Hi - if you trade for one from someone who has not yet edited the text box can you edit it or does it automatically save and lock when traded/given?

No, you can still edit it.
Also, others can place the gift boxes in your room as to leave you a gift with their text in it and everything.
But even then I think you can still edit it.
