I don't know. The site seems to have gone down so I can't see the page.

EDIT: Ok. It seems to be some kind of alert thing to let you know of events and newsletter updates.

EDIT 2: Here's a picture of the communicator from the download page:

Nice! It will give you a pop-up if the Newsletter Changes, if the Calendar Changes, Wallpaper Changes, or Screen Saver changes, plus there is new Wall Papers and a new Screen Saver!

It's not that special, it's just the newsletter in a smaller size pretty much, here's some screenshots, http://i108.****************/albums/n28/nikade/xcvxc.jpg

http://i108.****************/albums/n28/nikade/fhgf.jpg,

the thing that bugs me the most, it that it doesn't let you log in vmk! What's the point of all this, if it's not a faster way to log in! And, if anyone understands the network connections, please tell me.

I don't like it. The words are hard to read (on my computer, they seem small). I would rather just go to vmk.com and check for updates.

Its cool.. but it would be even cooler if they put in some mini-games into it and we could play and earn credits even when VMK is closed.

OMG there are bugs ALREADY it doesnt want to save my internet settings/ and the words arent hard to read..

GatorGreen
07-18-2007, 02:04 AM
I'm not going to use it for the most part; the process it runs in the background takes up 27MB of my RAM. That's quite a lot to just check for updates.

Ah... This is like the finding Nemo thing. I like the idea of it a lot, but I'm also finding the words hard to read, because the font is too small.

If you look on the front page of vmk you'll see they posted a new program you can download. This allows you to view events, updates, downloads, and many other things that can help you make your way in vmk.

Sorry if this is posted in wrong section or already posted.

so i guess they see this as a more convenient way to find out whats going on without actually going on the site, the site we need to go on anyway in order to log in.

ah well, it's some-what a good and convenient tool, i guess making this is the reason there hasnt been many new yavn speaks lately?

problem is it freezes up my computer, think it's time to delete this already :(:)

Sonicblur
07-18-2007, 03:34 AM
Well, I tried it out. I must say, it's very basic. But it gets the job done if you want to know when events are or check the newsletter without actually going to the sites. It's pretty cool looking, but all in all, nothing big. However, they could add updates to it if they wanted to, so it shows promise. In the future, it could come in handy for that special something. ;)

uh.. i don't really see the point of this. It doesn't even act like an alarm when events start. It's just the website, just in a new smaller design.

idk it seems like that didn't take much time to make. Pretty simple if you ask me.

The following are my opinions, and my opinions only.

At first, I was pretty excited by the thought of this. I could picture all sorts of ways that they'd make a tool to help us out in VMK.

Unfortunately, this lived up to absolutely none of that.

What is the point of a news viewer when you never update the news!
The "news" that is updated frequently are the front page "headlines" (you know, like the one that told us that VMKC was available) isn't available in VMKC.
The event list is the exact same event list - showing us the times in Pacific time, which may not be our own time zone.
Event alerts look like they tell us when the event list changes, not when an event is coming up. Rather silly.
More screensavers and backgrounds. Whoopie. They already had ways to deliver these to us.

Maybe they'll eventually address all these issues... but I'm not hopeful.

If they really wanted to do this, here's what I would have done instead:

Made the news (not just the newsletter segments) available through an RSS feed. This would let anyone with an RSS reader use the info and display it in whatever format they were familiar with. There are lots of great things you can do with an RSS feed nowadays.
Made the events list an iCalendar data file. Just like the RSS feed, I could import this into any number of applications, display it in my local time zone, have it alert me when I want to be alerted about events, and so forth.
Include screensaver and background updates in the news RSS feed.
Include the "headlines" in the news RSS feed.
Maybe even include a "today's events" article in the RSS feed every morning, for those not using an iCalendar calendar. The "events info" just isn't news.

But all of this requires work. RSS feeds that don't provide constant streams of information just aren't useful. And who would care about that. So the biggest problem is that they'd need to actually keep updating things.

Now, if I was creating a utility to REALLY help me with VMK, here are some things I might add:

Let me view my inventory and save it to a spreadsheet. This couldn't be too difficult - they show the pins you're wearing on the web page if you're logged in.
Let me view every item I have and what room it is in (and save to a spreadsheet)
Let me see what rooms I have (and save them to a spreadsheet)
Let me do some basic room design without having to log in (now you know why I created those room maps)
Alerts when friends log into VMK and I'm not on.
Save my messages from in game to my local disk.
Message my VMK friends even when we're not logged into VMK.

Its a good thing there are places like VMKF that make up for some of the deficiencies in VMK Communicator and VMK itself.

VMK Communicator - too little, too late. Power to the players!

Nope, its hardly new that Ink and I (or in fact, just about anybody and I) disagree.

I'm curious, however - what did you disagree with? I said an awful lot - there was nothing in there thats common ground? With the exception of the bug you outline, VMKC is perfect in your mind?

It's a very simple tool. It doesn't even need to connect to the Internet to update. All it is is a simple Desktop background with the words, "Yavn still hasn't spoken," written on it.

BaldEagleBob
07-18-2007, 06:01 PM
Ah, green hopper gets right to the heart of the matter!

It's just another program you have running in the background on startup that
takes away from your free RAM. And in return it shows you info that you can access with 1 or 2 mouseclicks on the web. This 'extra' sure falls flat.

Prisoner is absolutely correct. What would really be innovative, is if VMK gave us program where we could access our private rooms and inventory when not online. If our character could change clothes and move furniture, things like that. Of course, you couldn't buy or sell or go into 'public areas', but it would still rock! Then the program would sync with VMK when you sign in during regular open hours. It already does this in a limited way when it loads your furniture inventory at the beginning of logging on.

I am not going to use it just because it makes life a bit more difficult when trying to read all of the newslines, like Yavn Speaks and the Yeti article. It won't let me scroll down with the scroll on my mouse, I find that horrible, therefore I won't use it. I would hate to have to keep clicking the scroll bar to go down the page and read it.

I heard i cant download tho

If you have a Mac, you can't download it. But if you're family has a sign in name (click your name and go to your screen) you need to go to whoever set all that stuff up for you. So, it could be your mom or dad, or whoever, really. But you will need a password. (If it says "You must be logged in my an admin before accessing.")

This does look pretty cool, a little pointless.. The perfect tool for when you're bored of VMK, it lets you know when we have updates so you can have a little fun...

Why bother with this thing when you can go and check here and get it just as easily without using your computer's ram? I agree if it had games we could play after hours or something a bit more it might be worth it but for now it's a colourful waste of time and space on my hard drive

VMK doesn't want to encourage fan sites, because they can't control them, and because they allow for an increased possibility of sharing personal information. So, VMK has given us a separate resource. Which we are all free to ignore.

Very good information! This helps out all the players so they know what's going on, when it's going on! It also is good for the leaders too, because now the leaders can also be up to date a lot easier! Just click the logo and presto! Up to date info.! I just finally got a chance to try this thing and it seems to me that they have the times technically listed wrong, at least on my computer.
