I have a question that will help with Christmas shopping and such. On most of the previous game consoles, you need a memory card/stick to save your progress on games. Do you need that to save progress on a wii? If so, is there a certain type and where can I get them?

No need for Memory Card, just use the built in stuff. It is about 1GB or something right? Each game save is only about 17KB, that is right, 17KB! That is not 1,000 KB which is 1MB which is 999MB off of 1GB.

It comes with one, but if it runs out, buy a new one.
If you don't, you won't be able to save your pictures and games.
