View Full Version : Disney's Online World Guide (Wiki).
Disney101 12-11-2007, 08:00 PM I do not know about other players but I find wikipedia unethical and fake. Wikipedia allows ANY member to edit a page using there own mind and what they know about VMK. Leading to this issue, there could be many players that post staff members as there own accounts or may even provide false information. I do not think Wikipedia is a good source to use because of that, do you not agree?
I disagree because there are mods that delete edits that seem to be unethical. Plus,if I'm not mistaken, you have to sign up for the DOW. Standard Wikipedia is different, on the other hand.
TheBird 12-11-2007, 08:20 PM Yup, you need to sign up for DOW, so that people don't just come in and delete it all.
Disney101 12-11-2007, 08:20 PM but also....on the other hand..DOW is wikipedia and not all things are found or unknown.
Yes but if something (example, a date when an item was retired) is unknown, they mark "Unknown" I have seen it many times before. And also, DOW is an entirely different website then Wikipedia, although they are both forms of Wiki they are moderated by different people.
StitchMad 12-11-2007, 08:39 PM The thing that is different from our DOW from wikipedia.com is that we can moderate who looks, joins, and edits the DOW. If we think someone is gonna mess up our information, we're not gonna allow them to join are we? The good thing about DOW is that we can see who has edited what, and you can also edit things back to what they were before. Say someone deleted the whole of the time-line (http://www.disneysonlineworlds.com/index.php/Timeline_and_Important_Updates) page, (which I hope nobody does), we can then click the "History" Tab at the top of the page, and see what was changed. As Priz once said to me, if something doesn't go to plan, don't worry, there isn't an easy way to really mess up the wiki.

Everything is recorded onto the site. We can also check the Recent Changes (http://www.disneysonlineworlds.com/index.php/Special:Recentchanges) to see who has edited what. Most of our editors have this page set as their homepage.. and therefore we can review everything that goes on. Which I'm sure you'll agree is good, and very few incorrect information is posted.
Then again, there is a positive side to in-correct information being posted, we might add it to the Myths and Rumors (http://www.disneysonlineworlds.com/index.php/Myths_and_Rumors) page, if they have any back-up. ;)
Pretty much, if you see incorrect info and don't want to edit it yourself, PM me or any of the other editor (http://www.disneysonlineworlds.com/index.php/Special:Listusers), and we can sort it out.
Thanks, and keep editing!! :)
slinkyman 12-11-2007, 08:42 PM I don't just the wikipedia on certain things. (history, events, etc.)
The DOW is a little more trust worthy. All though I have seen false info on there and it wasn't change for almost a month.
Whipstersh 12-11-2007, 08:55 PM DOW is a bit more trustworthy due to the moderation of members and information there.
I wouldn't trust any information on Wikipedia regarding VMK. Last week I noticed that it was on the list of "Commonly Vandalized Pages" on Wikipedia.
prisoner 12-12-2007, 03:43 AM Lets clear a few things up:
Disneys Online Worlds (http://www.disneysonlineworlds.com/) (DOW) is in no way affiliated with wikipedia. It is a site owned by Nick, who also owns this site, and is run by mods and members of Nick's sites.
We do use the same software that wikipedia uses to run their site. This software is called "mediawiki".
Wikipedia, in general, allows everyone to edit their pages. DOW allows only those permitted to edit our pages. We do not accept everyone to be editors.
I'm not going to say that DOW is perfect. There is a lot of information that is missing. There may even be information that is incorrect. Sometimes we're slow to correct or add information. There are two big reasons why this might happen
Nobody has gotten around to fixing it or adding the information. Sometimes we get distracted by other issues, or it gets lost in things we need to do.
We don't have proof about the information. We try to error on the side of caution - if we know something was released, but don't know exactly when, we won't list the date instead of being wrong.
We are trying to make DOW the best, most complete, most accurate, and least biased reference to VMK (and all the Disney games) that we can. Do we always succeed? Probably not. If you see mistakes - we welcome you to point them out to us. We have an entire forum (http://www.vmkforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=89) where everyone (even people who can't edit the wiki) is invited to discuss DOW and its contents.
Haveamagicalday 12-13-2007, 01:59 AM Also all mods on this forum, and some of the others, have the power to delete pages/images that shouldn't be there, or if the creator asks them to delete it. Also when you apply to be an editor, the mods look at what you've done/acted on vmkf, or any other of Nick's sites, if they think you'd be a great member to the team, you'll be an editor. This makes it better than just anybody editing. If for some reason the mods think that a person is "messing things up" or something similar, they can block them from doing any edits for a certain period of time or for ever.
Like others have said, if somebody does something wrong is so easy to change this back to the last edit made, or even 6 or 7 edits back with just one revert :).
So, you can see DOW is a pretty good place to get info, and it's more reliable than wikipedia.
