High School Musical 3 is a planned second sequel in Disney Channel's High School Musical franchise, slated for release in 2008.[1][2] According to Oren Aviv, president of production for Walt Disney Motion Pictures Group, this film will debut in movie theaters.

Aviv confirmed that Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Lucas Grabeel, Monique Coleman, and Corbin Bleu are all in talks of reprising their roles for a third time. [4] The original plot, which was to have been titled Haunted High School Musical, was to have centered around spooky happenings at East High. This idea has been s****ped, although strange things happening will be a side plot, the movie will center around East High's senior prom and graduation of this class.[citation needed]Disney Channel Worldwide president of entertainment, Gary Marsh, said of High School Musical 3, "We're working on a script and talking to talent. ... We're hopeful and optimistic we'll pull everybody back together." [5]

On August 14, 2007, Kenny Ortega said that the movie will begin production around March 2008 and may be in theaters either October 2008 or 2009.[citation needed].

It is reported that Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, and Ashley Tisdale are all refusing to start production until their salaries are raised. Efron has reportedly been offered $2.75 million while the others have been offered $1 million to appear in the movie, set for the big screen next year. Rumors are running rampant that Efron will walk from the movie and, if he does, others may follow him. An insider told the press, "Zac’s telling the other actors to make sure they get what they deserve[6] It has also been reported that Efron, Tisdale, and Hudgens were holding out until their salaries were raised [7].

But I am NOT surprised Zac gets offered more money for the movie. If I was Ashley or Vannesa I would be steaming. He gets a whole 1.7 Million dollars more. I wonder what Lucas, Corbin, and Monquie get. Zac doesn't need more money from HSM, he did Hairspray and may star in TWO films in the next year or two. Etheir way, I doubt anyone will walk from the movie. They get money off of CDs and DVD sales also, and (probably) money everytime HSM or HSM2 is played on Disney Channel. Etheir way, I can see why Vannesa and Ashley think it's unfair, Zac just needs to take the money he was offered and move on.

yea well i think they are ruining putting it in theaters it kinda takes away from the other 2 and i wouldn't go see it i would watch it if it premiered on disney like the others....

I would refuse to see it if Zac got the that much more money for the third one. Vanessa and Zac and Ashley and Lucas should get paid the same since they are in alot of scenes. Everyone else should get paid a bit less :) Also I don't think Zac is that great of an actor. The rest are amazing.

Well.. i think Zac needs to calm his little greedy hands down. He has made so much $ from the first HSM dvd sales and cd sales. Then there is HSM 2 which he has made alot of $ from the cd and when the DVD release it will be a success. Then there ius Hairpsray!!! The theater sales and Cd sales are all success. And then when the DVD comes out that will be a big hit too! So yea he needs to chill...As for Ashley and Vanessa, if Zac gets as much as he wants then they should get that much too along with Lucas because they are the four LEAD roles. Anywho yea...

My BFFs and I are already sorta planning to see it all together and my cousin already knows what she'll wear even though it will probably be outta style and wouldn't fit by the time it was out lol.
