Those of us out west have to pack it in at such an early time, I often wish I had a few more hours of play. What does everyone think? What could be done about it? Maybe do an adults only day on VMK. Close the park at 5 pm and reopen for adults only.

And alot of staff are probably running eastern time, which explains why they had to close early a while back when there were storms on the east coast.

Thats why I say an adults only day. Yes it would be tough, to keep the kids out, but you did have to enter your birthday when you joined. So I am sure they could set something up. And before anyone goes saying thats not fair to the kids they can do the same thing with kids.

I think thats a really really bad idea. What is to stop kids from creating accounts with adult birthdays? what would make it so adult-only?

Staff need sleep like all of us. I think it is good that vmk closes at a certain time. If it had late hours, I would never get a good night sleep.

it was only a thought, and idea since the topic came up about the hours... but if VMK started seeing a bunch of "Guest" accounts poping up at once right before the night they picked, I am sure they can check up on those accounts.

This would not only be impossible but unrealistic because many folks just plain lied about their birthday on VMK (like some here on the forums even.)

people would just lie about their age to be on later, plus the staff need time to test, no need to worry about it.

It would only require adding another shift of staff members. It is the responsibility of the parents to make sure that their kids are not online, playing games, or in other way shirking their chores, family duties, meals, work, and/or school work. There is no way for VMK to keeps kids off at certain hours and it is not their responsibility. Kid who cannot get into VMK are elsewhere on the internet.

I want longer hours so I can do some stuff without lots of people as I barely got 20 minutes online out of 4 hours I tried to get onto the site.

I agree with SweepHunter, that is why I posted the message, which somehow has taken a different turn. I understand the need for supervision for the littlest ones, but I would venture a guess that at least half of the players on VMK are in thier teens or older. Sweep is right, Parents are responsible for supervising, not VMK! However, I suspect the issue of opperating hours has alot to do with legalities, Disney being sued by a family who is not supervising a child who somehow becomes a victim of crime while on VMK. I would never place blame with VMK, but with juries today anything might happen. I cannot fault them at all, but I can, and still do, want more hours! :) VMK is still very new and I don't think they anticipated the adult community as a large consumer of VMK. I myself am mesmerized by it, a false feeling of being in the park when I can't be, in a weird way. Yes, I guess it would be hard to distinguish between adult and kid. I am sure there are staff members somewhere that wouldn't mind the late hours. I myself am a night owl. Well, we'll see I guess.

VMK has hours for a reason--so it can be monitored. You say that if the kids are not on, then things will be different. I disaggree with that. Being a community leader I have had to deal with many problems and most of those concerned adults. You can tell an adult from a kid on line in just how well they carrier on a conversation. I would love to have VMK on all the time but realistically it shouldn't be done. You also said about hiring new staff. If you start hiring new staff, then they will have to be paid and the money will have to come from somewhere. So, that means VMK will be a charge-to-play game. Myself, I like it just the way it is.

In reference to an above message. Nighttime hours would find far fewer players online hence the need for supervisory staff would be quite low. I would like to think the players can help in this respect by keeping an eye out on chat. I've reported 6 or so players since becoming a VMK aficionado, :h-biggrin and just out of habit keep an eye on most of what I see. With member help, and a few staff I don't see any reasons why extended hours could not be accomplished, safely!
Another idea just occured to me. What about a monthly fee for adults who want extended hours? This would solve many if not all issues related to unsupervised children in VMK. One concern, Disneys a business, and I would not want to implement a pay structure and have it transform into an "all players pay on VMK" situation. VMK should always be free for children. However, those who want to play into the night having an option to pay $5 a month for the privilage sounds like a sound venture to me! :h-biggrin :mickey2: :mickeymo: :wave2:

Adult, for legal purposes, equates to eighteen years old. Though you may be younger than this, it does not imply your ability to deal with unsafe situations on VMK is in question. That being said, there are 5 year olds who could probably handle VMK without supervision, and there are eighteen year olds who cannot! :h-smile: We are not created equaly when it comes to vulnerability which is why a need for protective staff exists. Some children are very savvy, some are not. All players regardless of age should keep an eye out for anything unusual on VMK, and don't hesitate to report the situation. :wave2:

Though staff has set aside closing for fixing bugs and such, they seem to take alot of time suring the day to do just that. Like when VMK closed the second day on the maze event. They could have done that while it was closed...

Well, without staff on there would be more troublesome things, such as worse are you taken scenerios. I mean, anyone could fake a signature, and send it in. teenagers would run wild, and kids too, asking people if they are taken. Complete chaos. I think the hours it is open is enough for all of us :P If you want more then perhaps 2 hours, and are an adult...well, don't you have better things to do? I mean work is longer or as long as school normally, dinner, and other stuff. If you have more than 3 hours or so a day for VMK--I think its enough, time to get a hobby or something else to do ;)

Wow late night on VMK? Its all I can do to stay up until 1:00 am to close down the virtual kingdom. It would be impossible to have adult only, or kid only days. Excluding anyone on vmk is always a bad idea, remember we are playing in a world where we are all the same. Yes, I do wish we could play at all hours what a woot it would be. I've already expressed my views on the hours before, so I'll just quote myself and be done with it.

Unlike many who play VMK, the Cast Members have a life. The Cast Members have families and other things they'd rather do than spend all twenty-four hours of the day monitering VMK. Also, nobody would ever get off, so nobody could ever get on when there are so many online.

Our times are perfect. 9 AM to 12 AM is just fine by me! Even so, VMK causes me to stay up later than I need to sometimes.

If VMK was open twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, three-hundred-sixty-five days a year, people would get bored of it. If people get bored, they stop playing. People stop playing, park attendance goes down. Park attendance goes down, profits go down. That's a simple fact of life. If you spend too much time doing the same thing, you will get bored eventually. That's all there is to it. When I first began playing VMK, I was obsessed. I played every single possible moment. Then, I started getting bored with it and took a break from it. After a few days, I began playing again, but very little. VMK had become boring for me. I just wasn't interested. Eventually, after taking a break, and my mom making me get on to get my credits every day, I started playing again. I learned my lesson, and you should learn it, too, so you don't have to learn the hard way.

The simple thing you need to know is this:
Use everything in moderation.

I play when I want to, for however long I can/want. When I want to stop, I stop. If I don't feel like talking to anyone, I don't get on, or just get on as one of my extra characters and leave Jungle Cruise running.

Indeed, I am a VMK add-duck, but the obsession is not nearly as bad. Besides, my obsessive-compulsiveness hates VMK. And these forums. You know why? The horrible lack of proper grammar and spelling. It drives me up the wall, but that's an entirely different discussion.

Which brings me to the comments made by the younger, very intelligent patrons of this thread. You are correct in all you stated. To much of anything is a bad thing, Self control, need for sleep versus staring down a screen, etc. I agree with these opinions wholeheartedly, but, and this is a huge but! FREEDOM! Everyone can have opinions, everyone can sneer at those who spend excessive amounts of time on VMK, admonish those who do as having no backbone, etc. You may voice whatever is on your mind, but to go beyond that is protecting me from myself hence taking away my liberty as a free person in the USA. I don't mean to get on a soapbox here, but as of late our freedom is becoming more and more restricted by people with opinions who go beyond the point of simply having one! I agree, some do spend far to much time on VMK, that is my opinion. Do I think VMK should continue the hours as they stand to protect that player and his/her obsession, no! For a business to succeed it must cater to it's clientele, and this particular consumer needs later hours for variuos reasons. When I posted this, it didn't dawn on me eastern players must wait until 10am for a bit of fun. This would not be acceptable if I were from the east, and I would voice an opinion about that as well. :h-wink: If I am not mistaken, some of the staff work from home. Hiring a few more employees who like to work late hours, or in the case of our eastern players, early, whould not put a hardship on any of the current staff.
My point, as it has always been, there are no reasons VMK's hours cannot be extended or the site opperate 24/7 while retaining safety exactly as it is. Except one! MONEY! Believe me, if VMK finds it is in their best interest to extend the hours, they will do so! If a large section of playership is in fact adult, as i believe it to be, those extended hours may see the light of day yet! Now, I just hope my opinion is correct. lol :h-biggrin

Yeah, my eyesight has turned green, and I am becoming a 'Creature of the Night.' I guess unlike Toontown which is open 24/7, it is moderated more carefully and the moderators need some sleep. And so do I. ;)

That's true so the west coast gets as much time, and I do not think they should open 24/7 or later hours, it's fine the way it is. Think about it, what if you were a moderator, would u like to stay awake a longer time just to watch VMK? I wouldn't so I think VMK is just fine.

I still do think that they are still focusing on other things at the moment. I mean, they are reaching 1 million guests, and 3000 on at a time! I think they are trying to focus on possibly updating their server so they can control it all :) I know many of us were more worried about that :D

No, this is a bad bad idea! It is already bad that some days I am staying up to 1:00am (EDT), so making it later would be worse!!!! :-)

I know I will sound stupid, as if I havnt read all of these posts...but here goes:

Although people need sleep, and moderation needs to be done, how come the site is run mostly on West Coast times. There is a Disney Park on most continents, and therefore in most timezones. (Here comes the bad idea) This would mean VMK would no longer be free, but putting up servers on each continent with moderators there would make this game multinational. I'm not fond of having to wait til 3pm for it to open and then not being able to be awake for closing time at FIVE AM!!

If there were, say, a server on the west coast, one on the east, one in Europe, and one in Japan with moderators and testers in those countries, sure it would cost money but then it would mean ALL areas would open from 7am to 10pm...due to having seperate servers each with the program on it. (I could be talking a load of junk there)

That would solve all the moaning, from Brits because we have to wait EIGHT hours more than people in Cali, from New Yorkers cause they have to wait a measly three hours more...and most probably from any players anywhere else in the world. But then we'd have threads here called "OMGZ Why is teh VMK not freebee?". It's a solution but it comes with its own problems...

So, stick with it as it is, or be prepared to pay for using VMK cause I dont think they'd install servers in other countries, pay for new staff and training, and then turn round and say "Yeah, we're kind of running near empty on funds, so we can't update everywhere...we're only doing it this way to keep it free." no, they'd turn round and politely say "We apologise but in order to keep the servers running we ask that you all pay for x number of months usage when you sign up." Then it would kind of turn into Habbo, where credits are money.

Keep it as it is. I can cope with the opening time, perfect for when I get back from school...but the closing time means I can't do anything then. Oh well. I can cope with an EIGHT HOUR difference, so I don't see why people on the East Coast are complaining about 3 hours.

I often wish that VMK was open later, especially since I often get off work at 11:30 Central which is a half hour before closing. However I can understand the need of the staff to take a break and it makes the time I get to play a little more valuable. Plus, if VMK never closed, I might not ever sleep.:D

Nope, I do spend far to much time on VMK, but I have the time now, in a few weeks I won't, so will have no say in the matter. lol If VMK were open 24/7 there would certainly be problems for some controling how much time they spend playing a game, but this applies to everything in life. Are we to control this for them? I hope to heck not! It's none of my business what you or anyone else does with their time. It is not for me to say, nor is it for anyone else to say! Vmk should have extended hours just for the fact it is becoming the online game of choice around the world, and as it becomes mature, I think we will see those extended hours. I like one of the last posts about limiting usage to those of a certain age beyond certain hours. Not sure how this would work, and it's not fool-proof, but nothing these days is! lol Kids that find a way around the rules already know far more than they should so I don't think that is a major concern for VMK, or at least it shouldn't be.

i wish the VMK gaming hours will be extended. i live in the Philippines (belonging to the same time zone with HongKong and Singapore) VMK opens at 10pm to 1pm. that makes 12 hours advance from the EST time of U.S... so obviously almost half the time that VMK is open is sleeping hours. the time is just not so good for me and other asians, most especially if school is in the morning.

i wish the VMK gaming hours will be extended. i live in the Philippines (belonging to the same time zone with HongKong and Singapore) VMK opens at 10pm to 1pm. that makes 12 hours advance from the EST time of U.S... so obviously almost half the time that VMK is open is sleeping hours. the time is just not so good for me and other asians, most especially if school is in the morning.


True, but to all the people in America that have long times, that would mean VMK would have MORE problems than it already does because they would have to run VMK longer and make sure it's running right. Plus adults that play this game (including teens, probably) would never get sleep if it was always open. I think they were right to have times to close and open.

Yes, I must admit, I am glad they have opening and closing hours just like the real parks. We need sleep. I will admit, there have been a few nights I would have played all night. Yes, I wish it were open right now. I need credits for all of the new costumes coming! But, it's probably best that it is not open. I do have a few things I'd like to get done today.....and sometimes I can be bad about policing myself!!!!

I would love to see VMK open longer!! If they would hire staff in Europe i would definitly help to see it open earlier!!!

Disney, longer hours means more playing time and the longer that people are thinking "Disney". The more they have Disney on the mind, the more they are likely to buy MORE Disney items!!!

think i will get in at 14? Hope so but is does not bother me coz i live in uk so when its opening time over there its 3pm over here! And when its time for bed like at 10.30pm over here its only just began! :S

VMK staff need some time off you know lol. The staff are human to, and do requior sleep.

I just thought of something. After VMK closes, we can have Pleasure Island. :) We can have the Adventurers Club and the dance clubs and more. I know it would be almost impossible, but it would be fun!

And i still say that they should have staff outside the US as well.

And we can have Different Character Breakfasts in the morning before VMK. :) ( now i am just throwing out odd ideas)
