I'm guessing it has to do with lag, I was on the Alice in Wonderland ride with my brother, who decided to only be on for a couple minutes. After he turned around a certain edge, he disappeared but he was still yapping away as if nothing had ever happened. After we got back to Fantasyland Courtyard, he reappeared and we were talking about the disappearence of his avatar. He said he didn't even see himself disappear.
