Whipstersh 11-06-2007, 11:17 AM Heck I've never heard of Blackle. Was it an early search engine??
It is newer than google, and is basically the same thing except it supposedly saves your computer energy.
PancakesWithSyrup 11-06-2007, 01:40 PM Heh, Kewl. Blackle. Sounds kewl. And yeah, google's the home page on this computer o_o Well some eMachines powered by google or google powered by eMachines thing.

Its ran by google. At the bottom it says : Google Custon Search
Whipstersh 11-10-2007, 03:44 PM lol i just used google to search Blackle!
EDIT!
Its ran by google. At the bottom it says : Google Custon Search
You would be correct. I realized this after seeing my Google options being placed in here as well.
gabyta 11-10-2007, 05:59 PM ppl started to use the word google as a generic way to say "search on the internet". - Let's google it :)
Orangemarker 11-10-2007, 10:35 PM ppl started to use the word google as a generic way to say "search on the internet". - Let's google it :)
Google was added to the dictionary as a verb because of its usage like that.
SafariLyssaOnVMK 11-11-2007, 12:16 AM Google was added to the dictionary as a verb because of its usage like that.
I looked it up. This is what it said:
A trademark used for an Internet search engine. This trademark often occurs in print as a verb, sometimes in lowercase: "A high school English teacher ... recently Googled a phrase in one student's paper and found it had been taken from a sample essay of an online editing service"
poloshia 11-12-2007, 10:38 PM POLOSHOA'S Fact of the Week!

Fact #4: DID YOU KNOW? The first VCR was made in 1956 and was the size of a piano?
It's True!
Disneyzoodude 11-13-2007, 12:14 AM wow lol! :D Thats big
snowegoof 11-13-2007, 12:19 AM A Grand Piano?
Whipstersh 11-13-2007, 12:19 AM So, now we can accurately say that pianos in 1956 were as big as VCRs? That will certainly confuse some people ;)
Mooshu 11-13-2007, 12:33 AM Egad.
Was the video the same size as it is today?
katiecub 11-13-2007, 01:23 AM lol i bet most of them are from my teacher. she goes on there a lot. LOL:)

http://neatorama.cachefly.net/images/2007-02/walt-disney-oscar-snow-white.jpg Check this pic out. Guess these famous people are with their wooden oscars?
poloshia 11-27-2007, 11:20 PM I'm not really sure if the Oscars Disney has are wooden, but the picture of Edgar Bergen (above) is the only picture of an official wooden Oscar I could find. I found no information of anybody else getting a wooden Oscar, which is very strange. Well, if there is other wooden Oscars, I wonder why they always talk about Edgar Bergen's. They also said that it had a moveable mouth. :D
MadCrazyTurtle 11-28-2007, 12:17 AM  woooweee id like a wooden trophy ;)
Whipstersh 11-28-2007, 12:53 AM Quite interesting... Makes good kindling ;)
Destination 11-28-2007, 12:55 AM It's good that they changed them to the way they are now because Im sure it's good for the enviroment and for the people who got splinters ;)
poloshia 11-28-2007, 01:02 AM I doubt they had tapes...
Destination 11-28-2007, 01:05 AM ZOMG! The size of a piano?!! How big was the TV? Like the size of your house?!!?
MadCrazyTurtle 11-28-2007, 02:20 AM i wonder who madee the trophies... a lumberjack perhaps? ;)
Destination 11-28-2007, 03:02 AM Nope, Mr.Woodchip
mrmyth 11-28-2007, 07:26 AM I'm not really sure if the Oscars Disney has are wooden, but the picture of Edgar Bergen (above) is the only picture of an official wooden Oscar I could find. I found no information of anybody else getting a wooden Oscar, which is very strange. Well, if there is other wooden Oscars, I wonder why they always talk about Edgar Bergen's. They also said that it had a moveable mouth. :D
Perhaps only his was since he was famous for having the wooden dummy.
RockieRoad 11-29-2007, 12:36 AM But wouldn't that be creepy?
It would just be staring at you...I'm scared just thinking about it...
~DisneyRoxie~
Destination 11-29-2007, 02:48 AM It's still the same scaryness with the "metal" kinds these days . . . . . lol
Extras 11-29-2007, 05:08 AM I'd burn it. Dummies freak me out. Heh.. get it? "Dummies"... Heh? Uh.. Get it yet?
Destination 11-29-2007, 06:29 AM I wouldn't burn it, because like what if it haunts you? LOL
poloshia 12-03-2007, 10:48 PM POLOSHOA'S Fact of the Week!
Just to give me something to do I will be giving a fact every Monday of the week, every week of the year, every year of the decade, and, if VMK is still around, every decade of the century. Ok, here goes.
Fact#7: DID YOU KNOW? An ostrich's eye is bigger than it's brain?
http://www.hickerphoto.com/data/media/40/ostrich-pictures_646.jpg
It's True!
Whipstersh 12-03-2007, 11:00 PM Looks like I'm not the only mammalian that has this problem.... ;)
If anyone catches it...
Destination 12-03-2007, 11:08 PM LOLZ!!! Wow, there dumb! LOL Im Joking! That reminds me of Homer Simpson! ;)
MadCrazyTurtle 12-03-2007, 11:12 PM small brain :D does that mean that their egg is like bigger than its brain too?! ostriches lay eggs right? >_<
poloshia 12-03-2007, 11:14 PM Hi Mad! and yes they lay HUGE eggs.
MasterMario 12-03-2007, 11:32 PM I can tell! That's crazy!
monkeyfunkychunky 12-04-2007, 01:42 AM LOLZ!!! Wow, there dumb! LOL Im Joking! That reminds me of Homer Simpson! ;)
No, Homer Simpson hates every chimpanzee from chimpan-a to chimpan-z.
Pretty wild!
poloshia 12-05-2007, 03:35 AM I just thought this was the perfect picture! I reminds me so much of emus! I love emus!!
Extras 12-05-2007, 06:07 AM Knew this one ;)
poloshia 12-10-2007, 11:36 PM POLOSHOA'S Fact of the Week!
Just to give me something to do I will be giving a fact every Monday of the week, every week of the year, every year of the decade, and, if VMK is still around, every decade of the century. Ok, here goes.
Fact#8: DID YOU KNOW? If you are struck by lightning, your skin will be heated to 28,000 degrees Centigrade, hotter than the surface of the Sun?
http://www.cynical-c.com/archives/bloggraphics/lightningST_600x450.jpg http://1heckofaguy.com/wp-content/photos/258px-Lightning_striking_the_Eiffel_Tower_-_NOAA.jpg
It's True!
snowegoof 12-10-2007, 11:40 PM Oh my... and people have survived that!
Whipstersh 12-10-2007, 11:41 PM So if you survive a bolt of lightning... that would be painful :xshocked:
poloshia 12-10-2007, 11:51 PM Well, I think it happens so fast your body is only 28,000 for a few milliseconds and all it does bruise is and leave burns on the skin. It could do more damage, but a lot of people survive lightning strikes.
Extras 12-11-2007, 12:12 AM This is my favorite fact next to the ostrich one :)
sktrchick95 12-11-2007, 02:35 AM *jaw drops* Wow.
My nana told me about how when I was really little, maybe before I was born, these two teenage boys were standin next to a tree, watching lightning during a storm. They were both struc by the lightning, and both had to be put in the hospital. For some reason they were put in jail...
MyBlueStitch 12-11-2007, 05:52 PM wow that's amazing. :-O
Heh good thing the chances of that are..uh...like a million something to one.
poloshia 12-11-2007, 08:28 PM Well, I'm not really sure if this fact is really true but it seemed realistic to me. But you have watch out for facts like "coco-cola would be green if they did not add colouring" which is actually not true even though it is on about every fact site on the web.
OstrichSam 12-11-2007, 08:38 PM Ouch! Wow, I never knew that
MadCrazyTurtle 12-11-2007, 10:28 PM just last night i was making static electricity!! its pretty fun :) ooh what if you got like a tan from the lightning cause of the hotter of the sun and yea. :D
poloshia 12-18-2007, 12:45 AM POLOSHOA'S Fact of the Week!
Just to give me something to do I will be giving a fact every Monday of the week, every week of the year, every year of the decade, and, if VMK is still around, every decade of the century. Ok, here goes.
Theme: Astromony and the Earth
Fact#9: DID YOU KNOW? It would take a modern spaceship 32,000 years to get to the nearest star to earth?
30657
The relative size of Proxima Centauri (the closest star to our sun) compared to its nearest neighbors. So, it would take 32,000 years to travel to Proxima Centauri in modern spacecraft. Proxima Centauri is on the very right campared to our sun. (Ignore the two in the middle).
It's True!
MadCrazyTurtle 12-18-2007, 01:01 AM WHOAH so like after we die the rocket will still be out there going towards a star! and after our kids are dead and our grand kids and our great grand kids and so on!!
poloshia 12-18-2007, 01:02 AM LOL yup! .....
Acefunky_girl 12-18-2007, 01:16 AM interesting :xshocked::xmikec:
DanaAirFairy 12-18-2007, 01:31 AM wow.i now if we could just figure out how to do suspended animation... everything would be good =]
MyBlueStitch 12-18-2007, 03:36 AM that is so amazing. I love stuff like that.
poloshia 12-18-2007, 11:10 PM I'm obsessed with astronomy @_@
Destination 12-18-2007, 11:35 PM LOL! You'll be like ghosts going to the star ;)-
Jacques 12-18-2007, 11:43 PM Close. That's more like a round trip time. It would only take half that to reach Proxima Centauri.
The distance to Proxima Centauri is:
(4.22 ly) × (9.46 × 1012 km/ly) = 4.0 × 1013 km
A year is about 32 million seconds, so completing the journey in 32,000 years (or ~1011 seconds) would require a (non-relativistic) velocity of
(4.0 × 1013 km) / (1.0 × 1012 seconds) = 40 km/s
LaughingStar 12-18-2007, 11:56 PM The distance to Proxima Centauri is:
(4.22 ly) × (9.46 × 1012 km/ly) = 4.0 × 1013 km
A year is about 32 million seconds, so completing the journey in 32,000 years (or ~1011 seconds) would require a (non-relativistic) velocity of
(4.0 × 1013 km) / (1.0 × 1012 seconds) = 40 km/swow i didnt understand any of that (even the english part hehehe)
FabMariah 12-19-2007, 12:04 AM did u no an average girl puts on 6 pounds of lip gloss or lip stick per year??
Jacques 12-19-2007, 12:50 AM wow i didnt understand any of that (even the english part hehehe)
Heh. It is a bit advanced. Let me try to sort this out for you (I may make errors. Forgive me.)
The distance to Proxima Centauri is:
4.22 light years
There are (9.46 × 1012 km/ly) {kilometers per light year} which equals aprroximately 4.0 × 1013 kilometers {400,000,000,000,000 kilometers} to Proxima Centauri.
A year is about 32 million seconds, so completing the journey in 32,000 years (or ~1011 seconds) would require a (non-relativistic) velocity of (4.0 × 1013 km {the distance}) / (1.0 × 1012 seconds {the number of seconds in 32,000 years}) = 40 km/s {kilometers per second}
MadCrazyTurtle 12-19-2007, 03:01 AM that last post confused me... my head! it burns! :(
Jacques 12-19-2007, 03:31 AM Math is good! Math is our friend!
rockclimbing 12-19-2007, 01:25 PM oo i might be a little late but
70k or 32k years....... O_O
( the first one you posted jacques about this thread.. confused me )
ty for clearing it up
Yay astronomy
Jacques 12-19-2007, 02:48 PM Hope it helped. I had to figure it out myself in order to clarify it. ;-)
sunnyskye 12-19-2007, 02:57 PM Heh.

It's a good thing we have the forums. Imagine trying to explain that in VMK!
I understand it a little more, but I'm in Algebra I, not Physics or Astronomy. lol
Jacques 12-19-2007, 03:29 PM It's hard enough explaining it here! ;-)
The equation breaks down to (fastest speed we can go) x (distance we need to travel) = (the time it takes to get there)
LadyMaria 12-19-2007, 08:19 PM Math is good! Math is our friend!
I don't think he likes me all that much ;)
xD
Jacques 12-19-2007, 08:58 PM Actually, math was one of my worst subjects. But science was my favorite, so I had to learn one to do the other.
poloshia 12-19-2007, 10:56 PM Well, maybe this fact came from an old source. lol I'll change it immediately.
I think what Jacques means is that the distance from Earth to Proxima Centauri is 4.22 light years
4.22 light years = ~24,807,799,074,835 miles
So, a modern spacecraft will take about 32,000 years to travel a total distance of about 24,807,799,074,835 miles :)
I hope I'm right lol
Jacques 12-20-2007, 06:52 AM You are correct. :-)
poloshia 12-23-2007, 09:56 PM LOL This is the most non-understandable Fact Of The Week yet it is the most viewed Fact Of The Week.
just a question but how long have you been doing this "Fact Of The Week"?
poloshia 12-24-2007, 06:09 PM POLOSHOA'S Fact of the Week!
Theme: Astronomy and the Earth
Just to give me something to do, I will be giving a fact every Monday of the week, every week of the year, every year of the decade, and, if VMK is still around, every decade of the century. Ok, here goes.
Fact#10: DID YOU KNOW? If you dug a well to the centre of the Earth (the inner core), and dropped a brick in it, it would take 45 minutes to get to the bottom – about 4,000 miles down?
30658
It's True!
I've been doing these for about 10 weeks
MadCrazyTurtle 12-25-2007, 11:07 PM hah cool lets drop a feather and see how long that takes!
Mooshu 12-25-2007, 11:16 PM Wow, that's really interesting!
hah cool lets drop a feather and see how long that takes!
Lol, Oh my.
DanaAirFairy 12-25-2007, 11:29 PM Nope never knew anyyyyyy of that =)
Whipstersh 12-26-2007, 03:24 PM I suppose that wouldn't be considering how fast it would melt either ;)
hah cool lets drop a feather and see how long that takes!
Due to the heat and steam rising from the vents under the crust and mantle of the Earth, we might find it easier to try and find how fast the feather can fly up the hole we dug!
poloshia 12-26-2007, 07:42 PM Exactly Whipstersh! I'm sure a feather wouldn't reach the bottom or come back to the top. It would be roasted before it even came close to the center.
Destination 12-26-2007, 07:47 PM LOL! Wow, 45 minutes of Free Fall. LOL ;) That's a nice fact! ;)
MadCrazyTurtle 12-26-2007, 09:26 PM then we can drop a polo's new xbox 360 down ;)
Capn_Brain 12-26-2007, 09:42 PM POLOSHOA'S Fact of the Week!
Just to give me something to do I will be giving a fact every Monday of the week, every week of the year, every year of the decade, and, if VMK is still around, every decade of the century. Ok, here goes.
Fact#9: DID YOU KNOW? It would take a modern spaceship 32,000 years to get to the nearest star to earth?
30482
The relative size of Proxima Centauri (the closest star to our sun) compared to its nearest neighbors. So, it would take 32,000 years to travel to Proxima Centauri in modern spacecraft. Proxima Centauri is on the very right campared to our sun. (Ignore the two in the middle).
It's True!
but.....the sun is the closest to star to the earth.... ^_^
poloshia 12-31-2007, 07:56 PM What I meant was the closest star to Earth besides the sun
strikemaster 12-31-2007, 07:59 PM What I meant was the closest star to Earth besides the sin
Besides the sin? Did you mean sun? lol interesting facts!

Fact#11: DID YOU KNOW? An asteroid wiped out every single dinosaur in the world, but not a single species of toad or salamander was affected. No one knows why, nor why the crocodiles and tortoises survived?
30654
Illustration of the impact of an asteroid a few kilometers across. Such impacts are expected to occur less often than every 100 million years.
It's True!
MadCrazyTurtle 12-31-2007, 08:22 PM yea go tortoises!
Salgal 01-01-2008, 12:43 AM Yeah, thats really weird..

Fact#12: DID YOU KNOW? If a piece of the sun the size of a pinhead were to be placed on Earth, you could not safely stand within 90 miles of it?
30865
If my calculations are correct, the surface of the sun is 9,940.73 Farenheit. If they meant a piece of the sun from the core the temperature of that one piece would be 28,259,540.33 Farenheit
It's True!
So much for taking a souvenir from the sun. lol.
MadCrazyTurtle 01-08-2008, 12:25 AM so if you threw a soda can within the 90 miles then it would melt? and if you threw yourself within the 90 miles you'll get burned?? and if you stick out a pot of water then it would boil?? and if you put an egg in the water it would cook?

sunnyskye 01-11-2008, 10:54 PM I suppose that wouldn't be considering how fast it would melt either ;)
Due to the heat and steam rising from the vents under the crust and mantle of the Earth, we might find it easier to try and find how fast the feather can fly up the hole we dug!
But if you want it to fly up you have to get it to the bottom lol.
Hey poloshia, how do you know the dinosaurs were wiped out by an asteroid? Was there an asteroid marked "On this day all dinosaurs were killed."?

Jacques 01-12-2008, 03:24 AM how do you know the dinosaurs were wiped out by an asteroid? Was there an asteroid marked "On this day all dinosaurs were killed."?
Something like that, actually. The asteroid in question was rich in iridium, and material not commonly found on earth. Going through fossil records near the crater, there is a layer of iridium near the same layer where most dinosaurs died (which indicates it was around the same time period). The asteroid impact was so great, that it threw a very large amount of dust and debris up into the atmosphere, blocking out the sun (this happens on a small scale during volcanic eruptions and wild fires). The earth's temperature dropped, and most cold-blooded reptiles were not able to withstand the cold. Warm-blooded creatures such as mammals, however, were able to survive, and then thrive in a world without large predators.

Jacques 03-01-2008, 09:06 AM Well, that's a bit misleading. They have discovered approximately 300 extra-solar planets. All of them are too far away to see, so we can only infer their statistics from their gravitational effect on their suns.

Right. The planet you are referring to is called Gliese 581 C. Keep in mind, scientists can't see this planet from Earth. But they can determine the distance from its star based upon the star's wobble, and can determine that it is within a temperature range similar to the Earth. This planet/star are over 20 light years away. There is currently no way to see this planet from where we are. We may never know (with current technology) what this planet looks like, or if it harbors water/life.

Astronomers have found the most Earth-like planet outside our Solar System to date, a world which could have water running on its surface. The planet orbits the faint star Gliese 581, which is 20.5 light-years away in the constellation Libra.
Jacques 03-11-2008, 03:50 PM Yes, I'm aware of the specs of the planet. My point is, that it can not be viewed from Earth. That photo is an artistic representation, and not the actual planet. There is currently no way to tell whether or not the planet has water. It just falls within the temperature range that would allow it.

The word "buccaneer" comes from the word boucan, meat prepared in a manner similar to modern barbeque. Pirates were in the habit of going to Hispaniola and other islands, hunting semi-wild cattle and boars and cooking the meat over an open flame. Just to give me something to do I will be giving a fact every Friday of the week, every week of the year, every year of the decade, and, if VMK is still around, every decade of the century. Ok, here goes.
Fact#25: DID YOU KNOW? Hawaii is moving towards Japan at the speed of 10 centimeters a year? This is because they are on different tectonic plates.
It's True!

Just to give me something to do I will be giving a fact every Friday of the week, every week of the year, every year of the decade, and, if VMK is still around, every decade of the century. Ok, here goes.
Fact#26: DID YOU KNOW? The earth isn't perfectly round? It is slightly fattened at the north and south poles.

Why only one fact a week? I made it once a week so we could discuss the fact, and post similar facts about the current one posted.
MadCrazyTurtle 04-12-2008, 05:02 AM oooh so in like 938402938409238490238492 years, hawaii might be japan!
poloshia 04-12-2008, 05:09 AM I don't think Earth will be here anymore in that many years LOL
sktrchick95 04-12-2008, 06:30 AM Earth will probably still exsist in that many years, but there won't be any form of life that can live without the sun. By then, the sun will have gone out, and every form of life will die within 8 minutes of the sun going dead. (Just recently learned about light in science, and this is basically what my teacher said. It takes about 8 minutes for the light to reach the Earth, so It'll take that long for us to notice that the sun went dead.) But, none of us that is living right now will actually be alive. I doub't that anyone could live for another 4 billion? years. That's be pretty insane. And awesome...
Basically, the sun will go out in a little under about 4 billion years, we won't get the light waves that we need to see, we won't get the ultraviolet waves that we need for our skin, and we won't get the infrared waves that we need for natural heat. So, really, if the sun were to die right now, we could all wear all the clack that we possibly could, but we still wouldn't get any heat, because there wouldn't be any infrared waves for the chemicals in the fabric would absorb. But that'll take 8 minutes to happen, and after that 8 minutes, everyone on the earth would die instantly. (I think)*Coninues mumbling on and on and on about light* @@ Did I repeat myself at all? Cause I'm sometimes completly ignorant and don't notice if I repeat myself when explaining something I know a lot about...
(OMG!!! Now I understand my A in science!!! And I feel like I just gave a science lesson.......)
poloshia 04-12-2008, 05:41 PM I believe the Earth is going to be destroyed by the sun itself.

Jacques 04-12-2008, 06:13 PM It would take a bit more than 8 minutes for all life to be snuffed out. That is how long it would take for us to know the sun has gone out, but the Earth has a stored amount of heat in its atmosphere and core. Sure it would get very cold very fast, but not instantaneously. And Poloshia is correct, when the sun dies out, it will expand. And swallow up at least the first three planets, if not Mars as well.
Glad I won't be around to see it. ;)
prinsess_chloe 04-12-2008, 08:16 PM polo... You have brains:) Mind if i post a fact next week?

Heh... I forgot about that part. I knew there was too much knowledge in my head... Either that or I'm even more tired then I thought I would be by the time eighth period science comes around. Probably too tired to pay attention to those details when my teacher told us about the sun expanding, but she never told us about the Eath haveing heat sored up or whatever... Wait. My History teacher told me about the sun dying out eventually and how it'll expand and whatnot. No wonder why I couldn't remember that part......
Glad I won't be around when this happens, too. Although I fear death, so.... At least there's one good thing about dying, right?
hmmm........ For some reason I want to know what it would be like to be frozen alive... (Don't ask. Please don't ask. lol)

Why would the sun die? lol sorry but that sounds hard to believe. And 4 billion years? Haha good luck, the earth isn't going to be around that long.
Jacques 04-12-2008, 10:26 PM Why would the sun die? lol sorry but that sounds hard to believe. And 4 billion years? Haha good luck, the earth isn't going to be around that long.
The sun runs on fuel, like any source of energy. When that fuel runs out, the sun will swell to many times its current size, and then its gravity will cause it to condense. They estimate 4 billion years based upon observations of other stars close in size. Stars burn out all the time. We can see some of them as supernovae.
And as far as the Earth goes, no reason to assume it won't still be around. The Earth is estimated at 4.6 billion years old. It's not going anywhere. :)
MadCrazyTurtle 04-12-2008, 11:32 PM i think earth will go BOOM! when the sun goes BOOM! and burns up everything in its path. maybe itll be like the big bang and create a mini solar system ;)
poloshia 04-13-2008, 05:53 PM LOL Mad I don't think our sun will explode

LRGoalie 04-13-2008, 06:11 PM Earth is a Oblete Speriod. It was almost perfectly round, except it is wider at the equators. LOL Go Science Class!

YourFootsteps 04-16-2008, 11:50 PM POLOSHOA'S Fact of the Week!
Theme: Astronomy and the Earth
Just to give me something to do, I will be giving a fact every Monday of the week, every week of the year, every year of the decade, and, if VMK is still around, every decade of the century. Ok, here goes.
It's True!
With that fact, the bottom part that I bolded, so 100 years from when the dinos were wiped from existence, then 100 million years from then, whatever life species is on the planet, would be wiped out?
*hides behind a big giant huge protective shield-powered rock*
TinkTaylor 04-17-2008, 12:26 AM Earth is a Oblete Speriod. It was almost perfectly round, except it is wider at the equators. LOL Go Science Class!

Its acctually 3 inches
poloshia 04-17-2008, 03:47 AM I believe that only happens to stars much more larger than our sun. Like a supergiant.
but i thought the sun was gonna get so old it was gonna go BOOM!
LRGoalie 04-17-2008, 03:52 AM I believe that only happens to stars much more larger than our sun. Like a supergiant.
Actually, eventually the sun, which is a star, will explode. But it will be in millions of year. So don't worry.
poloshia 04-17-2008, 04:01 AM The Sun does not have enough mass to explode in a supernova.
Actually, eventually the sun, which is a star, will explode. But it will be in millions of year. So don't worry.

Well, more like the sun will expand into a Red Giant, and then condense into a White Dwarf. There will be no explosion.
