Sounds to me like Disney does not want the bad publicity. But since when will a news network not report a story without speaking to both sides? All they have to do is say Disney was contacted and refused to comment. I am sure they are getting their legal department involved. Will still have CNN on just in case.

How do you know its canceled? Well i will just have to watch the news anyway. CNN at 12 p.m PST. If it's on there. Well...

The thing is, Disney knows now that there is some interest in keeping the game. The simple fact that CNN has even contacted them about this should let them know that people want to keep it going in some form or other.

Think about it: CNN, an international news syndicate, has contacted Disney to ask them questions about a free online game that they are cancelling. This alone should raise some eyebrows at Disney Corporate. Even if they never do return the calls or make any kind of statement whatsoever to CNN, the simple fact that contact was made at all makes a statement all on it's own.

Ah!!! The typical corporate response just don't answer the phone :) As madamecat stated once they received the call I am certain disney started talking with their legal team. This is pretty much a typical reponse by corporations just so that the wrong person doesn't say the wrong thing. Seen this one too many times within the corporate environment...

I found this quote from Dave "Dizney" Lloyd -- Travel Channel Disney Fan

Well, here is what I've found out from my limited sources. They reflect mostly opinion, but from some who know better than I.

From what I've understood, the decision to close VMK was reached back in the summer/late fall and included the closure of the VMK shops at the parks. There was some objection which resulted in the last quarters barrage of additions to the game. This decision occurred during a time of "turnover" at Disney Internet - which makes me wonder if the Yavn of today is also the Yavn of a few months ago (just a question I've been wondering about for the last few days). My sources say this was a decision based on the bottom line - and the plan was that money was to be thrown at the new Pirates game (which was about to go golden around the same time as the park shops began to close). From what I understand, there has been a lot of internal battles over this, including a plan to launch a pay VMK site, but at this point the decision is to close VMK down for good. In all probability, the top brass at Disney was informed about this decision, but at arms length as far as the decision-making of VMK’s future was concerned.

I also have another secondary conclusion based on my background work with the media: The news companies (local and national) care little about the closure of an online video game. At best, this is a HI (human interest) story, but a weak one at that. CNN or Fox is too busy covering the presidential race, the death of an Al-Qaeda leader, and the economy to work in this story which would have connectivity to so few. Let's face it - VMK is important to us, but not the masses.

The only exception that comes to mind is the online Disney news sites. I’m wondering if any high profile non-Disney Disney site will do an investigative story on this? Where is Jim Hill or Al Lutz on this story? Sometimes their stories can get a rise out of Disney corporate. I’d suggest we approach them to lift up our cause.

Finally, to me, there’s another potential answer to our need to proactively vent. Since the media doesn't care about VMK’s demise, possibly the decision-makers do. Bob Iger and John Lasseter I believe could be persuaded to care about this place where the die-hard fans and imprintable children reside in an on-going advertisement for Disney Parks and Disney media. So far, I've found them both to be open and concerned about those things that will link people to the brand, and, if there is a potential financial gain (such as a pay VMK site), they just might be swayed. I would encourage that if there be any letter-writing, that the communications go directly to the corporate heads who actually have some say-so in what happens and have initially demonstrated that they care what Disney fanatics think. I would keep the communications short, pointed, and sweet (a spoon-full of sugar...).

Remember, the head leads the body. I'd suggest we go to the top. Just my 2 cents.

I would not pay for a VMK like this one. It would have to make some big changes before I would invest any more time or money. One important feature would be a real feeback section where people can really voice their opinions of the game and content and the staff.

Wow...Some of you people are actually reporting VMK's closing to news channels? Admirable, if not a bit wacky and ill-justified, I suppose. After all, Disney is perfectly justified in closing down VMK. It's their game, it's free, and they have every right to close it whenever they want. You're all making it seem like they've broken some secret law, and deserve to have the media attacking them for closing a game they have every right to close.

We love VMK. Sure it's sad to see it end. But, in my opinion, we should all just pack up and move on, instead of going to news channels about how Disney is so terrible for ending a free online game that they created and are now ending. They've acted just as every rich, powerful, influential company would have. They lied to us, sure, but did we actually expect them to be completely honest to us? Because truth is, nobody's completely honest, and of course VMK was just a way to promote Disney and earn them more money.

Now they've decided it's purpose has been served and that's all there is to it.
Just my opinion though. You all do whatever you want to.
I wish you the best of luck.

Again I am amazed at how much work everyone on here is doing to keep it open and to be with our friends. I thank you guys tons for trying, anything I can do to help?

VMK is also a community in the end. STAFF make money off this game and probably have people to provide for. Where will they move on to when they can't pay bills? So I've disagreed with all of your posts similar to this. Discussion ended.

It is Disney's right to shut down vmk. There is no doubt about that. It's not that Disney is in the wrong but I think the players are just trying to get them to reconsider this decision. It is also the players right to voice their opinion and try to save a game they love. By taking these actions the players are showing Disney how much VMK really is an important game to continue to support. I find it amazing that the players are taking this much initiative to try and save this game! Great job guys! Keep up the good work!

We can do this! Saving VMK is more important then anything to me! So what if a few people think it's over dramatic! We're all FAMILY here, and I will NOT lose my friends so easily! Go ahead, call me dumb and insane, but I don't care! Disney only cares about MONEY now! What would Walt do? We are DOING what Walt would do, what Walt would want! He wanted us to be happy no matter what, and this is a way to do it! Who's with me!

I will NOT just let VMK close! go ahead, call me dramatic! Call me OVER dramatic i don't care! But what i DO know is that i will not let VMK be pushed aside like chores on a summer day! Think of this, what would Walt do? If he were still here, do u think he would do something so dumb that we would call news stations? NO!!!! He would be fighting WITH us! Fight for Walt! Fight for ourselves! AND FIGHT FOR VMK!!!!!

Ok I cant find that article but I found this released 03/11/08

Disney Predicts $1B in Online Revenue for 2008
Virtual worlds are only a part of the equation, but Disney CEO Bob Iger is predicting that the company will see $1 billion in online revenue this coming year, up from a predicted $700 million for fiscal 2007. The sources include ads shown on ESPN, ABC.com, downloads of music and movies, but also subscriptions to online games and e-commerce that's unrelated to the physical parks. Disney has a host of virtual worlds and online games supported by advertising or subscriptions, and it's looking for more, but it'd be interesting to know where if it counts toys tied to its worlds as a part of online revenue or if, like Hasbro, it looks at a site as non-revenue-generating if all it does is drive the purchase of toys.

Plus the adults who watch that show and see how hard these kids fight for VMK they would be touched and they may join in and help? I mean it's just an idea and they may be owned by ABC... I'm not to sure on that.

Oh and to the people who are posting give up. I understand that yall may be lazy and not want to keep a good thing going but please stop infesting our help boards with that. There is a rant board and that is where yall can go and rant on and on all yall want. But this is a VMK savers board and any board that is trying to save VMK is one of those boards and we will not give up no matter what even if we have to go over crazy obstacles justt to save it. I can possibly seeing a news story on this, but Oprah? That is going a little far, there is not an hours worth of stuff they could do, and furthermore, that is not the correct audience. Most of all, it is aired on ABC, which is a parent company of Disney, and they would not badly publicize themselves.

Okay... I just heard that vmk is officialy closing May 21st, 2008. ]: This stinks!! Here is something I read by Yavn.

It was a promotion that celebrated Disney 50yrs

As many of you know, Virtual Magic Kingdom was created and launched back in 2005 as part of the Disneyland 50th Anniversary Celebration. VMK exceeded expectations in terms of performance, and as a result we extended the promotion (that is, VMK, the game) well beyond the 50th Celebration.

Eventually though, all promotions must come to an end, so I'm announcing today that on May 21, 2008, VMK will open our virtual gates for the last time. You read that right: VMK was never intended to last forever – we'll close the game for good at the end of day on May 21st, 2008.

This is not an April Fool's joke.

Now we understand this news may be upsetting to you but let me explain. Again, VMK was launched as part of Disneyland's 50th Celebration in 2005 and the game has lived well beyond the originally intended time it was planned to run.

Over time you've seen our in-Park presence and other parts of VMK go away. You may remember our V.I.P Tours at Disneyland and Walt Disney World, or our in-Park Quest. We didn't stop doing those things because we don't love the game or our Guests, but because the time to run those promotions ended.

At Disney we're still committed to building communities and online virtual worlds – and we're looking forward to providing you the opportunity to enjoy other exciting new experiences.

Don't look at VMK ending as a bad thing – think of it as a new beginning, a chance to explore something fresh and new! Think of it like school: You don't want to leave your old friends, but still, the time has come to graduate and move onto another great adventure.

In the time since we've launched VMK, we've seen many players come and go, and we're hoping you will graduate from VMK too – in particular, to games like Pirates of the Caribbean Online, Disney's ToonTown Online, Club Penguin and the upcoming Fairies and Cars online virtual worlds. We think you'll find you enjoy those just as much as VMK – if not more.

Live the Legend! Play Pirates of the Caribbean Online!

In the meantime, VMK will run like it always has, with great events and new items every week until we close – we might even fit in one or two more surprises along the way (of the virtual item kind).

So what's going to happen to the VMK Staff when VMK closes? Well, we're all moving onto other projects here at Disney and positively looking ahead to the future. Me and a few other team members have already moved to other projects (but are still making sure VMK is running smoothly until it closes).

I know that this is sad news for you, but we're all thankful we've had the opportunity to enjoy the game for as long as we did. Just know there are even cooler things on the horizon ahead, for you as players and for us as game creators. So as my good friend Captain Jack Sparrow would say...

"Bring me that horizon!"

Actually, this is not necessarily a bad thing.

If all the letters that caused the inbox mayhem had a subject line of "Save VMK", that should do a lot towards raising Corporate awareness of our distress at this silly decision of theirs. If they realize that people are this determined, and like the site this much, maybe we might just get our way with this...

If we can get even one small local station to do a story on it, it can become a chain reaction. News is a competative bussiness, because no news station wants to be out of the loop. They want you to get your news from them and not go to another station to see a story, because they would lose viewers. If several local stations see that one is doing a story on it, they will want to also. The story could jump from city to city. If enough local stations across the US run the story, national news will want to pick it up.

If they do say stuff to news shows about why it closed, it'll get more people mad, but if they don't go, they'll be setting a bad rep for people. Either way Disney has now dug a hole that they can't get out of.

If Disney decides not to close VMK, they still have that bad rep on them, not as bad, but still bad.

Pick up your phone, scream out,

Good work on the poem.

We've enjoyed this game so long,
for almost three whole years.
We've all supported Disney,
and wore our Mickey Ears.

When they said the game was closing,
our hearts just seemed to crack,
but instead of only crying,
we decided to fight back.

We will not lose this big battle,
we're not gonna turn it down,
the game is like our home,
our very friendly town.

I know that we are sad,
I know the staff are, too,
but instead of losing hope,
there is something you can do.

Call the news, support,
support it all the way.
Pick up your phone, scream out,
"we are VMK!"
Very nice! A nice rhyme scheme and true!

Guys... This is a waste of time.

Really, there are maybe... 5-6000 people who actively play VMK.
Maybe 3000 maximum are spazzing out about VMK closing. That's not a lot, there are millions of people in America.
Anyway, not all of the people playing live in America! I know there are some in Canada, England, et cetera.
There's not enough people to make this a big deal.
But, good luck anyway.

Peter Gabriel | Don’t Give Up lyrics

In this proud land we grew up strong
We were wanted all along
I was taught to fight, taught to win
I never thought I could fail

No fight left or so it seems
I am a man whose dreams have all deserted
Ive changed my face, Ive changed my name
But no one wants you when you lose

Dont give up
cos you have friends
Dont give up
Youre not beaten yet
Dont give up
I know you can make it good

Though I saw it all around
Never thought I could be affected
Thought that wed be the last to go
It is so strange the way things turn

Drove the night toward my home
The place that I was born, on the lakeside
As daylight broke, I saw the earth
The trees had burned down to the ground

Dont give up
You still have us
Dont give up
We dont need much of anything
Dont give up
cause somewhere theres a place
Where we belong

Rest your head
You worry too much
Its going to be alright
When times get rough
You can fall back on us
Dont give up
Please dont give up

got to walk out of here
I cant take anymore
Going to stand on that bridge
Keep my eyes down below
Whatever may come
And whatever may go
That rivers flowing
That rivers flowing

Moved on to another town
Tried hard to settle down
For every job, so many men
So many men no-one needs

Dont give up
cause you have friends
Dont give up
Youre not the only one
Dont give up
No reason to be ashamed
Dont give up
You still have us
Dont give up now
Were proud of who you are
Dont give up
You know its never been easy
Dont give up
cause I believe theres the a place
Theres a place where we belong

Ok,

1. VMK isn't "just a game" to most players. We have made friends, grown bonds, AND it keeps people who can't visit the Parks in reach of the Disney Magic. It does something ToonTown, & Pirates just cannot do.

2. VMK, nor Disney told us that this was to be a temporary promotion until the closing announcement was made. All we knew before the announcement was made, is that it was made for the 50th Anniversary of Disneyland.

3. How do you call 3,000 - 5,000 people per day low? I would call that an amazing feet.

4. None of us are really "overreacting". This game is as important to us, as it is maybe your favorite TV Show, or a Favorite Movie. Maybe they want to tear down a favorite attraction at the Theme Parks, who many people enjoy and have very fond memories of. This is not overreacting.

Do not take any offense to this, but we are doing this to save OUR treasure. Something WE love and hold dear. The fight is ALL worth it.

1. And hopefully by spending a large time in VMK forming those bonds you haven't lost track of real life in the process.

2. I do believe that, if not at an earlier time, yavn said so when he talked about closing the VMK Central areas in the real parks. That was step 1 to closing up shop.

3. 3,000 - 5,000 a large number? It is a big number, yes. But when you compare it to other online games, especially popular console-based video games or something of the like, there are games on the internet and otherwise that attract more than that.

4. I can understand some people are more into the game than others, but I honestly don't believe the destruction of this game is anything to cry over as so many of you stated your reaction was. The people that play it may be real, but the items, locales, and even friendships are quite virtual. Virtual stuff never did or will exist. I love my virtual friends, that's for sure, but do I know them? No. I don't know their name, their home, or what their life is like. They could be a nice little 12-year-old girl or a 35-year-old man. They could want to be my friend, or they may have an underlying ill intent to rob me of every virtual item I own, or worse. Even if their intent is to be my friend, that cannot go farther than the virtual realms of the game. They can give me virtual items, play the virtual mini-games with me, even compliment me on my virtual rooms, clothing, or other items. Still, it remains virtual. Having said all this, I think that crying over the loss of something virtual is a bit of an overreaction, yes. If your house burns down though, please, feel free to cry.

And just so you know who this is coming from, I'm a "Here From Day 1" person. I've got a Best Guest Room Pin, a Best Game Room Pin, an Inferno that I've had since forever, multiple well-decorated rooms that I've had forever, and countless friends that I've had forever on VMK. Still, over my three years of work on VMK, I've gotten nothing but virtual items and virtual friends that, all, sadly, shall fade away with the closing of VMK; yet, my real life shall go on quite unaffected. I'll miss VMK, I'll miss my virtual friends, but I shall go on.

Well I have to admit I am very proud of the VMK community. Everyone who is trying hard to keep VMK alive is learning a great deal about the US constitution. Believe it or not. We have free rights in this nation and I am so happy to see the new generation taking a matter like this to the next level to stand up for what they believe in. You are all protesting (peacefully I must add) and coming up with some great ideas to show Disney how much you disagree with their decision to close down VMK. True some people are going to tell you your efforts are futile, but you are not giving up. And believe it or not, emailing CNN with a story is a good way to get the message to Disney. As minute the chances are that the story will be picked up, you are still making a difference. With so many people writing to the media, you are believe it or not getting the message out to Disney that you are unhappy and they are listening. I am unsure at this point, if they will reconsider their decision, however you are still giving hope that this community may survive. Good work everyone! Keep it up! :)

You act like your virtual items weren't important to you, and that just because it was virtual, why should it matter?

If someone (somehow) took those virtual items such as your Here Since Day 1 Pins, Inferno, Best Game Room would you not be upset?

To me, and i'm sure many VMK players, what does it matter that it's virtual? Many people watch online ride videos of Disney Theme Park rides, shows attractions, and all of these are "Keeping the Magic Within Their Reach!". That's what VMK does. It keeps us in touch with the Disney world, and theme parks. Virtual should not be a factor...

Not meaning to Rant.

I am one of those people who wouldn't care. I have better things to do than be upset about loosing my virtual items. Sure, some people worked very hard for them. Video games don't stay alive forever, though, and very much so promotion video games.

Park cast members have no more power over VMK than the rest of us. More voices always help, but they hold no special power.

We have a good chance to win this!

I am one of those people who wouldn't care. I have better things to do than be upset about loosing my virtual items. Sure, some people worked very hard for them. Video games don't stay alive forever, though, and very much so promotion video games.

Please note this is not directed to anyone not having "better things to do." I am saying that I am a person who gets over things easily. I am sorry if there was a misunderstanding, or I hurt someone's feelings.

People aren't sad about VMK closing because their gonna be losing their stuff. Its about their friends. Everyone is going to be losing their best friends. Ever thought of that? I guess not.

As I said at least five times in the #vmkforums, the only reason I will miss VMK is because I am losing my friends. Half of them I won't even be able to contact. I was merely quoting and voicing my own opinion.

Ok guys, did anyone call channel 2? 11 'o clock news? channel 4 news? common people we need these stations! If parents would see what a big chaios this is turning into, im SURE they will join us! No, I KNOW they will join us! THINK about it! If they see their kids fighting like real adults, don't you think they would think that they had matured their children? And once they hear that the other options for their children's gaming is violent, don't you think parents will begin to throw a fit about Disney's idea for "fun"? My best friend has started VMK in December since he can't go to Walt Disney World or Disneyland and he has told me that this game means more to him then any real theme park he has ever been to. Here is a poem desribing what i "predict":

It all started
with fun and joy
now our fun ends
with cries of girls and boys

We will be heard
no doubt about it
we'll call every news station
we know our story will fit

It's too hard to let go
to the friends we have made
I refuse to say goodbye
when VMK ends that day

I will fight to my grave
I will fight 'till we're dead
Disney will hear
Every word we have said

We will win this battle
Disney will see
They can't shut me up
No, not me!
