DiveQuest is just one of the possible adventures awaiting Disney Guests.

Best-Kept Secrets of the Disney Parks

You've come, you've seen, you've experienced. Every Disney Park has its "must-dos." Soarin' Over California. Mission: SPACE. The Haunted Mansion. Expedition Everest. Pirates of the Caribbean. If you're a real Disney aficionado, you may have visited them dozens of times over the years.

While Space Mountain and Rockin' Roller Coaster never get old, there's another side to the Disney Parks – unique experiences that you might not even know exist. Here's our guide to some of the lesser-known treasures of Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort – from once-in-a-lifetime wildlife experiences to dining opportunities like no others. Some of these attractions and events involve reservations and additional fees – others just require that you seek them out.

GO BEHIND THE SCENES

One of the biggest treats you can have at a Disney Park is a look at the magic behind the magic. In addition to the well-known (and wonderful) tours like Walk in Walt's Footsteps, there's a wide range of activities that let you take part in the Disney experience.

Learn how the master artists create animated films at Disney's California Adventure Park's Animation Academy. You'll see how cel animation is created, step by step, and even learn how to draw Disney Characters yourselves in this hands-on experience.

See Epcot as you've never seen it before with a Segway tour – these experiences let Guests zip through the Park on the space-age ergonomic people movers. To stop, start, and steer, just lean, and the Segway knows what to do. Walt would have loved them!

Meet some four-legged Cast Members at Walt Disney World's Tri Circle D Ranch – this experience combines a petting zoo with the chance to meet the majestic horses who work at the Parks of Walt Disney World Resort, while they're relaxing off-duty. And if this inspires Guests with a yen to saddle up, there are horseback riding opportunities for the big buckaroos, and pony rides for the little ones.

I DIDN'T KNOW YOU COULD DO THAT AT DISNEY

If architecture's your passion, you can take an Arts and Crafts walking tour through Disneyland Resort's magnificent Disney's Grand Californian Hotel, with a docent who can talk you through the history and fine points of the distinctive architectural movement that inspired the building.

Also at Disney's California Adventure, educate your palate at the Terrace **** Tasting. Sample different varietals – **** experts are on hand to answer your questions and help you get the most out of the experience.

If you feel a need for speed, learn to drive a race car like the masters. Sign up for the Richard Petty Driving Experience at the Walt Disney World Speedway and you'll find yourself behind the wheel of a 358-cubic-inch V-8 NASCAR Cup-style stock car packing 600 horsepower, with a mile-long track before you.

MAKE A SPLASH

A refreshing dip can be a must in sunny Florida or Southern California, and there are all kinds of fun ways to get wet. If you stay at the Disneyland Hotel, don't miss the Never Land Pool, a 5,000-square-foot pool area themed to Disney's "Peter Pan," full of fun and surprises, complete with pirate ship.

Of course, nothing offers a get-soaked experience like a water park, and Walt Disney World Resort boasts two – Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach. They're both loaded with cool – and WET – attractions, offering experiences from an out-and-out thrilling plunge down a twisting chute to a leisurely and relaxing float in an inner tube. We're particularly impressed with Typhoon Lagoon's Crush 'n' Gusher, an amazing uphill water coaster. Think water doesn't run uphill? At Typhoon Lagoon, it does!

At Disneyland Park, the majestic clipper ship and paddle wheeler plying the Rivers of America are impossible to miss – less obtrusive water craft are the canoes (propelled by Guests and Cast Members working together) and the Rafts to Tom Sawyer Island. Those rafts, however, deposit you in a destination unique in the Park – an island honeycombed with caves, secret passages, precarious bridges, forts, and surprises. Kids who need to burn off a little steam running around LOVE Tom Sawyer Island … as do kids at heart. And now the island has been overtaken by pirates, adding a new layer of fun. Guests can search for treasure, explore new pirate theming on the island, and even encounter pirates in the flesh!

If you're looking for the aquatic experience of a lifetime – something you'll never forget – there are a few spectacular options at Walt Disney World Resort. Guests who visit Epcot are often stunned by the beauty of the undersea environments of The Living Seas attraction – but only a few venture into those environments in scuba gear, courtesy of the DiveQuest program, which gives scuba-certified Guests the chance to explore surrounded by marine life of all kinds. If interacting with dolphins is your dream, Epcot also offers the Dolphins in Depth tour, where Guests enter the water to learn about the intelligent mammals and meet them face to face.

On your next trip to a Disney Resort, whether you hug a draft horse or take the plunge at a Water Park, try something new and off the beaten path – you might discover a whole new way to enjoy the happiest places on Earth.
