If this is in the wrong place mods, please move it.

I was recently talking to my sister about why yavn was so important and all of the testers and hosts and such. She then said "Well, how come *VMKF user name* is so popular?" And then it hit me.

How do you become "popular" on VMK? And when I say popular, I don't mean the annoying guests who think they're so special with the Gabriella outfit. I mean those who if you said their username, you'd automatically know who they were.

EDIT: I'm not talking about anyone in particular.

I think you are talking about Batleth? Because he's hidden all the time;-)
And Yavn.. he made the game! Why else?
Plus, who cares about popularity. As long as you have your friends, you are cool.

There is no such thing as popularity on VMK. Its how you get to know people, and that they hear your name fromother people.

you cant be popular on vmk.... no matter who you are! unless your Yavn. LOL
but as long as you have your friends on there and your happy then it doesn't matter.... (On the game.)
LOL there is NO WAY to become popular in vmk. to many people play it! it's impssible.

I don't really think you can be popular on VMK... I think that when they mean popular they're talking about being seen around the kingdom soooo much that people recognize them.....

just my 2 cents =]]

You get popular by getting rich really.
I was on my other account, and I set a highscore on POTC and wherever I went.. "Hey! You're that dude from POTC highscores list!" I really wouldn't give a hoot about popularity, who cares?
People who are nice, give away things, have lots of friends who are also real life friends.. they are fun to be with, aka popular.

I think it is just how long someone has been playing, what they do when they are in VMK, ( are they out and about, in host rooms or just staying in one room)
There are quite a few titles that are familar to me, either I have seen their posts here alot so I recongnize their names, or have seen them many time in different host rooms that I now remember their tittle. Also for me lol the shorter the title the easier it it to remember, and the less chance there is someone else walking around with a similar name.

Being recognized and being popular are not the same thing. I am not popular. I have a small list of friends which I talk to often and another small group I talk to occasionally. That doesn't make me popular by a very very long shot. I am, however, recognized frequently. Almost every day someone will come up to me and say
"hey your that green guy from the for.am arcade!"
To which I reply "don't say that or we will both get banned!"

BTW if that was you who said that, please please don't say that again!!!

"Popular..
Please! It's all about popular.
It's not about aptitude,
it's the way you're viewed,
so it's very shrewd to be,
very, very popular like ME!

Oh sorry, can't help but sing Wicked when there's talk of popular. :D
I find it very amusing that players obsess so much on "being popular" or "rich". What does that really mean anyway?

I was a bit popular for beta player, free inferno from HOST_Phinny, always in High Scores for pirates, and for helping at HOST_Lily's events for 2 months in a row.

LOL nice one whip! ;)

Well, I think it's just being on VMK a long time, cause like I was playing since green flip hats were originally being sold on another account then I moved to different ones so I think it's just like knowing a lot of people and a lot of people knowing you. ;)

Here's my own experience on being popular.. you can't be popular on VMK! :xtongue:

I know a lot of people on VMK who are on the Forums as well. That doesn't mean they;re popular just because they are on a fansite. I'm sure lots of people play VMK, have a lot of stuff, and never been to a fansite before.

As for my personal experience, yes I became a mini-mod here, but nothing has changed one bit with me. I still say hi to everyone and not something like "hey, I'm the popular kid". Also, my "status" on VMK has stayed the same. Sure I get a "Hey, it's TravisSch" every once in a while, but I don't get tons of people coming to my room as soon as I open it because they want to see me. ;)

(Sorry, I couldn't think of a better argument. This was just my opinion! :))

One of the reasons i like VMK is because you cant be "popular" I have been on oher sites where there where "well-known" people.

But because VMK isn't like fourms its just people walking it would be hard to get popular. Because you would have to be online at same time and you can only be in one room at once, and only people in the room your in can see you.
If that made any sense....

Well, you can become noticed for certain things like Yavn for example. Yavn wasn't the only person who made vmk people! Some of the other people don't play anymore, but some still do, and you don't go racing to them saying hi, you probably don't know them, since they do not wear staff clothing. Yavn became popular when he started showing off flying carpet magic. Regular vmk players, like Slinkyman, is noted sometimes because he met yavn. But popular isn't really what you think it is. It's more of being noticed bc of something. Think about it, how can you be popular in a VIRTUAL world, when you probably don't even know the person you think is popular, just think on that.

Thank you haveamagicalday, I am so tired of people thinking yavn invented vmk. To tell you the truth I am sure their are alot more people who work harder than him. Well popularity is all in peoples minds. Now if you mean people wanting to be your friends instantly, well then you are talking about rich people. I have noticed that the richer you are the more people want to be your friend and talk to you on vmk. my two cents

LOL you CAN be popular on vmk!! at least with your friends!!! you know how everyone has like a circle of friends! and your like the most popular one.... and everyone likes to be around you bc your so much fun to be with! LOL that's kinda being popular on vmk right?........... 0_o

People are only popular in VMK cause they've been playing for a while, so they're well known...

I am not popular, and I'm still making new friends. You can't be popular with VMK, there is new players joining everyday.

You can be well known, for many reasons. If you do a lot of trades with many people, of course people might take notice. If you visit the Hosts everyday, then Hosts will get to know you more and more. I don't believe you can be "popular" in VMK. Of course, Hosts and Yavn are well known, because they run events, and Yavn releases and shows us upcoming items (Sometimes.. maybe my avatar will tell something. ;) )

Kit
12-07-2007, 03:57 AM
I mean there are some players who totally dominate at POTC that everyone wants to play with :) That counts as popular--the "in" crowd everyone wants to join with.

If you can fill all your 150 friends with ppl who are always on you can get popular. I mean when your friends log on they *always* follow you to check the room you're in, or to say hi and chat. Then their friends some over. Happens to me :) I can never build a secret project because I always get mobbed by people.

Being a nice guy/girl who doesn't do taken will get you more friends :) Take the time to chat with ppl and give (cheap) free some times. Think about how you'd like a host to treat you.

Lastly, get a best guest room award and run a bunch of good quests.

Good luck,
-Kit-

-Go gets the theosaurus to see if I can find another word for popular- I'm getting a headache from reading "the word" so much.
Anyway, I do think there is popular people in VMK. Those would be the people who are staff members, have higher rankings, or had certain things happen to them, in or out of VMK. Of course, this is not always true, but it seems to be the majority of people. Everyone in VMK is equal, and should be treated the same. Staff members should be treated the same as us in my opinion. If you want to be "popular" you can't. If you want to be "well-known", well then you can play pirates. Get to know some of the people that play, join their games, play friendly when they want you to. Get on the high score list. Build rooms, get best rooms, don't forget you get your name on the homepage for a week! Be yourself, if people know your attitude and what you like, they will respect you more, and even make jokes about it. In a good way of course.

I'll also add in, that people from this forum are known in VMK, and you will usually be recognised by people from the site in VMK. If you do a lot of posts on this forum, your name will stick in peoples heads right?

Myself, I've naturally done all the above, but don't forget being well known might not always be the best thing. I've been banned from VMK for one month for people talking about how they knew me from this site. So trust me, stay back and just go where VMK takes you. :)

Unfortunatly I get it every day, "StitchMad omg I know you from VMK for.um!!" STOP. "Please don't say that or you're gonna get us both banned ok?".

Sure there's popularity in the game. Like others have stated, playing a long time and/or having a lot of stuff leads to popularity. I recognize loads of people because they're always in the same trading/offer/offering rooms as I am. If you want to be popular, put yourself out there.
But just because I recognize loads of players, that doesn't mean they're popular.

Well being popular on VMK... I think it's confusing because there are different groups in the kingdom.. i see people that i've seen before around the kingdom all the time but that doesn't mean they're well known... some of my friends tell their brothers/sisters about me and then they meet me... and my friends also tell their friends about me.... sooo i dont really think you can be popular on VMK...

Well, it's kind of a given that the CLs (when we still had them) were always pretty popular because their names always stood out. Not that that's a bad thing or anything, it's just how things were. You'll also get more noticed if you win Best Guest Room, Quest, or Game.

I have noticed that the richer you are the more people want to be your friend and talk to you on vmk. my two cents

I have also noticed that too.

The richer you are the more people want to be on your team in pirates because they think your good.
The poorer you are the less people want to be on your team because they think your bad.

on VMK it seems popularity has alot to do with how 'rich' you are.

Define the word popular. It's just a matter of how many people you talk to, the image you present, and the things you do. There is no such thing as popularity in VMK (Except if you go to the East High School rooms and in the rare cases where you abuse your resources and minipulate people in the game to know you're name.)

What about the annoying players with the infernos/sparrow suits/stitch hats? Defining the annoying people in the game as guests wearing poor clothes is descriminating against them. Guest or not, you can still be annoying.

I didn't mean to discriminate or be steryotypical. That's just what I see a lot, guests flaunting their Gabriella and Troy outfits.

I dont see how that statement is any different than what you just accused her of. Calling people annoying because they wear infernos/sparrows/sitch hats is discriminating is it not?

VMK is a game played by real people in the real world. The real world is brought into VMK. Hence all the "popularity" and "role-playing". I honestly do not like some of the so called "famous/popular" people on VMK. Not jealousy, just how they act. They think they can do whatever they please. I can understand the staff being "popular", because they are staff and they help with this game. All games are like that. Most of these "popular" people take it all in and act all "popular". This is probably a fact, the "popular" people on VMK, are nobody's outside the game, outside their house really. I really want to mention names, but then there are rules. If any of the above doesn't make sense, if though it does if you actually think, then here is a short version: The "popular" people in VMK are nobody's in the real world. The "popular" people in VMK think they are "popular" and they act like it and act like they can do whatever they want. If I could really express myself, then I would. Like I said early, there are rules.

Btw, I am not going to look at this thread over and over to see what "comebacks" or anything else you have to say. There is a PM system for a reason.

As long as you don't mention "from the place" or "from the for.um" you will be OK. You could know them from pirates right? At least then if you get banned you have a back up argument. :)
