Mickeys. They could hide another 25 and make 75 a Platinum pin for this.
shiregirl 07-26-2005, 04:16 PM I hope when the open the next two lands they continue to hide Mickeys. They could hide another 25 and make 75 a Platinum pin for this.
That would be an expensive pin! It would cost 1000 credits in film to get it. That being said, I hope they do it too. (The more new stuff to do in VMk the better) :) And.. I think they might... On the Insider Tour I went on at Disneyland they mentioned that there may be more mickeys added in the future.
PixelProphet 07-26-2005, 04:32 PM I see why they did it, it is to make it a longer quest not one that you can start and complete in one day, it makes you have to go play other games and earn credits in order to make the experience last longer.
NASAMan 08-01-2005, 01:46 PM I'd certainly like to see the addition of a digital camera, priced around 2000 credits, that takes unlimited pictures. the cost of the quest would be about the same, but afterwords you cold take up to a certain number of images to post in you album or on the wall. Maybe every 100 images you need to buy 40 credit batteries to keep it going?!
carlyiscoolio 08-01-2005, 02:44 PM LOL, extra cameras. But yes, I too have thought of this when I took a shower this morning. Well, it is highly expensive now, especially with all these whacked out prices. It makes me REAL glad I did these before the price change. Thanks for the in-depth analysis!
i did it to before the price change. back then, you could get 10 film instead of five and the photo albums were 150 credit instead of 100
cypherx 08-11-2005, 07:25 AM Is this not the year 2005? Are we not playing a game that is on the INTERNET? Why is it that we must buy "FILM"? Why can't we buy a VMK Digital Camera? And when was the last time that you bought film with only 5 exposures? Okay, I'm only ranting but doesn't it make you say, "HMMMM"?
canadian 08-11-2005, 01:43 PM I did the Hidden Mickey Quest about a week ago with another character. It seems the Explorer's Tent room was still buggy. When I took the jeep picture it registered the waterfall. Then I took the waterfall and it didn't credit (no mickey in the corner). Then I took the jeep and it gave an error (something like unknown picture). Then I took the waterfall again and it credited me with the picture.
If you are having problems with these 2 pictures (your log shows one but not the other) try retaking the one it says you have. If that doesn't work, take the other one again and then go back to the first. Eventually it should credit you with both.

ClubDisCM 12-19-2005, 07:33 AM You have to buy it from VMK Central.
NASAMan 12-19-2005, 11:13 AM where did you get all the film? can u give me some?
Welcome to the Forum Magrooder! It seems while searching for info on the new Hidden Mickey Quest, you stumbled on a very old thread. If the thread is so old and you are not adding any new information to advance that thread, it is best to start a new one.
To buy a camera and film go to VMK Central on Main Street in the game. There, by clicking on the Pirates poster on the left ("Dead Men take no Pictures") and you will open the shopping screen to buy Camera and Film, Film, and Photo Album. You do NOT need to return here to buy more film, just click your shop button. Film and camera can NOT be traded.
Now, to add to this thread to make it current: Is the Reward worth the cost. When Wnderlndkitty started this thread at the beginning of July, it was right after the game officially opened. During Beta testing, film was cheap, and you could choose to save the picture or delete it without effecting your film total. That meant you could just click all over the screen until you got a picture with a Mickey, and then save and only use one piece of film. Wnderlndkitty did a good job describing how much the price of film increased after Beta testing. And the conclusion was true then - worth the cost? Probably not.
But then, later that month, an extra prize was added: a certificate to do the VIP Insider Tour at DL or MK. Since this prize was also awarded for completing all three (or four, depending) In-Park Quests, this prize enabled you to sign up first thing for the tour, which often filled up quickly. Worth it? If you were going to the park (which is the prurpose of the game - to get you to the parks!) it would be. If not, well, you still have pins.
Today, the tours seem to be gone (maybe not for good) so the prize for finding all fifty Hidden Mickeys is a certificate redeemable for a Gold Collection card. This card is not given out anymore with the Quest Pack you get for doing all the Quests (all the cards you would have gotten on the tour). This makes the Gold Collection even rarer in the game. Worth it? Absolutely, but again only if you go to the parks.
Sorry this is so long winded, but I hope it helps many of the new players who are joining the game.
Always Expect the Unexpected!
Surprise is Magic!
