Article from Screamscape ;)

The latest buzz about the upcoming Space Mountain rehab claims that “Mission 2” has been given the green light and that it looks like they will likely be gutting the entire inside of the mountain and rebuilding the ride from scratch. A possible plan to speed up the process may be to remove the “top” of the mountain itself to allow for the removal of the old ride more quickly and in much larger pieces than what would normally be able to fit through the 22 ft tall back door. The funny part of the this story however is that in much the same fashion that they put up covered scaffolding around the buildings in Epcot when they go under rehab, painted to look like how the exterior should look, they are considering a similar tactic for the top of Space Mountain to help hide the bald spot if they remove it.

Hmmm... I hope they do take the top part off because I want to see the insides! But I bet they are just gonna put scaffolding around it so nobody can see. But I also wonder if they're gonna build it from scratch, if their gonna build a whole new ride or just rebuild all of the track just like for Disneyland

Such a shame. I always preferred the MK Space Mountain over the DLR Space Mountain. I'd hate to see it change - even if they make it like Discovery Mountain (aka DLP's Space Mountain), which I consider to be the best of the three.

There are 5 (Only Coaster that is at all 5 Disney Parks with the same name), 6 if you count to 2 tracks on WDW's version (Omega and Alpha). Anyways, I prefer Disneyland's especially after the renovation, it is a fun ride which is what Disney is famous for (Disney doesn't build scary rides, just very fun ones). This is designed to be the Matterhorn for WDW as this park has a better Big Thunder Mountain which is supposed to cover and make it even.

I hope they don't change the layout, they need to keep this coaster as a in the middle type ride for Disney. Also, screamscape is a fanboy site, it is wrong half the time so I wouldn't be surprised if it did or didn't happen. They don't need to change the layout, just modernize it.

Im not sure if they would exactly use scaffolding because when they were building everest, they said that they didn't like scaffolding because they couldnt see what they were working with so they did a different kind of scaffolding. But I could be wrong.

Anyways, I prefer Disneyland's especially after the renovation,Not quite sure I get this. The "renovation" was nothing of the sort, once the budget was cut and the schedule was shortened. They painted the track black, increased the speed limit a little, changed the wall projections, and recorded a new score. That's the equivalent of a paint job on a house.

I'm not commenting on this being a favored version - to each his own; my favorite is the Matterhorn and many people disagree. I honestly just don't understand the "especially" portion.

Didn't they also take out some stuff? Like when I remember going on it, I could always see stuff because there was like that big orange glowing ball, then when I went this summer it was gone. And also, wasn't there a point in line, where there was like tinted windows, and you could see a little bit of the trains fly by? That wasn't there either when I went this summer unless they re-routed the line or something.

how so? the magic kingdon space mountain didn't even have a soundtrack.I don't go on roller coasters for soundtracks. I listen more to soundtracks at home and am perfectly happy if a roller coaster does not have one.

I stated earlier that my favorite Disney coaster is the Matterhorn - which you'll note has no music within the attraction whatsoever. Neither does Everest, Big Thunder, nor California Screamin' (except for one short period of time). A good soundtrack does not a great attraction make.

I prefer the current WDW Space Mountain probably for the same reasons I enjoy the Matterhorn. They are, in many ways, similar. What appeals to me in each case is totally subjective and probably not worth analyzing.

They redid the whole station, added a new soundtrack, and pretty much updated every part of the ride besides the track. The ride was closed for two years and I went on it the fourth day after it reopened so it was more than that then what you said.

They also added new trains from what I know (maybe that was after) but they did more than what you said, they wouldn't do just that after being closed for TWO YEARS!

There would be no way for the them to take off the top of space mountain. It would be unstable. I like the way space mountain is right now. I hope they don't redo it. :(

- ZachI'd been riding the original since its opening in 1977, and I have to disagree with your definition of renovation. They only changed the facade of the station: the fake ship is mostly the same, the front screen was replaced with a high-def projection, and a little more of the decor was altered. I had already mentioned the new score, which is a fairly minor change, really.

Again, it was mostly the equivalent of a paint job and nothing else. Regardless of the amount of time they spent (I already said something about the budget slash), they dragged their feet on what they did eventually do. The original plan was to replace the entire track and ride system, and all we ended up getting was a tune-up.

Bear in mind this was at a time when Imagineering was spending tons of cash for very little result. Similar to the Monsters Inc. ride at DCA, which cost over $35 million and was the same refit a rival company was able to do - better - at another park for about $5 million.

But if you have specifics on what was done over those two years and for the money spent, I'll be willing to reconsider.

gee, hopefully they dont change the track, I think it's much more fun than the disneyland one. I've ridden the tracks all over and I think the "Out-Of-Control Wild Mouse" feel is so much fun. They should just touch up the paint outside and in the Que-Line. Maybe get some new trains with special lighting techniques. And get some new night lights on the building.

In a way I am kind of glad they're renovating it-when I ride it feels as if I'm going to get hit.

I also read from someone that a Cast Member told them that they placed fans around the track thats blows air on you to create the illusion that your going fast. I disagreed with them at first but then after thinking for a little I always remembered while riding Space Mountain in Disneyland, I always felt cold air on me that didn't seem you would get on a normal indoor coaster, but I could be wrong. Or, they could be wrong lol

The ride itself only goes 28mph. It is in my Disney book. It feels though as if you are going 70 miles per hour

i wonder what this new space mountain will be like i really like the one they have now. i would like to see the top come off, to me when disney shows you something your not really supose to see thats the magic. like when i was in wdw for the magic music days and where behind the scenes i saw bell talking the beast i thought that was cool because you never see that in front of the scenes. we also got to see the parade go by but the characters where not on it and the floats where going really fast too!

Here is the official site:
http://www.spacemountain2.com/

Space Mountain: Mission 2 is a conversion of a ride of nearly the same name (Space Mountain) in Disneyland Paris and can be considered as a small upgrade to Space Mountain. Some aspects of the ride have changed, such as the video shown in the second "climb" of the ride (The smiling moon seen in the original has been replaced with a planet and two asteroids exploding) and the introduction of a very well simulated Vortex, using bent neon lights. A welcome addition to this conversion is audible countdown (French only) when loaded into the "Cannon", whereas before riders were held in suspense over when the "Cannon" would fire. The physical coaster track has not changed.
