The promotional image for Disney's latest hit series.

America's favorite musical gets "tooned-in!"

Everyone knows the story of Troy and Gabriella, the two love-struck teens from Disney's smash hit, High School Musical. The catchy songs, hip dance moves and award-winning storyline have captured the hearts of millions of viewers all over the world, from pre-teen girls to middle-aged moms. And now, Disney is combining their modern hit with it's classic heritage by bringing Sharpay, Ryan, Troy and the rest into the animated world.

One of the brains behind the project is High School Musical's choreographer, Kenny Ortega. He assues us that "It's going to be something really big, I can feel it. It's been so great working with these kids on set, and now I get to watch these little cartoon versions of them dance around and sing."

Kenny sat down with us and told us a bit about the new show.

"The show won't be set either before or after the events of High School Musical 2 and 3, but rather will be focused on the cast's various activities at school. The animation...

... style is very cute, with characters having large heads and smaller bodies, similar to the Japanese 'chibi' style. It's also similar to that of Disney's recent hit mini-series, Phineas and Pherb, with characters having enlarged eyes and oddly-shaped heads."

The most exciting part of the new series, Kenny tells us, is that each 45 minute-long episode will have an all-new song, complete with dancing characters using moves created by Mr. Ortega himself. "It's really thrilling to be able to take things we've done in the real world, and then bring them into the realm of fantasy." says Kenny. "We've been working very hard over here on the two-hour first episode, which will contain about 16 new songs." Some of the new songs include "I'm The Queen Of All" to be sung by Jackie, and "Nobody Loves The Nerds," Stanley's number near the beginning of the film. Other songs mentioned were "And I Was Like, Yeah, Totally!" and "I wil C U Der."

But not everything in the series will be the same as the movies. According to Kenny, the launch episode will include the new characters Stanley Micks, a nerdy member of the science club who befriends Troy through an unusual series of events, and Jackie Evens, Sharpay's cousin and greatest rival. The voices for these characters are confirmed to be provided by Disney Channel Stars Orlando Brown and Miley Ray Cyrus for Stanley and Jackie, respectively.

Kenny promises fans that both the humor and drama from the movies will be incorperated into the series, still using real high school conflicts including gym, peer pressure and prom night. "We've observed that kids nowadays are just itching to be more grown-up, and we feel that we're giving this to them in the best way possible." Kenny continues. "This way that can still watch cartoons, but still be able to say that they watch 'big kid programming.' Also, this gives us a chance to introduce High School Musical to younger audiences, specifically the pre-school and kindergarden levels."

So whether it's live-action or animated, viewers everywhere will continue to adore the wonder that is High School Musical, and may even be able to expect some new surprises in the parks coming soon. Kenny Ortega sums it up in his own words: "Even though the actors may grow old, these little guys will carry on the legacy for years to come. We hope that someday today's children still be watching the series with their kids."

... not really. :D
