Once again the no-win argument of re-releasing things has come up with the Princess Dress Blue and boy's Crown. All of you that bought it with the hopes of holding onto something you could eventually trade up with are dissapointed. (Been there). Of course those that did not save ahead of time or are new feel it's GREAT when they get another chance at something that you planned ahead for.(I know new players had no idea).
Here is how you make both sides happy and it's very simple. COLOR! By just changing the color of previous releases and not bringing out past colors you can still maintain the rarity of an object but not deprive others from eventually buying it too.
I know it's not a new idea and things of a different color already have different degrees of rarity in VMK (rockets/explorer/beta items...).
I just wish going forward we would see maybe a Purple Princess Minnie Hat instead of living in fear/waiting to trade everything away to get a hat that could be released again for no reason. What's next Princess dresses being released in Nemo month?

i undertsnad what your saying! i love your idea!

but for the rare part, vmk was made to have fun, not to be " the rarest in the kingdom"

Everyone has their own thoughts of what is fun -
Some play games,
Some make rooms,
Some follow friends around,
Some like to trade...
To each their own.

yeah, but the reason most people leave, is because vmk is " losing there magic" ( which i think isn't a very good reason to leave :l ) is because all people care about is tarding for rare virtuals.

that's a good idea, but I didn't know princess hats were rare. I have a spare and I barely wear one as it is.

Is it worth as much as stitch?

not as much as stitch, i believe it's second rarest after that

I think this is a great idea. I'm living in fear right now that they're about to re-release the minnie hat. then every new girl will be wearing it, and the hat will become worthless. I know it's not all about rare and whtever, but it's nice to have something that not EVERYBODY has.

My other thought with pins is if they release them again, give them a different color border.

Me personally, I find items with different colors to be different items. For example, a lot of my friends have the pink beret, but some of them don't have a black beret. What's the difference? Well, the black beret is nicer for boys IMO and goes great with my look as opposed to pink.

I am still up with VMK to release different color items.

I agree with this idea. I, personally, only want the Backwards Trucker Cap(Flip Hat) because it looks awesome, I wouldn't care if it was in a different color.

Plus, some people love to trade. It's their passion. It would be kind of heartbreaking to trade a bunch of items for a hat and then have a bunch of Guests wearing the hat the next day.

I agree with this idea 100%, now I have to admit, I was one of those people who was bummed when I missed an item, but then it was re-released. But still, the idea of old items being on sale again is killing it's value. Not only that, but some VMKers traded a lot of items to get a few rarer items, only to find that the items they traded for are going to be re-released in the next few weeks. VMK should STOP THE MADNESS, and maybe post a poll so everyone has their say if an item is to be re-released...just my 2 cents.

What a fabulous idea mrmyth. It rewards those of us who have put in our time at VMK, yet it also gives new players fun items too.

yeah great idea :)

im all for the other aspects of vmk too, but I am also a fan of trading and the problem with rereleaseing is basically only a problem to traders... like I know a lot of my friends traded lots of rare for their rocket couches..some even worked hard and traded a lot of good rare stuff to get all colors...then to find out that vmk has rereleased them again, and for so little credits!! well all I can say is that they were bummed and disheartened for all the time and effort they spent trading for those items..

I don't mind the release of items in a different color. But I really get so frustrated with people being so concerned about having to have rare items. People saying they are so angry or heartbroken over rereleases is difficult for me to hear. I have known anger and heartbreak but not over VMK, over stuff in real life. I guess its a matter of perspective.

We recently had a poll, and most of the people of VMKF have been around longer rather than shorter on VMK. I wonder how that colors perspectives here (the general perspective, not talking about individuals).

If your enjoyment of VMK depends on having rare items, then prepare to be heartbroken or angry on occasion.

Would I mind if I didn't have a certain color of a rare item (like flip or Minnie hat)? No, as others have mentioned it is more the style that I like. On the other hand, some of the more specialized hats are desirable as they are...(for us, I am thinking of the bird hat). I would love it if they made that more available (for someone who can't visit the parks) because my young son has wanted one since he started playing (still working on that one). (and for some of you who think, well just trade up, keep in mind that that is very difficult and time-consuming for the new player and yes, its our choice not to spend our whole lives on VMK trying to do so but many of you came at the items a lot easier).

I have rare items and I've said this before, I enjoy using them, wearing them, having them, whatever. If they rerelease them all TOMORROW, it won't affect my enjoyment of them at all.

Perspective, perspective, where you are on this issue seems to be fairly related to how long you've been on VMK (not saying always true but often true). Look at the poll about VMK tenure and you see how many people are new versus old here.

Well, some people like the items for the rareness too. Like wearing a Princess Hat, not many people have that, so when a different color comes out everybody will be wearing one, and they will no longer be unique. Also there are many different pairs of flips, but people really want the Green Flips, because it is rare.

Imagine.. Rainbow Princess.. Crown with diffrent jewels.. Crowns aren't really rare anymore almost everyone has them, I see poor people with them. People are tired of them and give them away in falling chairs as prize for fun or for free! That's another reason they should change style ir color.

Hee hee, no I'm not arguing with you. I know people seek them because they're rare. That's kind of the point, no? I get that! (i'm just saying you're kind of messed up (and you can substitute another word if you wish LOL) if you just like green.)

Perspective yes I agree. Let's look at it this way-

(and for some of you who think, well just trade up, keep in mind that that is very difficult and time-consuming for the new player and yes, its our choice not to spend our whole lives on VMK trying to do so but many of you came at the items a lot easier).

Since you do not have the time to put in as is your choice, you feel that everything should be freely given/sold to all, even if those of us with it had to put in the time and effort to get it. We were all new once. Not a valid excuse.
Sometimes if you want something you work for it or go without. How it came easy to us - there I'm lost.
Personally I have never been to a Disney park since I have been on VMK.

(Perspective, perspective, where you are on this issue seems to be fairly related to how long you've been on VMK (not saying always true but often true). Look at the poll about VMK tenure and you see how many people are new versus old here.

Let me see - new people want the stuff so in a poll they vote more for getting it. Not a surprising result.
Still my color sollution makes things available again for newer players while leaving something for players that have been on here longer.

And to all those that say to stop getting upset when an item returns, that is not what VMK is about - You are correct - to a point. It's not ALL about but it is part of it.These are also the people that line up to get the newly re-released item. If it didn't matter why are they voting on it's return?

I never said that everything should be freely given. I find that that is often how people with my view are misquoted in these threads. I said some rereleases. That is hardly everything being freely given.

Secondly, not everyone has hours and hours to spend acquiring items and trading up, nor can everyone get to a park. Many of us do do without because we can't or won't spend hours and hours a day on VMK. My point is not that we want EVERYTHING freely given to us. But some rereleases on occasion make SOME items accessible. I don't understand why that is so threatening to people. Just as you say I make the choice not to spend hours trying to trade up, you make the choice to do so when you know items can and do get rereleased. Either choice is just that, a choice. We all know the rereleases happen on occasion. We all make our choices despite that (or because of that, whatever).

My point about obtained easily is for those people who bought the rare items when they were initially released...i.e., who bought the green flips at Emporium for 25 credits (or whatever they were, its just an example). I DO know not everyone came at the rare items so easily, but some of you have. I know some people choose to spend time and energy trading up for them...I assume you do so because you enjoy that. That's fine, but it does come with risks of rerelease.

The survey I was talking about was NOT asking people if they wanted rerelease, it was the survey that previously asked VMK forums members how long they had been on VMK. If I wasn't so tired, I'd link to the thread. That survey showed that most VMKF members had been on VMK a long time, there were few new members like me. I am saying that VMKF is statistically skewed toward older members, it is not representative of the VMK community in general.

And lastly, hammer me if you will, but I agree with your original point...I have no objection to the releases being released in different colors. I think if you look through my many postings on the subject (and I know you have better things to do) you will see I'm really a "the more the merrier" kind of girl. I'd love a Minnie hat in a variety of colors.

good evening :)

Jazzy - I'm sorry that you are so often misquoted-

everything should be freely given/sold to all

As far as the people that responded to the poll on how long were you a member of VMKF -
I never saw it nor do polls ring true with me since most are not an accurate sampling of the population. I never answer polls and many do not answer/or happen to see each one on a certain day it's up. Time of membership is a relative thing to each. Most I was used to seeing on here have moved on or stopped posting, so to me it appears that there are more new members than old.
Your other point that many have come across rare very easily, by being in the right place at the right time basically, (very few players have green flips which is why they are rare). So just because a new person comes late to the party they deserve to get everything that was ever available?
I get the impression you consider yourself fairly new or at least in time spent on VMK. Where you here during pirates month? Did you buy a costume or two? Welcome to how you build up to get something rare you want down the road. Maybe someone missed the costume or even might be a "New Player" but gets to WDW and has quest to trade.
Really I'm not hammering on you Jazz - Please do not take it as so. You are only person offering a different view, and it's a welcome thing to see. Nobody has to agree with anyone - but they can talk about it.
Good luck Jazz on getting your son's hat. I just hope it's through trades or a different color.

And on a related topic - Lets welcome in Tiki Month with the re-release of the Pan Hat - :banghead:

I understand how to trade up :) I get it. I do buy extra costumes and other items on occasion. I have traded. Rereleases still don't bother me. It doesn't change my enjoyment of the game. There will always be some new people who miss even new releases and those trades remain viable (if perhaps less lucrative).

You misquoted me again when you said the following "they deserve to get everything that was ever available?" I never said that (and if I wanted to quibble I would ask you to show you where I said that). Rather in all of these threads I say, "some rereleases on occasion". That is unfair to me, that you change my argument for me. (I am not saying this to be mean, you aren't the only one who has done it.)

I also welcome the discussion. I just believe in speaking up especially when what I'm saying is being misconstrued.

As to the poll, thing, I know polls aren't representative but that cuts both ways. I still believe that there is an overabundance of older versus new here compared to the actual VMK game. But yes, the poll won't give you actual percentages (btw, the poll grouped people by actual join date in 6-month groupings so it wasn't just how people characterize themselves, it sought an actual start date). I notice many older people on VMK here who have a lot of "rare"; you notice a lot of newer people. Very subjective, yes.

Thank you for the well wishes for my son...yes, I mull over how to get him a hat often and I do think over trades I can do...he has been without one for awhile and I expect he will continue to be without him for awhile more although you never know, maybe something will make sense to us trade-wise. My point in mentioning his hat though is that the bird hat seems different from a Princess Minnie in that its not so easy to change the color of that...but perhaps there is another creative way it can be tweaked to make it different but still attractive as a bird hat to him.

I appreciate the discussion too (and while I'm happy to acquire another older hat in VMK, truthfully the Pan hat wasn't one of my favorites LOL but I suppose the children will like). Already had the Karo and fountains but woot on the Tiki room!

I remember a few months ago everyone was flaming VMK because of making items of different colors. There were threads that said VMK wasn't even trying anymore and that they had "lack of creativity" because all they were doing was releasing the same items, but in different colors.

I agree but the color change is not meant to substitute new items being released. This would be in addition to. I think everyone got mad with the release of the green holiday hat instead of a St. Patricks Day hat. That was a bit lame on the new release department.

This may be a good solution, in theory, but I think what you're failing to take into consideration is that people desire what they can't have. For example, sure, there are some people out there who would be happy and content with any version of the flip hat, regardless of it's color; but, for many others that satisfied feeling of having a new hat would soon give way, once again, to envying the green one. Hence, the complaining continues, and VMK has to either live with upsetting a nation of 9 year olds (i.e. customers), or eventually cave in and give 'em what they want.

Going further with this analogy, we can easily predict that a new and differently colored hat would be ridiculously common, given the number of players on the game now and how they shop. Let's remember that back in VMK's infancy, there obviously weren't that many players, relatively speaking, and so there weren't nearly as many of these items being purchased and put into circulation. Also, people shopped differently. They didn't realize exactly how important it was to stock up on limited release items, because they didn't have any prior experience with trades, there wasn't that much to trade for, and they didn't know the frequency at which VMK would make those items available again. Therefore, the older items have an advantage that newly released items can never duplicate, and as a result will never be as scarce or as coveted.

You also have to keep in mind that different colors of some items simply wouldn't make much sense. I saw in a different post that you suggested they change the color of the Pan hat. But would it even be a Pan hat without being green? Same goes for the Sparrow costume, the Herbie outfit, and Maleficent's horns. The color itself often defines the item and without it being a particular shade, loses it's relevance.

It's basically a no-win situation. You want these items to stay rare because you enjoy having something that is less common and more exclusive; but that's exactly why the majority of players want them as well. They won't rest with a different version of the same costume or hat. For proof of that, you really don't need to look any further than the Gray Haunted Mansion Suit, the Green Explorer Costume, or Green Flips. All of these items are available in identical styles apart from their color and it has done nothing to drive down or eliminate the demand for the rarer versions. It's not nearly the actual item as much as it is the "rarity" of that item, and that rarity is very often directly associated with the color, because that color signifies an item that wasn't widely circulated; as is the case with beta furniture. Nobody could care less about a Purple Mansion Rocker.. but a Red one? Completely different story.

In a perfect world, I wish items would be retired and stay that way. I enjoy the challenge of obtaining rare items, and I have the patience and means to do so. Not true for many of VMK's target audience. So you can understand the constant battle of trying to keep everyone happy. And for better or worse, I think the closest they can come to accomplishing that is by doing what they're doing; releasing an item briefly, retiring it for a spell, letting it grow in worth, allowing people to take advantage of its increased value as new players enter the game, letting excitement and demand grow for it to be re-released, and then making it available again to appease the newer players.

After all, the nature of the entire universe is cyclical--why should our virtual slice of it be any different?

That is why new items would be an important part of this sollution. Lets say all the Alice stuff went away tomorrow. Now there is an entire group of things worth trading up for. You cannot tell me that trading is not an encouraged thing in VMK since they created the trade window. Those that want the exclusive/earlier version work and save and trade up to get it - just like in real life. I never saw them release a classic car again or first edition comic book,(whatever you can relate to), just because new people that have come to appreciate it missed out.

True but a good portion of these players will quit VMK, move onto something else, making their purchases worthless. Some will be banned some will lose interest. Some will save in hopes they can trade up with new players that do not just walk into it. Like rereleases. Also with more players come more people that want a certain item or will trade for it.

Just for the record I never said a color change in the pan hat directly. But I do not see where it could not be altered in some way.

It's basically a no-win situation. You want these items to stay rare because you enjoy having something that is less common and more exclusive; but that's exactly why the majority of players want them as well. Again see above - Sometimes wanting something and deserving it are different things. I'd love to get Inferno eventually but I do not expect it to be handed out to me. I saved and traded to get what I have. I was happy in my black mansion suit but wanted the grey.I worked and traded to eventually get it. I see many new players in trade rooms happy to get the black or brown mansion suits. I'm sure that someday most will want to try to trade for a gray one. That is what makes trading fun. I realize some get discouraged that they cannot get it right away. To bad -that's life.

i agree with mrmyth 100%.
like he said about the people who worked to get the items that really wanted them. ive have never had anything handed to me. i worked for all the stuff i have.

as said before haveing a certian rare item is what makes you unique.its what sets you apart from all the other new comers.

another thing is, if you cant alter a certian item like change the style or color then why not just not re-release it. keep it the way it is and just let it be retired or rare?

i understand that alot of new people would like the old items but hey its not our fault they didnt join when the game originally started. if you want some thing you gotta work for it, nobodys going to just hand you money for doing nothing at your job. same as vmk.

its not that people are selfish and not wanting others to have the item but i mean us old timers gotta have something that no one else has. otherwise what would have been the point of beta? getting a stupid yellow badge?

Myth, I'm not going to break down your response in great detail, because in reality, we're saying the same thing. If you recall my last paragraph, I started by saying I wish retired items would stay retired. I'm with you. You're preaching to the choir. However, keep in mind that comic books and rare cars have actual worth because they're actual items and more work has to be put into reproducing them, as opposed to re-releasing a mass of pixels. You might need to convince the world that virtual items are as valuable as physical items before using that argument. Furthermore, the audience interested in collecting classic cars is radically different than the target audience of VMK. All other comparisons can be thrown out the window unless they deal with having to rely on the happiness of children for the success of their business. And yes, while many adults play VMK, they've made it no secret that children are and always will be their most important focus. Let's also remember that kids are notoriously impatient, and may not be able to rationally comprehend why, in the long run, it's more beneficial for them to learn the virtues of planning, saving, and setting goals on a virtual game. I'm sure in their minds, they get enough "lessons" in home, school, church, and so on. VMK is supposed to be an escape. Is it hypocritical for VMK's main objective to be trading and collecting, while they continue to systematically and routinely destroy worth? Sure. But again, we're talking about kids here. The majority of them couldn't care less about the more complex intricacies of supply and demand in the marketplace and how fragile that balance can be. What they do know is that they want that fancy, "rare" hat that they see the other players wearing; and the bottom line is, VMK is here to entertain, not to educate. In fact, they've made it pretty clear that they don't want any deep thinking going on or the potentially controversial exchange of ideas. Keep the dictionary sparse, the conversation light, and the kids happy. So as long as this game remains what it is, you can bet they will continue to do things how they're doing them--no matter how much we may wish otherwise.

I agree 100% with your idea even tho i am like 4 months new but i think it'd be nice if they brought new color like a blue flip hat and a black flip hat but it'd me wicked sweet if they came out with a blue minnie bc pink or purple watever it is now is really 4x rarer then if they'd come out with a blue 1

I don't mind them being rereleased, because I don't want to be the only one wearing hard to get clothes all the time.
