I got up until #2. I opened up Microsoft Paint, and pressed ctrl+v and even went to Edit>Paste, but paste wasn't avaible because I didn't have anything copied. I continually try and press alt+prt sc. Which on my computer, shares a key with insert. Is there something wrong with what I did?

Try holding Shift, and then Print Screen.

This is what I do, but I have a laptop.
PrtSc held down while pressing the FN key, which if you have a desktop, would probably work with just the PrtSc key. Try that?

i have never had to press another button other than, 'print screen'.. once you hit that, it copies the desktop.. then just open your editing program (paint, photoshop, etc.) then paste it..
