View Full Version : Money Talks! How much have you spent on VMK?
Caterpillar AEIOU 04-09-2008, 05:45 PM Ok, I admit, my family is just the kind of people that Disney loves, we spend money on VMK promotions.
I added it all up, and I feel sick about it.
If VMK were to stay open, I would have NO PROBLEM continuing to drop money though.
As a Cast Member I could have had a 50% discount of hotel rooms, But we wanted the Stitch hats, so I spent full price 3 different times to book the hotel package. I actually cancelled a 4th trip when they retired the hats.
I still went, just not in a Disney Owned Hotel.
Total $6000.00
Every single time we went to the parks , both WDW and DLR, we bought Magic tricks, t-shirts, candy, hats , pins etc. Just to get the Gift Cards from VMK! I have plenty of that stuff, We just wanteed the cards!
Since the pirate VMK pins came out, we Have bought over 100 sets at $15.00 each. I stopped collecting real disney pins years ago. You guessed it we did it for the VMK items.
And of course I have purchases counless numbers of DVD's just to get those rewards. I have 1000 DMR points just sitting in my account right now.
I would guess that I have close to $10.000.00 invested. I am not kidding!
I have 2 shoe boxes full of VMK cards to show for it.
Our Annual passes expired in October, and this is the longest time period in 20 years that I have not been to a Disney Park. We were just talking about getting passes for the family again this Summer, Unless VMK is back, I really don't have a reason.
Like I said, I have no problem to contine spending money on VMK.
If they close I am sure that Webkinz will love having my money. My daughter just started that site in September, and I am not having any trouble finding ways to spend money there either
MLKnCookies 04-09-2008, 05:50 PM $0.00
No pins, no movie rewards, no special trips to WDW.
funny_ryry 04-09-2008, 06:01 PM I would say wow $80 on movie rewards!
Jacques 04-09-2008, 06:02 PM I'll admit that I bought 2 full pin sets, as well as a few items to get the Park exclusive cards. But in all honesty, after they pulled VMK from the Park, I let my annual pass expire. I didn't have the pass exclusively to play VMK in Park, but it was a nice bonus.
I also bought a few movies and used the rewards points for VMK items. But I never bought the movies purely for that purpose. They are all movies I would have purchased regardless.
Lilligirl 04-09-2008, 06:15 PM I spent about $100 on Movie Rewards.
My cousins spent $25,000 for stich hats, pirate q pin sets, and other useless junk.
Accountant 04-09-2008, 06:21 PM Im like Jacques. I rarely spent a lot of extra money just for VMK. I made about 12 trips over to Disneyland in 3 years and one trip to WDW. I did VMK stuff and met VMK friends but I would have gone with out VMK. I bought baseball hats for my grand kids and got VMK gold mickey hat cards but I would have bought them anyway. I missed out on getting stitch because I had an annual pass and refused to pay the extra just to get a stitch hat.
I also got inferno and movie set from the rewards but you know I didnt spend a lot of money getting them. I got points going to see movies at the theater but I would have gone anyway.
I would love to say VMK made money off me but I would have enjoyed everything Disney with or with out it. I think I agree with Jacques it gave me extra value but it didnt force me to spend money to have fun in game. Now I dont want to be the one to stop all the effort to save VMK. Im as much as the next guy wanting it to continue, I just am speaking from my real life experiences. I feel bad for those who spent thousands as you did.
I guess for me VMK gave me some real life freindships.
wdmountie 04-09-2008, 06:30 PM I have spent close to $100 on Disney Movie Rewards (plus $200-300 on other dvd's not in those rewards)
$600 for an Annual Pass to get in the park for the in park quests (and yes I actually did visit just for the quest items) and more stuff :)
If I knew about vmk earlier, I probably would have spent money on getting some of those Stitch cards.
Was going to buy the pins from the cards next month, but I guess that would be a waste now.
Being that I can hear fireworks from WDW every night, my family and I also eat at the hotels at least twice a month (if not more). And once a year we spend a night over at the parks just for fun.
Over all, Disney has gained plenty of profit from me and my family over the years. VMK was even a part of that profit. So they were making money on VMK, just I guess not enough to fill their fat pockets. :(
AcePirateDan 04-09-2008, 06:52 PM I have never bought anything purposly for VMK,
So here is my balence PLUS taxes = $0.00
Penguinz 04-09-2008, 06:53 PM Around 20 dollars.
I spent it on the Box Pin Set when I was trying to get a Bird Hat; didn't go so well. ^.^
FabMariah 04-09-2008, 08:11 PM lets see here....
WDW Vacation.... TWICE=800 (we stayed with family, not disney hotels)
Movie Rewards.... INFERNO AND THEATRE=180
Pin Sets...........................................=42
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
making a grand total of...................1022$
Tris-Remix 04-09-2008, 08:14 PM I never bought any vmk-related real lfie items, so im at a total of
$0.00
Centurey 04-09-2008, 08:17 PM DMR.
75$, at the most. not even for VMK.
EtnaGreen 04-09-2008, 08:23 PM We went to WDW, but we would have gone regardless of vmk. We spent ten dollars a day during two trips for two rooms for vmk. Which adds up to alot. I bought a vmk shirt, my brother and I both got a box pin set from vmk for easter. And we got dvd's which we would have gotten anyway...
AceCaptainWayne 04-09-2008, 08:40 PM I dread to think what VMK has cost our family. I am 99% certain more than anyone else on the forums. All 3 of us(Myself, StitchMad and DCLmad) have been playing since August 05. Since starting playing VMK we have done 7 trips to WDW and 2 to DLR. Including AP's each year, Pirate pins, Food spent in parks etc.
I know all the money we have spent has not gone to Disney and some of the trips to WDW we would have done anyway but we would not have visited DLR and not have been to WDW 7 times or bought AP's.
9 trips to Disney might not sound much but when you consider an average trip to Disney for us costs over $10,000 from the UK we have spent in excess of $100,000 in the past 3 years
We all have very rich characters in VMK and it might be a free game but Disney have earned a lot of money from us to to fund them. I would at least like the option to play the game for a fee rather than flicking a switch and losing everything.
TopazR 04-09-2008, 09:13 PM I'd say my family's monetary investment would probably be around the $60 mark. Four boxes of the pirate pins. Well actually a little less than that as two of the boxes were bought with our friends AP discount. Oh wait - no that's wrong. Back when Pooh's Corner was still giving the penny presses someone usually bought a 50 cent lollipop or two, occasionally a few other candy items. It could be argued though that some of those we'd have bought anyway. Same with the magic shop. Someone or another almost always ends up stopping in there and buying something at least once per trip. Never bought any hats or shirts, just asked nicely and sometimes they gave the card, sometimes they didn't. So all in all over 8-10 trips to DLR since VMK opened we've maybe spent $60-$100 specifically on VMK. It's really hard for me to say though as any VMK stuff has just been "icing on the cake" so to speak for any DLR trip we have taken.
TinkTaylor 04-09-2008, 10:42 PM The Same As The Maker As This Thread Said Is About What I Spent To And I Am A Cast Member Too Its Ridiculous!
Heh... Not A Cast Member I Meant To Say PassHolder But It's Still Insane On How Much Money We All Put Into This LOVLEY ;) Game That Is Now Closing :(
Mintypal 04-09-2008, 10:46 PM 7,000 for going to disney 2 times and buying alot of stuff
Even I spent money
You Should sue!!!
BaseballStarz 04-09-2008, 11:18 PM 20$
That's all it was DMR rewards though. It was my gift card money as well and I didn't like anything else.
bravejacob 04-09-2008, 11:19 PM No wait every one who spent money on vmk should sue that might, might bring vmk back it is posible but not likely hey but at least you will have money lol
Probably around $5000.
Now all of that money is gone
2starTagregory 04-10-2008, 01:02 AM At the most: 10000 like you
Extras 04-10-2008, 01:07 AM DMR I used from Christmas gift DVDs.
A trip to DLR w/ hotel park hopper and quests done: a little over 200-300$ for just me.
Caterpillar AEIOU 04-10-2008, 01:20 AM My point is not the money that I spent, but WHY I spent it. My family has choices on where to spend our Vacation budget. If I had even a hint that VMK were closing with a certain time frame, I would have gone some where else on at least 3 of my 4 trips.
If there would have been a LIMITED TIME only disclaimer on VMK's homepage, I would not have spent one penny of that money.
This has just left a bitter taste for anything Disney with my family.That is saying a lot, Both My husband and I worked there for 15 years. So they have lost a very "brand loyal" family.
My daugher just told me that she would rather have Sea World Annual Passes this year. So we are getting Universal Studios Hollywood ( they are opening a Simpson's ride) AP's and Sea World instead, So at least VMK made the announcement before I dropped another $1100.00 on AP's, and another $1800.00 on a 4 day trip. We are now spending a week in San Deigo for less than that price! So Goodbye Disney, I am taking my Family and my Money with me!
I purchased my last required Movie from the Disney Movie Club, and since I don't need the rewards for VMK anymore, I am cancelling that membership today!
I have lost 99% interest in this game now. I am logging on once in awhile to use my TDM magic pin, just on the off chance that it might continue.
2starTagregory 04-10-2008, 01:22 AM My parents let me buy EVERYTHING from disney
Soufriere_Hills 04-10-2008, 01:30 AM about $275 for me
aerogirl0412 04-10-2008, 01:30 AM me.. a lot more than i can count up i have been to disney exactly 47 times in the past since 2005 when vmk first opened JUST for the vmk cards. I also was kinda crazy about buying things on ebay... yes i spent a good 10,000 on just ebay alone... i also bought hundreds of pin sets for the cards various candies and some random tems just for more cards
Caterpillar AEIOU 04-10-2008, 01:33 AM I see your point. LOL
What I am saying is, that this is a Bad Business choice for Disney . They could at least try a pay version for 6 months to see if it would work.
The other 2 pay sites started from scratch, VMK already has a built in fan base.
We have proven that we would pay to support VMK.
PrincessAnnO 04-10-2008, 01:47 AM AEIOU---
I'm not as lucky as you. I had high hopes that VMK would continue and make it back to the parks...I just renewed our Annual Passes. I've renewed twice and VMK is what gave me the extra push to do it. VMK was my deciding factor in updating my Disney VHS collection to DVDs. I was logging on to put in my Aristocats code when I stopped here first and read about the VMK rewards being pulled. So much for finally having a Stitch hat (even if it were going to be red). At least I got the window and inferno.
Bought a hat and a number of items in the candy shop for the cards. Went to the parks a bit more often than I would have otherwise and bought either lunch, dinner, or both each time--snacks too (and we know that's where Disney's REAL money comes from when it has to do with the parks). Was in the process of pulling together funds and working with a couple of great pals on here to make it to DLR just about when stitch cards were pulled. While I have always wanted to go to DLR, it would have been about two years earlier than i would have otherwise...didn't end up booking that trip.
So, while I did not directly spend any money for VMK, it was the extra push I needed each time. Yes, I did spend money I would not have at Disney so I could get the cards etc...(oh, and when the tours were happening, you bet your bootie that I went just about as often as I could make it there...almost forgot about that...).
Yep, I think this is not only a bad PR move, VMK is also something that I believe could have paid for itself (and did, just indirectly). I have never paid to play an on-line game and in the past could not have imagined doing so. I hate to say it but I'd happily pay $10 a month to keep VMK alive for the familiy.
tiedyenaj 04-10-2008, 03:22 AM 20.00 $ for a vmk T-shirt from zazzle with tiedyegirl on the back
Sessho 04-10-2008, 03:54 AM Since May of 2005, I have been playing VMK and I think that my grand total would have $0.00.
