Summary:
Katie Stanson has a good life- good grades, and friends she loves to death. But she has a past. From kindergarten to the third grade she was bullied, and dealt with two backstabbers who she thought were her friends. She moved after third grade, and now, in seventh grade, some of those people move to her town. It becomes to seem like one big
Flashback.
I'm watching the video camera in my head.
Flash six years ago. It's April twenty-first, and I'm in the first grade. "You're stupid!" He says. "You can't even do Math!"
'Don't pay attention to them.' I think. I can't help it. It hurts, a lot. More than when I accidentally shut the trunk on my pinky.
"Yeah, nobody likes you!" She says. I look up in horror. Ashley said that. I thought she was my friend! Why is she saying that?!
"I-I have Samantha and Amanda and Courtney." I say weakly.
"They only feel sorry for you!" He says. He is Morris.
Back in the classroom, I nearly tear up at the memory. It happened a long time ago, but I still remember the sting. Ashley was one of my 'friends' who 'liked' me when no one was around, then hated me once we were in public. I had to deal with her until the end of third grade.
Flash two years later. It is nearly the end of third grade. "We're moving." My parents say. I feel like I could fly. Moving means no more Morris, or Zac, or Ashley and Elizabeth. I'll be free from their torture. But before long, I think of my friends. My three friends. 'I'll keep in touch.' I think.
Back in the real world, I smile to myself, at the reminder and proof I'd had that my family wasn't the only good in the world. I know that it was the best thing, moving here. I found myself. Back in Jeffersontown, I could only be my crazy self in private, around the friends who cared enough to ever talk to me. Now, in Thomsontown, I can do that anywhere, and I don't have to care about what people say. It's my way of filtering out the good from the bad, acting like myself. But a part of me still hasn't healed, still hasn't had closure. Sometimes it worries me. Sometimes it infuriates me. Heck, sometimes it really scares me.
"Katie!" Mrs. Rasen says, and I snap up. "Can you repeat what I just said?"
"Uh..." I look to my friend, Sana, for support. She was one of the first people I could open up to in Thomsontown. She helped me find me. But now she just shrugs. "The North American..."
"Wrong!" The teacher says. Oops. "I said we will be accepting four new students into our grade tomorrow."
"It's not as if we wouldn't have noticed." I mutter to Sana, sinking in my seat. The bell rings, and I run to lunch.
"Hi!" Firenza greets as I sit down. She's one of my best friends. I met her a year ago, but sometimes I feel like I know her better than anyone else in the group. "Why weren't you online yesterday?" We always go on Instant Messaging on weekends.
"Oh, I was at my friend, Amanda's party." I say. "She's from Jeffersontown." My friends nod. I had moved from Jeffersontown to Thomsontown after third grade, and Amanda was one of my three friends there. "And guess who I saw there?"
"Wilson Jermaine Heredia?" Robin asks sarcastically.
"I wish." I say, snorting. "Y'see, in Jeffersontown in was bullied a lot, right? Well, one of the guys who used to do it a lot was there, his name was Morris... he got tall."
"Oh my gosh are you kidding?!" Firenza asks. "Did you kick him?"
"Yeah!" Sana says, "You shoulda kicked 'im!"
"I woulda pounded his face in." Robin says, grinning.
"Actually, I didn't do anything." I say, "It's like he still had control over me, he could still intimidate me from across the room when I'm not even sure if he remembers me."
"Are you kidding?!" Robin asks. "You should have told him off!"
"Yeah." I say. "I wish I had." Lunch continues. "Hey, guys?" I ask, "If I had another chance, like if I knew I was gonna see him in an elevator or something, would you guys come with me?"
"Oh, yes." Robin says in a devilish voice. She puts her left hand into a fist and starts pounding it into her right hand. Sana starts to laugh nervously. None of us are sure if Robin's kidding.
That night, Firenza and I are on an Instant Messenger. I am Villagekat, she is windwisker. We're doing a line-by-line of the Numa Numa Song. A line-by-line is when one person says a line of a song or movie, and the next person says the next line, and so on. The song ends.
windwisker: YAY!
Villagekat: Go us

Ohmystarclan: cool...

windwisker: Wait is Morris the one from the party?
Villagekat: yeah
The conversation pretty much strayed to random other topics after that.
The next day, I go to the elementary school playground. It's where my friends and I meet every day to wait for the bus before school. It couldn't be. I think as I walk over. It's just a coincidence... but how could it be? How could all of the new kids' names be the exact same ones as some kids who basically ruined my life? Already there are Firenza, Sana, and one of my other friends, Evan. Yes, I know one of my friends is a boy, get over it. Did Firenza tell them? "Hey, you wanna know something funny about the new kids?" I ask.
"We know." Sana says. "Firenza told us."
"Okay." I mutter. I speak up, wondering, "How common names do you think Eddet, Grystare, Dawp, and Passap are?"
"Not very." Evan admits, "Unless Jeffersontown is famous for their weird names and there are many Dawps and Rapps and Pascals or whatever."
"Which I doubt is true." I say. "Imagine if they were in all my classes?"
"You'd probably be ranting about it during lunch endlessly," Evan jokes.
"Or starting riots!" Sana says.
"Riot?! Where?!" Robin asks. Was she there the whole time?
"Robin, how long have you been there?" Firenza asks. Robin shrugs. As we laugh and basically have a good time waiting for the bus, I know that everything will be okay. So what!
Until the bus comes.
And I see Ashley and Elizabeth.
Okay my butt.
Chapter 2
For a moment I'm frozen in place. Is it really them? I haven't seen them in four years, my memory's probably pretty warped. But they sent me home crying sometimes. Could I actually forget them? "Katie." Firenza says, grabbing my arm. "C'mon." Nodding, I run onto the bus with her. Sadly, my deer-in-headlights thing has left only two seats on the bus, next to Ashley and Elizabeth. Sighing, I sit down in the window seat. Grabbing a piece of paper, I furiously scribble down, The people next to us are Ashley and Elizabeth. Underneath that, I write in huge letters, BACKSTABBERS. Firenza reads it, points and to my tormentors, and mouths, "Them?" I nod. Before I know it, Firenza has a fake smile decorating her face. Turning to Ashley and Elizabeth, she says, "Hi, I'm Firenza! Are you two new here?" Ashley gives her a Why are you talking to me, dork? look and says,
"Ashley Dawp." In a not-so-nice voice (She never was very subtle).
"I'm Elizabeth Passap." Liz says. She was pure poison. Making you think she was your friend, keeping you going, sympathizing with her, hanging out with her and ignoring her subtle hints of meanness, she ended up yanking it out from under you. By no means was I going to let Firenza even have a chance of falling into that trap.
"I'm Katie Stanson." I say.
"Katie Stans-" Ashley asks, but I cut her off.
"Yes, Katie Stanson, yes I think it's a pretty name too, and no we don't want to hang out with you because we know exactly what you have planned!" Just the thought of their fake kindness infuriates me.
"Uh, okay?" Elizabeth asks, playing dumb. "How would you know what we have," she makes finger quotes, "planned?"
"Does Miss Ottano's third grade class ring a bell?" I ask. The bus stops at school.
"See you later, Catty." Ashley says, and they walk off the bus, giggling in that I control the world tone that I hear all to often from people like Kathy Flide and Dani Beck (snowegoof, if you're reading this, I totally did the Kathy and Dani thing on purpose). Rolling my eyes, Firenza and I walk off the bus.
"Well, I just made a total fool of myself." I say.
"No, that was awesome!" Firenza says.
"Yeah, it felt good." I agree. "Now I just have Morris and Zac to deal with. Wish me luck!" I say, and we go our separate ways.
Chapter 3
Period 1
I walk into the evil Math class to see Morris sitting in Dean's seat. Which is right next to Robin. Who is right behind me. Don't make a fool of yourself. When I get closer, I see that he is flirting with her. Luckily, Robin's a smart girl, and can sense a creep when she sees one. "Hi Robin!" I greet, "Miss Petrovsky said she wants me to deliver a message to the office. Wanna come?" I'm lying through my teeth, but Ms. P. is as blind as a bat, no matter how corny that sounds. "We can get Evan and Sana t-"
"Yes." Robin says, cutting me off, and gets out of her seat. Sana had heard the conversation, so she goes to get Evan. "Oh my star clan, that guy's a freak!" She whispers. Evan and Sana walk over.
"Who's a freak?" Sana asks.
"I'll explain in the hallway." I promise, and we walk out. Earlier that year, we had discovered that everything we cover in the class is written out in our textbook, so if one of is tired, or stressed out, or something, we hang out in the art room.
"Who was that anyway?" Robin asks.
"Why, do you like him?" Evan teases.
"Please, you're cuter than him." Robin jokes.
"That's 'cause everyone loves me." Evan replies, grinning.
"His name is Morris, and he's one of the biggest jerks I've ever met." I say.
"Is he the one from the party?" Sana asks.
"That's exactly what Firenza said!" I say, "And yeah, he is."
"And he was flirting with me?!" Robin asks.
"Who was flirting with you?" Paige Frim asks, walking in. She's one of those self-proclaimed-popular people. I'm surprised she hasn't started out with Hi Katie. like she usually does.
"Why do you care?" I ask. Seriously, why does she?
"I just do." She says.
"How 'bout you go away?" I suggest, "We know you hate us."
"Why do you think that?"
"You act like you're better than us," I simply say, "And laugh and everything we say." Paige laughs.
"Well, why won't you even answer my question?"
"Because you already forget what you asked us!" Evan says. Paige scowls, and walks out of the room. "Wait, she actually did?"
"Well duh, she never cared in the first place." Robin counters.
"So, what did Morris say to you?" I ask.
"He told me I was 'just the girl for him'," Robin says, trying to hold back a laugh. Kathy, one of those people who think they control the Earth but is actually just a mean fangirl walks in.
"Miss P. wants you four back in class, Katie." She says.
"All right then." Evan says, and we go back to Math Class. Robin sits in her seat as if it's the electric chair.
"Hey, baby." Morris says.
"Hey jerk." Robin says, and turns to me. "Hey Katie, who was your third grade teacher?"
"Miss Ottano." I say turning around.
"Wait... Cat Katie?" Morris asks. For a millisecond I cringe, the kids' taunts ringing in my ears.
"Yup." I growl, "Are you still the same kid who-"
"Katie!" Ms. Petrovsky yells. Too bad she can't be deaf, too. "What are you doing?"
"I was..." Well, Ms. P., I was just telling off the new kid. I used to know him, I swear! Gimme a break. "Telling Morris that name-calling is not tolerated here, since I do not appreciate being called Katie Witchy."
"Morris, Katie is right." Ms. P. says, and goes back to writing on the board.
"You're gonna pay for that." Morris warns.
"You have corny phrases." I say. "And if you're thinkin' physical stuff, Robin has a lack belt, so don't."
"Well, Robin's with me now, so-" I whip around.
"You slimy little creep!" I say.
"All I'm sayin' is, she has a good chance of winding up like Ashley." He grins.
Flash. Third grade. "You're such a dork." Ashley says.
"I thought we were friends." I can barely get the words out of my mouth. I think I'm about to cry.
"I was never your friend. I'm Morris's friend. And we hate you." I try to understand why.
"Y-you said we were like Miranda and Lizzie." I weakly protest.
"Well I'm Kate now. And it's much better."
"Yeah, well, Robin actually likes me." I say.
"That's true." Robin agrees.
"You sure?" Morris asks. "'Cause you were pretty sure with Ashley too."
"Well she was sure you'd still be a jerk," Robin says, "And look what happened!" The bell rings.
Period 2
Ah, Study Hall. Basically a time of unsupervised text messaging and music-listening. And I am no exception. I whip out my green iPod and start listening to Gen X by WJ Theory. Immersing myself into the rock music, I almost don't notice Zac coming toward me.
Flash. Second grade in November. It's art class, We are drawing and, apparently, accessorizing turkeys. I slue some pink tissue paper onto my turkey's head. "I can't even see its face!" Zac says.
"It's my turkey and I'll do what I want with it." I say emotionlessly. "I think it's pretty."
"I think it's stupid!" He says. "Why are you blowing your nose?"
"I have a cold..." I say. It's kind of obvious.
"Well it's annoying, quit it!" He says.
"I can't. I'm sick." I say.
"Miss Doslisch, Katie's annoying me!" He screams.
"Katie, switch seats with Gus." The teacher says. I know I'm in trouble. After all of first grade of Zac bullying me, he got me in trouble.[/i]
"Hey, your music's too loud." He says.
"You're across the room." I say, "If it was too loud, the people around me would be complaining." I refuse to look at him.
"Why are you bobbing your head?" He asks.
"Because I enjoy this music."
"Well, it's too loud."
"No it's not." My friend, Daveigh, says. "I'm sitting right next to her and I can't hear it."
"You're deaf then." He shrugs.
"Insult my friend again and I'll slap you." I say, still not meeting his gaze.
"Believe me, she will." Daveigh adds.
"How much you wanna bet she's listening to High School Musical?" Zac asks my friend.
"Twenty bucks it's not even on her iPod." Daveigh grins.
"Done." Zac looks at me, "Let's see that iPod, Catty." I don't let him touch it, but I let him see my songs. And, just like any sane person who knows me would assume, there is no trace of that fangirl-attracter. "So, are you still obsessed with Disney?" He asks me.
"You don't care." I say, and walk away. Looking back, I see Daveigh kick him and come towards me.
"He asked me why I hang out with a loser like you." She says, and shrugs. "Kinda random."
"Actually, it's not." I explain. "I knew him back in my old school. He was a jerk, and still is."
"Oh, now I see!" She says.
"Yeah, all four bullies moved here." I say, "If you see a tall-ish guy named Mor-" The bell rings. Grr..
Period 3
Firenza's in my Health Class. I know, it's a strange class to be in with your friend, but it's an even stranger class to be in with Dani, Kathy, and Lindsay. Lindsay's not that big of a threat (She reminds me of Karen in Mean Girls) but Dani and Kathy... they basically try to rule the school. It works with some people, not with others. And they're basically a two-person We Hate Katie club. I bet one of the new kids joins by the end of the day.
Anyway, I walk into the room, it occurs to me that the putrid class will be exceptionally disgusting this year. Because Ashley and Liz are there, conversing with my hate club. "Uh-oh..." Firenza says as we walk to our seats. Strange how the club keeps sitting close to my friends and I.
"Hey Katie, seven days." Kathy says obnoxiously. Such things happen when you like The Ring, or if you have a hate club. Ignoring the fangirl, I begin talking to Firenza.
"Hey Catty," Ashley says, "Who's your friend? Freakza, right?"
"Firenza." My friend answers simply. The bell rings and the period has officially begun.
"For today's project, you will get into groups of four." Mr. Nosa says, "But I will choose them." A loud groan erupts from the classroom. "Okay, first group, Katie, Firenza-"
"Why do they always get to be together?" Dani asks.
"Because we don't sing in class!" Firenza answers, gritting her teeth.
"Katie, Firenza," Mr. Nosa says, louder this time, "And our two new students, Ashley and Elizabeth." My heart sinks, but I don't know why. I'm usually fearless against the witches of the world. I haven't even let a bully make me feel bad since third grade.
Running up my apartment stairs crying. "What's wrong?" My mom asks.
"T-today was Silly Hat Day at school!" I sob, "And Liz glued an apple to my head," I tenderly touch the now nonexistent patch of hair on my head. "With a sticky note that said 'Dumbo'!" Mom calls Liz's mom, and gets the 'Liz is an angel' excuse she go just three days before... and a week before that... and a week before that.
"The project is to make a poster that will increase your self-esteem." Mr. Nosa continues, "For now, you will just make a list of what you will put on it."
"How is a poster that they're helping out with supposed to help my self-esteem?" I whisper to Firenza.
"At least we're not working with Dani and Kathy." Firenza shrugs.
"Hey, can Zac Efron go on the poster?" Elizabeth asks.
"No." Firenza and I both say at the same time.
"They're worse." I say, "They'll do what they want anyway."
"What about Corbin Bleu?" Ashley asks.
"B-bigger no." I say. Why am I stuttering?
"Catty, Firenza, do you even know who they are?" Liz asks in a sweet tone.
"The talentless people from High School Musical?" Firenza asks.
"O-of course in this case w-we have to add the fact that Zac lip-syncs." I add.
"Unless," Firenza says, "For everything on the poster that you pick, we add something regardless of how the other feels."
"Oh, like you guys pick something, then we pick something, then you pick something, and so on until we get to ten." I say, "I could deal with that." I'm a bit uncertain. Will they actually follow the rule?
"Me too." Ashley and Liz say, smiling. "So let's start." Ashley says, "First picture, Zac Efron."
"Second picture," I say, "Wilson Jermaine Heredia."
"Who's he?" Liz asks.
"Hot actor and singer." I answer.
"Alrighty then, good luck finding a picture of your imaginary friend." Liz says. Before I can protest, she says, "Third picture, Corbin Bleu." As I am trying not to gag, Firenza says,
"Fourth picture, Tohru from Fruits Basket."
"You like anime?" Ashley asks. Firenza nods. "Ew. Why?" Firenza shrugs.
"It's better than High School Musical!" She says. Ashley smirks.
"Fifth picture," She says, "the High School Musical logo!" I roll my eyes.
"Sixth picture, Idina Menzel in Wicked."
"Uh, no?" Liza says. "Wicked is childish."
"Too bad, them's the rules." I say.
"Fine..." Liz mutters, and writes it on the list. "Seventh picture, Miley Cyrus."
"I love her!" Ashley squeals.
"And I love Warriors so that's our eighth picture!" Firenza says.
"I'm allergic to cats." Ashley groans. "Ninth picture, Raven Symone."
"God, I hate her." I say, "Tenth picture, Adventures in Babysitting."
"Oh come on, Katie, that sounds so dumb!" Liz says.
"Well I hate Raven, so I guess we're even!" I explode.
"Why are you even friends with Firenza?" Ashley asks.
"Maybe it's because Firenza's the only one who pities her enough to hang out with her." Liz says. I scream,
"She doesn't pity me!" At the same time, Firenza says,
"I don't pity her!"
"Well she should," Ashley says, "Because you're a pitiful person!"
"Girls, go to the principal's office right now!" Mr. Nosa says. We spend the last ten minutes of class waiting the Big Line of Tormentors (The BLT).

Ashley says, and they walk off the bus, giggling in that I control the world tone that I hear all to often from people like Kathy Flide and Dani Beck (snowegoof, if you're reading this, I totally did the Kathy and Dani thing on purpose).
