Also, members got them as a gift, but this was in early 2006 I believe (so you had to be a member back then), because that's how I got mine... However, this site, along with all of Nick's other sites costs a lot of money to run, so he accepts donations to keep the sites running. People who donate to the site get extra features (like signatures, userpages, PM space, etc.) that regular users do not get.
